THE CROW: Ernie Hudson Explains Why He Has "No Desire" To Watch Upcoming Reboot

Ernie Hudson, who played a key supporting role in the original '90s adaptation of The Crow, has revealed that he has "no desire" to watch the upcoming reboot...

The original 1994 adaptation of The Crow still has a huge, loyal following, so there was already a certain amount of scepticism surrounding Lionsgate's decision to develop a reboot. When the first trailer was released, that apprehension turned to outright disgust for a lot of fans.

Are people being a little quick to judge based off a single teaser? Perhaps, but for many, Brandon Lee will always be the only Eric Draven, and that's all there is to it.

Total Film interviewed Ghostbusters star Ernie Hudson, who played heroic cop Sergeant Daryl Albrecht in The Crow, for the Goth classic's 30th anniversary, and the actor admitted that he's only recently been able to revisit the film due to the tragic accident that ended Lee's life during filming.

"Well, it's very hard for me. I love The Crow and I'm so thankful to have been a part of it – and I say that now after all these years. Up until now it's been very, very difficult."

Hudson was then asked about the new movie, and, like many others, he wondered why they didn't simply go with a different character.

"For me Brandon was The Crow. I love James O'Barr [creator of the character] he’s a good friend, and I’m happy to see that franchise move forward, but Eric Draven – that's Brandon, and I think they are trying to base it on that character."

"But it’s The Crow and it can be other stories," he went on. "Brandon, he was Eric, and that version is his. So it’s hard for me to think of anyone else playing that role – just thinking about it even, it’s a done deal. But I’m happy for them, this is an industry, there’s a fan-base, but make it something else. No one approached me or had a discussion with me about the new one, and I wish them well. But I have no desire to check that out, it’s too much emotion to add to it."

The synopsis reads: "Soulmates Eric Draven (Bill Skarsgård) and Shelly Webster (FKA twigs) are brutally murdered when the demons of her dark past catch up with them. Given the chance to save his true love by sacrificing himself, Eric sets out to seek merciless revenge on their killers, traversing the worlds of the living and the dead to put the wrong things right."

The movie will also star Danny Huston, Laura Birn, Sami Bouajila, and Jordan Bolger in undisclosed roles. Zach Baylin and Will Schneider penned the script.

The new take on The Crow was recently pushed back from June 7 to August 23, 2024.

Man this just looks bad all the way around. I even really like the lead guy as an actor. But boy does he look stupid.

A big piece of me thinks it's dang near disrespectful to do this remake considering Lee lost his life during the filming of the original.

No respect or honor in Hollywood. Ever.

@lazlodaytona - I'd be fine if it was more a straight adaptation of the graphic novel but they just couldn't resist milking the original film

That’s fair i think…

Even as someone who doesn’t think the movie looks all that bad , I still think they should have gone with a new character especially since there is precedence for it in the mythos and using Eric Draven as the lead just is still too sensitive of a matter given how synonymous Brandon Lee is with that character.

However , the movie is still based on the comics and ultimately I feel no actor should be bigger then the character they are playing so I understand the filmmakers using the likes of Eric & Shelley again but in this new version of the story (especially the former since he’s the OG).

I definitely understand both sides but personally , I’ll give it a shot (even if it may not be in theaters).

@TheVisionary25 - yeah, but they're still seemingly using the first film as their basis in many regards (the last name of Draven, presumably the role/significance of Top Dollar)

@Slotherin - there’s no Top Dollar or anything apparently

The only thing they are apparently using are the names Eric Draven and Shelley

@TheVisionary25 - oh, I thought that's who Danny Huston is playing.

@TheVisionary25 - just went back to see the cast and he wasn't listed as such so I'll stand corrected.
Thanks for pointing that out. You're one of the good ones so my ego can bear this 😜

The Crow is such a weird property. The first movie is so loosely based on the original story that it's basically it's own story, then the second movie came and that's super loosely connected to the first movie, then the following two or three flicks (and subsequent books) are even more loosely connected via basic mythos that they could also be entirely their own properties. And that's not including that weird Highlander TV ripoff that tried to continue the first movie's story ... or the quality of all those sequels. Just an overall weird property that, much like the title character seems to survive no matter what happens to it.

Which I guess makes sense considering the original book couldn't possibly be made into a movie since like a majority of the story is just splash pages with emo poetry captions with very little in the way of story and the simplest of plots and in comic book form works lovely but would be pretty goddamn boring as a movie or show.

I'm just kind of rambling here; Not really sure where I am as far as the new movie's take. On one hand the action seems too ... actiony for the original story, if that makes sense. On the other at least there doesn't seem to be any sign of necrophilia like in the original story, so there's that.

@Reeds2Much - The tv show on USA in the late 90's was so shit.
This pic pretty much sums it up.

The original movie with Lee is an entertaining product of it's time with a great rock soundtrack, but everything after that was dreadful.
I watch the original around Halloween almost every year.

This new movie looks like total ass and I have no interest in seeing it.

@Reeds2Much - With your extensive knowledge of the crow as an IP I think you should watch this remake and let us know if it’s any good. I’ve haven’t even watched the original crow and i had no idea about the additional spin-off and sequels until you clarified them. Interesting franchise for sure.

Such a tragedy what happened to Brandon on the original set, but was the film really that good? I've always thought of it as a fairly watchable B movie.

@Izaizaiza - it's okay. It definitely is propped up a bit by the background of the movie and real life death, but it's not remotely bad and has a lot of charm

@Slotherin - It certainly has its charm, and is definitely watchable. I just don't see it as untouchable. I'd love to see A good remake

@Izaizaiza - it's definitely not untouchable.
I'd rather see an honest attempt to adapt the comic itself though than see it remade.

As much as I love the first movie, I feel it's a product of it's time. I feel it worked with the backdrop of a very gritty and dark movie for the early 90's, like many films that had that "grit"

Now I don't think The Crow works, at least in the remake's light. There's just something about the original that would be difficult to make as successful as it was back then for today.

They should really ugly sonic this and ADR the names to something else.

It shouldn't be Eric Draven.

I think he would have felt conflicted in any scenario tbh. And it's understandable.
