Why the World Needs a Better Superman

Why the World Needs a Better Superman

I am becoming just a little worried about the Superman Reboot. Here are some thoughts.

Editorial Opinion

Not enough lines as Superman. Not enough action. Bad casting choice for Lois Lane. Long and drawn out. Too much story. How’d I do? I know there are several others. Believe me I’ve read all the fan-boy criticisms of Superman Returns. But as a fan of the Superman universe that includes comic books, graphic novels, television series, cartoons, and full-length motion pictures, I have to say I am considerably more concerned with how the reboot is shaping up than I am with the legacy Returns will leave.

Superman Returns caught a lot of flack for not having enough action. In a comic book movie world of X-Men, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Iron Man, Watchmen, and so on, it seems as if fans of the genre are expecting the same from the Superman franchise. But, I would argue that traditionally our savior in the red cape is the least violent of his kind. He has always been portrayed as the big boy scout fighting for truth, justice and the American way. He is conscious of systems of justice and everyone’s right to a fair trial, but more importantly every man’s right to redemption.
We have been told, or perhaps warned, that the newest incarnation of the Kal-El story will be much more action packed; with Superman taking on a darker persona, and really giving it to the bad guys. I am not against more action, but please don’t make him like every other “hero.” I like that he can take a bullet in the eye and smile. I like that he can apprehend Lex Luthor and drop him in the middle of a prison yard rather than kill him. I like that he is slightly more optimistic and brightly colored. After all, this is how he was taught to be. He is meant to set an example for society; not make an example out of society.

“They are a great people, Kal-El, they wish to be. They only need the light to show them the way. For this reason, I send them you: my only son.” -Jor-El.

In a similar vain, it seems as if people are excited about Christopher Nolan mentoring his brother in the production of this film. Let’s be clear: Christopher Nolan is in no way involved with this movie. Besides, Nolan’s muse, Bruce Wayne’s Batman, is a human being with extraordinary means and technology that he uses to wreak havoc on the underworld as retribution for the murder of his parents. Bruce Wayne’s world and his outlook should be painted in a dark way because that’s what his character has experienced. This is not the case with the kid from Smallville.
Kal-El found refuge on planet earth as Clark Kent and had a Midwest, corn-fed upbringing full of love and moral direction. He would have no reason to be dark and brooding; no reason to want to teach everyone a lesson. He simply would want to give back, and moreover, fulfill his destiny as being the savior the world needs and deserves.

“I hear everything. You wrote that the world doesn’t need a savior, but every day I hear people crying for one.” -Superman.

The Superman story is, at its core, a love story. Kal-El relies on and is fueled by the love of his deceased parents, his adoptive parents John and Martha Kent, his love of human-kind, and the love of a girl: Lois Lane. I truly believe that the relationship between Lois and Superman is rival to that of the greatest cinematic love stories of the past. Superman Returns has one of the most romantic scenes in recent history with the meeting on the rooftop and the flight over Metropolis. Expertly written and acted, John Williams’ score sets the tone with Lois Lane’s iconic theme Can You Read My Mind as the back drop.
Brandon Routh was a great Superman and those who say otherwise are simply wrong. Above the city glow with the problems of the world below, Routh’s Superman looks at Lois and says, “I’m sorry I left you Lois. I’ll take you back now.” Back to the roof of the Daily Planet? Back as my girlfriend? It doesn’t matter: it’s heart wrenching nonetheless. If you haven’t seen it lately, watch this scene from Returns and really pay attention. It is simply an example of movie magic and what the Superman love story is all about. Then think about what the reboot may be like if the Man of Steel is darker, meaner, without romance. What will Superman be without love? Is that what we want?

“Faster than a speeding bullet. Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. Look, up in the sky! It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s…..”

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s…..a flight of fantasy. Superman is an alien who was sent to save a planet with his superpowers by his parents moments before they were killed as their planet collided with its sun. Nothing about this should be believable, but somehow it is. My sincere hope is that the new movie does not kill the fantasy: bright colors, giant boots, a cape flapping in the wind, the curl, etcetera. Let us escape. Let us be inspired. I love the Nolan Batman movies, but after I watch them I have to admit I feel a little bit like kicking someone’s rear end. For that franchise to elicit such emotion is a mission accomplished. After I watch a Superman movie, I want to feel like saving the world.

At the risk of this getting much longer I will conclude. I am not going to dig at Zach Snyder, or Henry Cavhill, or Kevin Costner, or Jonah Nolan. Regardless of what hits the big screen, I will pay money to see it, and I’ll probably enjoy it. But I think it’s also time for all Superman fans to get their heads on straight and come to the realization that we are dealing with a better class of superhero. Admit you like the boy scout attitude. Admit you are a sucker for a good love story. Admit that you love the bright, optimistic world that Superman creates. Admit that the world needs a better Superman, and then hope, as I am, that we get the one we deserve.

Good write up dude, I agree.

As long as they have a scene similar to this, I'll be thrilled.

David Goyers the one who wrote the story not J Nolan, and Superman Returns didn't do any of the thing you said it didn't do shit, singer made superman brooding, a stalker that is NOT superman. The only bit that felt like superman and probably the best part of the movie was when he rescued the crashing plane. I don't care about the action even if its toned down if the stories good, and to be honest the story was crap its that simple. Seriously pretty much all of us fan boys are so fickle were ready to make judgement on movie that hasn't even got a proper cast yet.

Well put, I really don't like Superman but I understand that is because he is supposed to be like that. I respect his nature and his purpose. Congrats, great editorial...

Exiles- I appreciate your feedback and I do not disagree with you on some of your points. I hope this did not come across as Return-inflamatory. I really wanted to get the point across that what fans are calling for and what I think Superman should be appear to be two different things. Again, not to praise Returns, but remember, it was supposed to be resetting the franchise. Pretty daunting task no matter how you look at it. Thanks.

My good friend; you know I agree with you 100%. I commend you for not bashing the upcoming film. I do, however, have a feeling this movie will make "Superman Returns" look like a work of gold. People need to give Returns another chance. Watch it with a different mindset and you'll realize this is a movie about Superman's emotions. Every time I watch it, it gets better. But let's not manifest a bad Superman movie by having negativity, so from this moment on, I focus my energy toward this upcoming movie to make it as good as we the fanboys deserve and exceed our high expectations.

Superman78- I am just saying every should be open minded about this movie because we have no clue what the story line is, and I'll admit Returns wasn't as bad as some people make it out to be but it wasn't the superman movie everyone wanted, it should have been the superman movie for a new generation but that didn't happen. By the way I meant no offence with my previous comment.

As much as I want this to be good, EVERYTHING I'm hearing about it is NOT GOOD: rumors of Lohan and Costner to casting SuperHOFF in the lead and difficulty coming up with a good 3rd act - UGH. The likelihood they'll have to CGI muscles on SuperWHIMP has me wondering why not just make it a full-on CGI feature with voiceovers instead?! Synder is gonna have to do some serious convincing to pry the money outta my hands for this one, because it's gotta be more than Superman just hitting shit (otherwise, why not rent A-Team or Expendables)! I'm not convinced by Cavill as Superman (at all) and the origins had better be under 2 mins. or this will be SuperFAIL Returns 2.

Great read my friend. This is exactly the way i feel about where the franchise is going as well. RETURNS served a single purpose as you stated...to reset the franchise. I personally loved RETURNS even with all its odd moments. For me, it gave a better understanding of Supermans emotional turmoils ...(i guess brooding is the word) inside at the consequences that he sees from leaving in the first place. How would anyone of us dealt with that kind of turmoil? Superman is SUPER POWERED but he isnt a robot. Love is what makes him tick and when he returned he got hit by a train per se. II would have loved to have seen what SINGERS next installment looked like. I have a feeling that for those that were left with a bitter taste in their mouths, it would have made been a movie that put everything into retrospect. "OH, NOW IT MAKES SENSE", kinda thing.
I for one love movies that make me think....movies that haves twists and turns and make me wanna guess what happens next...RETURNS did that for me. "A KID? WHAT THE HELL? I GOTTA SEE HOW THIS TURNS OUT"....but now we will never know...kinda sad to think that we will never get to see the result of those things that made the wheels turn inside our heads at those concerns.
@exiles....agreed...i can see where RETURNS wouldnt have been the movie that many wanted to see....but RETURNS was not a movie that was meant to be anything more than it was....it was there to set a different tone to the franchise and i believe that SINGERS sequel to RETURNS surely would have beenthat of the WRATH OF KHAN. ..had we given it a chance....and if we hadnt been such crybabies about RETURNS we certainly would be anticipating SINGERS THIRD installment by now....just like we are anticipating NOLANS THIRD installment of BATMAN. Hopefully one day soon SINGER and ROUTH will get back together (MINDS OUT OF THE GUTTER GUYS) to do what was to follow after RETURNS.

So i take it you want another BORING film for Superman. Well you're not getting your wish- THANK GOD.

Superman is being rebooted for the BETTER.

@naterator- Keep on dreaming. Routh and Singer are DONE. ^_^

Furthermore @Superman78- By you saying- "Brandon Routh was a great Superman and those who don't think so are wrong" that is a very arrogant/prick thing of you to say. Just because some of us don't like Routh doesn't mean we are WRONG. And cue that retard BaneKill coming in here and telling ME what to say and what not to say.

LP4 - 2/23/2011, 1:33 PM
@Wallymandius88- "Watch it with a different mindset and you'll realize this is a movie about Superman's emotions"

FANS DIDN'T WANT ANOTHER FILM ABOUT SUPERMAN'S EMOTIONS. Don't you people get it? Making a nearly 3 hour film all about Superman's emotions isn't the way to reboot the franchise. There needed to be at least a LITTLE BIT of action. The whole time, he threw NOT ONE punch. That is pathetic. In the comics- HE FIGHTS, in the cartoons- HE FIGHTS. He is peaceful I admit...but he aint JESUS CHRIST ok? Superman DOES solve problems sometimes with his FISTS.

I don't want another Superman film all about his [frick]ing EMOTIONS. We deserve better than that I would think. If none of you are happy about the reboot- just don't see it. It's that simple.

and since I know stupid ASS "BaneKill" will come in here and lecture me like a god-damned preacher I will save him the effort- DON'T SEE THE NEW FILM BANEKILL.

LP4 - 2/23/2011, 1:37 PM
@superman78- I don't think you should be excusing Singer by saying it was a "daunting task" to resettle the franchise. If Singer couldn't do it, then he shouldn't have taken the gig. Fact remains- he let down the fans HORRIBLY.

Made Superman into a boring man who does nothing, impregnator of Lois, bastard father, Lex was again- LAME and just everything was so wrong in the film. Nolan rebooted Batman and look at how much better "Batman Begins" was- it had STORY and ACTION. Just what "Superman Returns" lacked- ACTION.

But damn even the story in Superman-Returns was total crap.

Singer blows.

And about what you wrote up top "Not enough action" more like- NO ACTION. That is pathetic.
superman78
superman78 - 2/23/2011, 1:52 PM
LP4- So, how's everything else going? By the way, nothing you said came across as arrogant or pricky. Thanks for commenting anyway.
LP4
LP4 - 2/23/2011, 2:05 PM
@superman78- Love the sarcasm

Fact remains- many directors were able to start cbm franchises from scratch and still did it successfully. Chris Nolan with "Batman Begins" and Jon Favreau with "Iron Man" those are just 2 good examples.

Bryan Singer FAILED with "Superman Returns" it had no action, was emo-hued (the EW magazine talking about Cavill was quoted as calling the film "emo-hued") and the film [frick]ed up Superman- made him a bastard father/impregnator.

Snyder has a lot of work to do cleaning up the mess Singer created.
Wallymandius88
Wallymandius88 - 2/23/2011, 2:33 PM
@LP4 - wow dude, you're as angry as Bobby Knight. Take a chill pill man. And to say Returns had NO action, you must not have been paying attention to the entire movie.

Singer wanted to sort of continue from Superman II, but not at the same time. Therefore it wasn't a reboot and he intended it as a set up movie, with the 2nd one in line to be him fighting Brainiac.

@NotThatGuy - Haha! I love it! No "BORIGINS"!

The only thing of origins I want to see in this one, I want them to go with the story line where Johnathan Kent lives.

@LP4 again - You're a d!ck lol

@WallyMandius88- No need to call me names, I never called YOU anything. For the record I don't care about your excuse that "Superman Returns" was meant as a set up for an action packed sequel. Fact remains- Superman Returns SHOULD HAVE HAD SOME ACTION. "Batman Begins" had action, the first "Iron Man" had action. They were the "starter" films for their franchises, so you can't excuse Singer for not putting action in "Superman Returns" fact remains- IT SHOULD HAVE HAD SOME F/U/C/K/I/N/G ACTION!!!! Nearly 3 hours long and the dude never even threw a single punch!

@sd1971- Love your videos- Loved when they said about Superman Returns "mild yes, but I think a lot of Superman-fans are going to be disappointed" LMAO

But with the Dark Knight they gave it a heated and very positive "THUMBS UP SEE IT IN THE THEATER TWICE"

=D Superman Returns sucked.

@sd1971, "the American Way has been part of the Superman descriptor since at least the 1950's George Reeves TV show. It was only fairly recently dropped in an attempt to de-nationalize Superman.

Returns was a very poor telling of the Superman tale. While it's nice to see the love triangle between Lois Lane and one man sporting two separate identities, people don't go to the movies to see a Superman love story. People who are all butt-hurt about Brandon Routh NOT being cast in the reboot clearly don't understand the concept of a reboot. Like LP4 said, the Welling army seems to have accepted it and moved on while the Routh army is still living in denial.

Yes, we all deserve a better Superman. I'm hoping the new movie will be able to right all the previous wrongs like the Batman reboot did.

@ Superman78 - That was a really good editorial mate, really enjoyable. Well done. A lot of the replies were a good read too.
I enjoyed Superman Returns, and thought it was a balanced film. People say it had NO action; I saw Superman grappling with a jumbo-jet while plummeting through the air; I saw Superman get his arse handed to him on an island of Kryptonite and then get stabbed; I saw him lift a f**king island out the sea and throw it into space!; Not to mention the sequence where he's all over Metropolis trying to stop all the carnage caused from the growing island (blasting falling glass with heat vision was classic). People say Brandon Routh can't act; I thought Superman's reaction to hearing Lois say she didn't love him was believable (made all the more poignant by hearing Jor-El's words echoing in Superman's head); I was on the edge of my seat when he was getting kicked in, actually thinking Superman was going to get killed; as was pointed out, it was a well acted scene where he takes Lois for a flight. The film had a good music score which went with what was happening on the screen. I was looking forward to the sequel immensely as I knew Superman Returns was gonna be the calm before the storm. Singer was quite vocal about making the sequel more action oriented. He would have done this with ease while keeping it on a human level too.
I'm very dubious about the reboot. Sure, it's gonna be action, but is that it? I don't think it's in Zack Snyder's capacity to have emotion in his films, which Superman needs. I've seen Dawn of the Dead, I've seen 300, and I've seen Watchmen (once), but nowhere in those films is there characters I can believe in or relate to. Nor is there any real emotion. And believe it or not anti-emotion people, emotion can have a massively positive effect on a film.
But the fact of the matter is, the reboot IS happening, Brandon Routh won't be playing Superman again, and Superman Returns is never going to get the sequel it was supposed to get. To some this is a blessing, to others, a complete disgrace.

@ YourMomNaked and PatrickBatemen47 - I couldn't agree with you guys more :)
chrisbuckley

Comic writer Geoff Johns said all that needed saying in two bits of dialogue from his recent storylines.

In "Superman and the Legion of Super-Heroes," (http://j.mp/dR3nOs) our hero ends up in a 31st Century where his legacy has been twisted into a virulent anti-alien, pro-human political agenda. There, he corrects a wayward police officer opening fire on civilians saying, "I'm disappointed in you officer. You should know, I'm for everyone."

Later, shortly before his recent death in "Superman: Brainiac" (http://j.mp/fINMXM), Pa Kent encourages Clark in a moment of indecision saying, "Your greatest ability isn't being able to fly, or see through walls, son. It's always knowing what the right thing to DO is."

Those two sentences are the parentheses surrounding the whole equation of this character. If either one is missing, the writing loses focus.

I'm confident with the casting of the new film so far (much more so than for the GL film coming this summer). And I'm also confident in Nolan's ability to tell stories about human beings (more so than I am David Kelley's newly greenlit TV treatment of Wonder Woman).

I don't think that a mandate for a more action-packed film is itself a recipe for disaster, or even a "darker take" on the character," so long as Superman is contained between those two principles: choosing the right thing to do, and working for the good of all. I'm keeping an open mind, and fairly confident that the rest is all hype to appeal to producers backing the film.

@BigChief16- So true my friend :D People are judging the reboot before anything is even done with it. The reason this person made this article that they are worried about the reboot is because they want ROUTH back. This is the 2nd routh-article in the past few days so far and it's a deliberate attempt for people to try and get Routh back into the fold. If routh weren't such a piss-poor actor in all his other roles, I probably wouldn't be so against the idea of him returning but fact is- he has stunk up every role he's been in.

@Knightstalker- True, Snyder has a lot to prove and he has a very mixed record. Let's hope he doesn't botcher this or Superman may be gone for good =( which might not suck...maybe WB can use other characters =D

This is just another attempt at trying to resurrect Routh. I am not going to tell people what they should/shouldn't agree on. But I think we can ALL agree that Routh had his shot as Superman. It's Cavill's turn now...so all the "worrying" this article is talking about seems premature since NOTHING has even been done with it yet. We don't even know the plot for the film =D

Knightstalker
Knightstalker - 2/24/2011, 2:51 PM
@LP4-I'm a little tired of even hearing Routh's name the same as you. Routh is done. The Routh-bots would be very kind to the rest of us by realizing that it's over and just let it go.

@chrisbuckley-That is the best advice anyone could ever give a film maker regarding how to approach Superman. Kudos to you.

Wow, BaneKill77...take a mydol or something. While I agree that LP4 threw the first punch this time, it seems like he knows your modus operandus all too well. He predicted your behavior to a tee.

BTW...Returns was a terrible movie. It spent way too much time looking backward and reminiscing. I suppose that's what a lot of Superman fans want, in order to reclaim the glory days of Donner and Reeve, but they had their day and it's time to move on.

You notice- everytime you start insulting me- YOU'RE the one starting the crap! You respond to my comments on articles but my comments are never directed AT YOU, they are directed at different people, YOU'RE the one always slinging mud my way.

@LordHuck and Knightstalker- Thank you both for trying to appease the situation. BaneKill has been starting fights with me on every single article and truth be told- HE'S always the one slinging mud at me first. If I get into a spat with someone else HE goes in and starts slinging insults my way.

@BaneKill- Let's end the feud shall we? Bury the hatchet so to speak. Those comments I posted up above were because every time I post comments in other articles you are always slinging mud at me- the way i see it if I'm having an issue with SOMEONE ELSE I would appreciate you minding your own business. You have had PMS spats with "KeithM" and "Superguy" before but I never got involved.

All I ask is for the same respect.

Neither one of us are the "CBM Police" but this site IS meant for debating and of course everyone being fans and all we all have differing opinions on things. But if I'm not even addressing YOU banekill I would like you to mind your own business from now on- trying to put it delicately. Usually I only have spats with "Routh-Bots"...I don't like the fact that Cavill JUST GOT ANNOUNCED as Superman and already Routh-Bots are making all these articles. Of course I will voice my opposition to these articles...because that's what this site is ALL ABOUT. We're not all gonna agree on everything all the time "BaneKill" but when you get pissed and start leaving comments directed at me because you don't like the way i talked about routh or you don't like the way i take on routh-bots then that isn't right either. I never personally attacked the routh-bots. I only verbally went on about routh and I attacked yes- their editorials about routh. But that is it. There were times where you took my CBM name and called me "Little Prick 4" which is totally messed up. One time I made mention of my military background and you called me a "military BRAT" you see? You are personally attacking me in a way I never did to anyone on here. I only attacked the Routh-Bots' EDITORIALS but not their personal lives the way you've attacked MINE.

You told me once that your cousin has down-syndrome right? If I played this little feud in YOUR manner I would have made of your down-syndrome cousin. But I haven't and you know why? Because that would be totally [frick]ed up and it's something I won't do. I'm just using that as an example so you can understand the sheer GRAVITY of the way you attack me. Oh and for the record- I have a GIRLFRIEND and she is 'expecting'. So I'm obviously not gay. I said you "fornicate to routh" simply because every time I made fun of routh or said a word that might be considered anti-routh you are always jumping at me on here and insulting me and defending routh with some imaginary warrior sword or something. All the millions of times that has happened you should expect me to make remarks like that. Yes immature in nature I admit but there was reason behind it. If it helps- I'm sorry for saying that.

@LordHuck- btw Thanks for trying to calm the situation but truth be told- I'm not a "kid" LOL. I graduated high school 6 years ago...I have a career...almost paid down my car completely and I live on my own. =P I'm self-sufficient. ^_^
