Nick Cave Doing Rewrites for The Crow

Nick Cave Doing Rewrites for The Crow

An iconic musician rewriting the script to a dead musician? It's not what you think. Plus, the announcement we've been waiting for?

Some time has passed but we've got some surprising developments on how the script is coming along. The last we heard of the impending reboot was that Blade director Stephen Norrington had tunred in a "terrific" script that would take place in either two locations: "the southwest -- the Mexico/Arizona area -- and an urban [setting] -- Detroit or Pittsburgh or something like that." I guess politics are what they are because it looks like Stephen's script is going to get some touch ups by iconic musician and acclaimed screenwriter Nick Cave.

A surprising turn, this might be best for the reboot. He made his screenwriting debut with John Hillcoat's 1988 prison drama Ghosts … of the Civil Dead, but what really has this lifelong "Crow" fan excited is Cave's impressive work on Hillcoat's gritty Australian Western "The Proposition," which was awesome.

While Cave's record label may not like to publicize his other career as a successful screenwriter, there's no doubt that he is in major demand, especially after having been named one of Variety's 10 Screenwriters to Watch in 2006.

But besides this news, TheWrap also let out that there could be an announcement in the coming weeks as to who will take flight in the coveted role of Eric Draven, the role made famous by actor/martial artist Brandon Lee before his untimely passing during filming. This new "Eric" has been described as a being a "full-fledged character than in Alex Proyas' 1994 original."

I don't know about you all but I'm starting to get more into this reboot with what I'm hearing about his guy; even though I have never heard of him before. As Eric being "different," so long as whomever is playing him doesn't try to copy what Brandon's performance was I think we will all be saved from a full-on redo. With that said, the original film didn't stay all that true to the graphic novel. Things were changed for the film, but that's another story. I'm excited to hear that they've finally started casting. Stay tuned for more possible developments.

Brandon Lee
Vincent Perez
Mark Dacascos
Eric Mabius
Edward Furlong

Save for Dacascos, the portrayals just kept getting worse and worse.

I cannot think of one good reason to remake The Crow. Not one. The original was fantastic and timeless.

They could get frickin' Steven Spielberg and the ghost of Stanley Kubrick to direct and Orson Welles, the Coen brothers, Joss Whedon, and Maya Angelou to be on the writing committee and it STILL would not have been worth the trouble!

The original was great. Leave it alone. A reboot would do nothing more than diminish the quality of the first.

He should just add musical touches tho, and not change anything drasticly if it is "terrific."

and either Jared Leto or Joseph Gordan Levitt for Eric Draven.

If they're gonna do this - reboot. Because I know that for a while they were talking about this being another continuation.

The Crow franchise is very special to me. And to everyone that's suggested Levitt for the role - I couldn't agree with you more. He would be PERFECT.

I was Draven once for a Halloween party :D

@Arrion: I seriously wished the would have kept him in the film. I loved the aspect of him as Draven's guardian in the comics - and that was missing in the movie... I really really hope they do that this time :)

I would join the chorus of people saying leave it alone if not for Nick Cave's involvement. The Proposition was frickin' awesome, easily the best western of the past several years (better than 3:10 or Appaloosa). Get Hillcoat to direct it and I'm there.

@LEEE: Thank you, bro :D

Someone fill me in then - I keep hearing conflicting reports... Last I remember, it was gonna be another (bound to be aweful) sequel with the badguy from Hellboy II playing the title role. Then I hear reboot. Then reboot with different name and make-up. At any rate - here is my full opinion:

I saw the original film at a drive in movie theatre with my dad when I was a kid - he was the biggest Crow fan, a huge Bruce/Brandon Lee fan, and he got me switched on to the comics. The Crow is one of my absolute favorite fictional franchises, not even just for nostalgic reasons - and I really don't want them to screw this up.

I'd really like to see a more faithful adaptaion to O'Barr's original comic if they HAVE to do this. The first film was a masterpiece - and it retained the basic core of the story. If they were to do a more direct adaptation - it wouldn't come off as a remake at all: simply call him 'Eric' like in the comic - 'Draven' was a product of the movie. Like the comic, have Shelly killed by a drunk-driver, etc. And by simply modernizing it, it would further separate the two films.

These are my thoughts for if they're gonna do this, since it looks like they really are. Ultimately - I feel like the whole thing is unecessary though. They got it right the first time, and I guess I always thought that if it's not broke don't fix it...

What an absolute waste, and what a statement of Hollywood, re-booting a classic that should remain untouched.
Nut up and do something original !
Go grab one of the countless B or C superhero's and develop a story around it.

What a Travesty!

Leave the original Crow the Frakk alone!
Is O'Barr involved in this?
I wouldn't think he would sign off
on this!

I don't care if you get Nolan
to direct this! It's sacrilege!

BRANDON LEE WAS THE CROW IN FILMS LIKE HEATH LEDGER WAS THE JOKER IN DARKNIGHT...HAS ENOUGH TIME PASSED? THERE ARE PEOPLE THAT WOULD RATHER LEAVE IT ALONE, AND THERE ARE SOME PEOPLE THAT LOVE THE STORY ITSELF AND WANNA SEE IT AGAIN ON SCREEN. IF YOU CAN DO IT IN A DIFFERENT VIEN WHEREAS YOUR NOT REALLY TRYING TO TOP WHAT A GREAT ACTOR WHO MADE THE CROW ROLE ICONIC, THEN SO BE IT. BUT IF YOUR GOING TO SIMPLY DO IT TO MAKE A BUCK AND FOLLOW THE BEATS ALL OVER AGAIN THAT WERE ALREADY DONE, THATS WRONG, AND FANS WILL BE PISSED.

LOOK AT THE JOKER, NICHOLSON DID A WELL ENOUGH JOB SOME MIGHT SAY NOBODY SHOULD TOUCH IT, WHY DO IT AGAIN..THEN NOLAN SHOCKS US FROM LEFT FIELD,,"THE GAY COWBOY FROM BROKE-BACK MOUNTAIN PLAYING THE JOKER? WTF THE GUY IS NUTS THIS WILL NEVER WORK"..AND LOW AND BEHOLD IT WAS THE BEST PORTRAYAL TO DATE, LEAVING NICHOLSON'S PORTRAYAL ALONE AND BECOMING ITS OWN SEPARATE BEAST ALTOGETHER. IF YOU CAN DO THE CROW, DO IT.... JUST DONT TRY TO STEAL BRANDON LEE'S THUNDER BECAUSE IT REALLY WONT WORK UNLESS YOU DO IT "DIFFERENT".

Man Heath Ledger would have been a perfect Crow but like Brandon Lee he left us way to erly R.I.P. Heath and Brandon. I think Jared Leto would be an awesome Crow or Cillian Murphy would be amazing as well.

When I heard this was getting remade, I, like SO many others, was a bit leery about it. I HEARD that Norrington's take on this was more of a documentary type style, almost like it had been filmed with a handheld camcorder. Which, to me, sounded interesting and I began to try to have a little faith in it. The original is one of my all time favs and I have watched it countless times. And, in my opinion, still holds up quite well today, especially the soundtrack. I read the comic years ago and was aware that it didn't quite follow the comic, but still, retained the heart of the comic. I'm interested in seeing another take on this because the sequels (City of Angels wasn't TOO bad)sucked! Especially Wicked Prayer (which was a great novel by the way)

Im curious, why reboot this when the original was already good?

To me its one of the few films that really cant have a reboot. Im with you Gunsmith, Brandon Lee was The Crow, punto e basta.

I dunno, I dont see anything positive coming from this.
