Superman Returns director Bryan Singer and lead actor Brandon Routh answered fans' questions at Wondercon in San Francisco last weekend.

No earth-shattering news was spilled but according to Superhero Hype, the following was revealed:

  • - Singer said Superman Returns is larger than both X-Men and X2.

  • - He wished he could have directed both X3 and Superman Returns.

  • - Lex Luthor is "more sadistic" (Singer's exact words) in this movie, having been to prison for years.

  • - Lois Lane having a child and a fiance is the biggest problem (aside from Kryptonite) that they could think of to give Superman.

  • - The reason the "s" is so small on the costume is that they tried a larger S and it made Routh look way too small.

  • - There was never any competition between Singer's X-Men films and Sam Raimi's Spider-Man ones. Singer said he knew Raimi for 20 years and the only competition would be if they opened the same weekend.

  • - Singer said he thinks X-Men 3 will be great, now that he has seen the last trailer.

  • - Singer is working with Usual Suspects screenwriter Chris McQuarrie on a Logan’s Run remake.

Meanwhile, legacy Superman director Richard Donner addressed talk that Superman Returns was meant as a sequel to his Superman and Superman II from the 1970s: "Bryan Singer directed 'X-Men' for my wife [Laura Schuler Donner]," Donner told us, "and Bryan and the two writers, Dan and Mike, during the making of 'X-Men,' were in their trailer every time there was a break, and those guys would sit there and watch 'Superman.' They could remember things that even I couldn't remember! The three of them are great, crazy kids, and I watched them put 'Superman' together, then Bryan called me one day and said, 'They offered me 'Superman' and this is what I wanted all my life.' He's perfect for it, because he's totally emotionally committed to it, as are the two writers. They wanted me to see material, but I don't want to. I want to see the movie. If it is [a sequel to my movies], I'm happy to see these kids get success from it."
