Why Thor Will be the Worst Comic Book Movie of All Time and How Its Failure Will Impact the Avengers Movie!

Why Thor Will be the Worst Comic Book Movie of All Time and How Its Failure Will Impact the Avengers Movie!

Basically throughout the Internet, I've seen nothing but huge amounts of hype for this film. I don't see how this could be good based on all the concept art, stills, and the Comic-Con trailer. Why anyone would be excited for this cheesy B-movie adaptation of a great fantasy comic book is beyond me.

*Disclaimer* - Hello, my fellow geeks here on CBM! I'm new here. This is my first article. Although the subject material may be extremely controversial, I'm just trying to make a point about this movie. I don't want you to make judgments on me because of this one article. And yeah this is kind of a rebuttal to JoshW's "Why 'X-Men: First Class' Will Probably Be The Worst CBM Ever!"

So "The Avengers" is finally happening, if Thor and Captain America don't bomb at the box office. Well the point I'm trying to make is that Marvel is on such a pillar of greatness that it may only take one [crappy] film to bring this whole project crashing down...

...Which brings me to Thor.

Now, back when "Iron Man 2" came out, I heard about the after credit scene and that Thor might appear. I was so excited that I forced my friends to sit through the credits and then we saw it...

And we were all excited. I bought Matt Fraction's "Ages of Thunder" and I thought that was the movie that Kenneth Branagh had set out to make. Then they released the concept art, which made me less excited. Then it was reported that the Asgardians won't be gods, but beings from another dimension. From there my anticipation dropped completely. But it didn't turn into pure hatred until the very first still image with Thor, Odin, and Loki.

Which leads me to this blog post, and here's why I think Thor will suck more than all of the worst comic book movies (Wolverine, Hulk, Superman 4, Batman and Robin, etc.) put together!

1. Chris Hemsworth is Not a Good Actor.

Now I'll admit he was good in "Star Trek," but what has he done that made everyone else so convinced that he's the perfect Thor? Is it his work in "Ca$h?" "A Perfect Getaway?" "Home and Away?!" No, he has a hard time selling everyone on why he makes a decent Thor.

Which leads me to the clips of him in the Comic-Con trailer. His accent is just his normal Australian, and his line delivery makes him sound like some pompous child. The line that really just this stand out so clearly is when he and Odin were arguing and he screamed, "Well, you're an old man and a fool!" To me it sounded like a first grader trying to insult another kid. It was embarrassing.

But at least he isn't as bad as his little brother Liam (star of Miley Cyrus' "The Last Song," which sucks).

2. Kenneth Branagh's Vision for Thor.

While he may not be a very successful director, I generally like most of Kenneth Branagh's films. His undertaking this sounds to me like Ang Lee taking on Hulk or Gavin Hood attaching himself to Wolverine. An art film director with no experience making a big budget Hollywood movie, gets bullied by a big studio because the director doesn't know how to finagle his way around what the studio wants and thinks is right. Which is a shame, because Kenneth Branagh would've made a great Shakespearian and epic fantasy style Thor movie.

3. The Costumes (And Asgard in General) Look like SHIT!

What does this remind you of? Well does it remind you of this:

No? How about this:

Well heres what it reminds me of:

Yeah that's right, I went there. These costumes look so bad I thought they were sold at K-Mart. And the worst part about it is that it could've been more like this:

But instead, this happened:

And another thing, the hammer looks too puny:

It should be a bigger. It's Mjonlir, not a kid's toy.

4. Flash Gordon and the Masters of the Cheesiness.

Now back to this image:

Is it just me or does it look like Anthony Hopkins just saw Natalie Portman and Kat Dennings naked in the shower together?

Well it looks like no one will be taking this seriously. Oh great, now I can write this off even more. I don't have a lot to say on this, because it looks too Logan's Run futuristic and should be more like a used and beaten up world like Star Wars or Lord of the Rings.

5. Asgard Scenes are Sidelined for Earth Scenes.

Back to the Comic-Con trailer, whenever they showed Lady Sif, The Warriors Three, and Heimdall, they used nothing but quick cuts of scenes featuring them, which usually means they will barely show up in the film. Where have I seen this before? "Transformers 2." They advertised the cool robots in every trailer and TV spot. And who were the most prominent in the film? The new Jar-Jars, and the John Turturro idiots. If you look at it, they don't even speak in the trailer, which means they will have about two scenes (one in the beginning and one at the end).

6. Boring Action Scenes.

Along with the all the bad stuff I have said, what makes Thor look like such utter [trash] is the action scenes look so bland. Sure the Asgardian stuff looks a little cool but as previously mentioned, it doesn't really seem like there will be a lot. But what's the necessity for the double foot kick? Why does Thor need to do wrestler moves on S.H.I.E.L.D. agents?!? Is it because it's essential to the story? Or is it because they need to fill time with some [garbage].

7. No Donald Blake.

Although he seems like a worthless character, Donald Blake is essential to telling the story of Thor. By inhabiting Blake's body, Thor learns humility and the value of humble perseverance in dealing with his injured leg, and how he came to care for the sick and dying, first as a medical student, and later as a successful physician. But without Blake, it just sounds like Thor's learning humility will be lost in the "spectacle" and be given up for some Avengers whoring.

8. Space Pirates?!

So back to the extra terrestrial aspects of Thor, all I have to say is why? Thor is epic fantasy, not science fiction. It should be more like Lord of the Rings, and not like Flash Gordon! It just looks silly in the live action context, which is why out of all the characters to base off the Ultimate Universe version, Thor is one that should be avoided AT ALL COSTS!!!!

9. Thor (the Norse God) + Public Domain Laws = No Toys to Sell as Merchandising.

For those who don't know what public domain is, it's basically when the property rights of a cultural icon expire, everyone has the right to use said property without infringing on a copyright law. In turn, everyone is denied the ability to use said property for profit (unless it is a different version of the original property). Now Thor the Norse God may be under public domain, the Marvel version is not. And making it devoid of any qualities of the Asgardians' being gods simply because Marvel is afraid of copyright infringement is a very dumb idea,. Especially since Marvel's version of Thor is distinctly different from the Norse god in appearance alone, which is why all these problems pop up. You can have Thor be a Nordic God like he was in "Tales of Asgard," The only reason they made this mutilated version is so that Marvel can make merchandise for the film.

10. Four Words: Post Production 3D Conversion.

The new death mark of Hollywood has been stamped on this movie. Ever since the release of "Clash of the Titans" earlier this year, more and more films have been getting the post-production 3D conversion. What Hollywood doesn't realize is that unless you film a movie with a 3D camera, then the 3D will not work at all. When this was announced, Joe Johnston was very skeptical, and I applaud him for that. "I think [3-D] tends to be overused and can be a little bit gimmicky. A lot of people are using 3-D now because they feel have they have to ... that will come and go and the pictures that deserve to be in 3-D will continue to be. When it's done bad, it can make you carsick."

But Kenneth Branagh welcomed the idea with open arms: "We came to feel that in our case 3-D could be the very good friend of story and character for a different kind of experience.

"It's another draft of the story that can reveal itself in a different way," he said. "I had a healthy degree of skepticism up front ... I've become somebody extremely excited about working with possibilities of doing it this way.

"A pretty careful conversation is what we've been having for quite some time about what we know has to be the most sensible decision: Is it led by story? Can this offer a different type of experience and exploit what we have in the story? It absolutely can ... we travel very long distances in the movie and the opportunity to export and exploit the journey of the hero is really offered up as a great potential enhancement here."

Post production 3D is a very new technology and is a very new innovation. It will take around 20 years for it to be as good as filming in 3D. But as of right now, it's just a quick and easy way to make more money, and people are starting to catch on very quickly.

So how will this affect The Avengers? If it bombs, Marvel will stop coasting on their gravy train of success and realize that if they want to make huge amounts of money (i.e. the Avatar amounts of money that they are hoping to get) then Thor (or Captain America, but not both) bombing will make them realize that the next movie has to be way better because the people demand quality, not a shitty movie!

You've made some good points but I think you are being too pessimistic.

I believe that Thor and Captain America will both do very well and that there is great interest out there far beyond the traditional comic fan base.

As an Australian science fiction writer I've been writing Thor fan fiction on a variety of sites for some years and I've noticed quite an upsurge in interest in my fan fic since the Thor movie was announced.

Why not check out some of my Marvel (mainly Thor) fan fiction. Just scroll down below my author profile and you will see over 40 fan fiction stories here:

are you crazy,man.

thor is gonna be the comic book movie of next year.

the stuff we've seen in the trailer so far,is very good.

out of all the marvel movies so far on paper thor would of been the hardest to put over with the genral public.

you can sell iron man, hulk & captain america quite easily.

but thor is a tough challenge,i think marvel studios & comic fans are quite pleased of what we've seen so far.

marvel studios is the future, they're gonna show other film studios mainly fox & sony this is how you do it.

I am sure some people will not like it but i wont be one of them . What is with people asking why is thor fighting shield agents , wrestling moves well thor is a master of all types of combat armed or unarmed wrestling included . And no donald blake is ok with me i want to see thor not donald blake , thor can learn humility just fine on his own since he has been made a mortal .

I do not agree with what you said. However, it is somewhat pointless to discuss this now, until someone actually sees the finished film. I've seen great trailers turn out bad movies and I've seen so-so trailers that have been for some good ones.

i agree this all of your points, specialy with the cleanyness the film looks,i love superheros cos they are on earth and ther are normal people with powers we can relate to...this film is about gods, ive nvr liked thor tbh hes not my cup of tea just because they live in the air in sum kingdom :S and what can a hammer do? can he even fly? i think it will be like HULK cos ov the trailer he doesnt have powers until he gets the hammer which we cud b sat ther for a long time waiting for...and ther costumes suck ass

I've been fearing everything you said since i saw the trailer. i too wanted "ages of thunder" mixed in with a little modern day earth scene with Jane foster and so on...

see everyone is upset that WB haven't fast tracked their JLA movie like Marvel has done with Avengers. but the reason RomatEr is disappointed is because marvel sacrificed things that would have made Thor much cooler in order to fit him into Iron Man - or what the general movie going audience will accept as being a part of tony starks world. the general populace is dumb with no imagination. if you put a god in starks movie people will whine about it. don't ask me why, i wouldn't.

every decision they've made is justifiable. the reason they wear what they wear? because they are all knowing all seeing super beings who can pretty much make and do whatever they want. So they're not going to wear tattered, dirty battle armor a la LOTR. i wish they would, but i'll accept that they are not. they've said this is more of a kirby/simonson based universe so im not to upset with the costumes.

Them being "super beings" not Gods? im cool with that too. it leaves room for more cosmic stuff. you gotta keep in mind most people actually do believe in a god and that he is the only one true god and to mix that with aliens and other gods people will, again, whine "that doesn't make any sense!!!" - stupid still but i get why marvel is doing what they're doing...

Can't speak on Chris Hemsworth but yeah not looking so good in the preview. even agent coulson's voice over?? why are you using that to introduce a trailer?? he's boring and unenthusiastic. and hey i like the character! that's who he is. but you're trying to set this guy up as a bad ass and clark gregg isn't exactly bringing it.

I don't need Blake - too similar to Banner/Hulk

So i understand why they made all of the decisions but i think when you combine all of them it won't make for a very focused movie. to much Avengers set up...

I also think marvel, as a studio, are blowing their load way to fast with all of these. their first movie was in 08, and by 2012 they'll have avengers out? and we've already seen hints at the cosmic U? i don't think the general audience is willing to go on this ride like Marvel think they are. We were all happy Marvel was going to start to make their own movies, but it's a bunch of comic nerds who are in charge who've never had to deal with being a movie studio. i can't see Marvel making movies past 2020. and WB has been around since the beginning and will continue to be. hell they've been making superman media since 1940. we will get an awesome JLA movie down the line and it be great. I do not think Avengers will be the big event we all think it's going to be. it'll make a profit - but my prediction is it's not going to blow the roof off of the box office.

ckal@ hey if you could buy tickets today i would already have one! im going to enjoy this movie cause im a fanboy. but i also want it to be successful and i want the world too see what's so cool about these characters and why we like them so much and i dunno if that will happen... but i'll cross my fingers.

If Thor refers to himself as the god of thunder - i'll lose it! and i also want a scene where he raises his hammer above his head and the biggest lightning strike comes down and makes the loudest thunder clap ever put on screen! seriously - Thor better bring the storms...

if the thunder rolls early and often then i'll let go of everything i dislike about the look/the feel ect.. which, as i said, is minimal.

Jesus H! What is this site all about? I see more smearing on here than thanks for all the work these people and actors put in these movies to entertain us.Theres reason why you dont like the movie, and there's reasons why they change some things. THEY ARE REAL PEOPLE PLAYING THESE CHARACTERS! THIS IS NOT A CARTOON OR A COMIC BOOK! EVERYTIME SOMEONE GETS PUNCHED THE SCREEN WILL NOT SAY : POW BOOM CRUNCH. They are making the movies for people who grew up watching and reading these comics. Lets face it not many kids actually read the comics anymore, and the kids who watch the cartoons dont really pay attention it's all about drowning in the pretty colors and not blinking. I will admit they have ruined some of the movies with the storylines, but if they had put the story line on the big screen it would look more retarded than dead pools character in origins. Look Thor is going to be a great movie, I think the armor is great, and they arent in another dimension they are gods in asgard. Just like to comics, this movie for me is just a stepping stone to the avengers,(which will be the best cbm of all time) and ironman 3. And why hadnt anyone said anything about Chris Evans Play two [frick]in super heros? the human torch wasnt enough? Good thing they are gonna reboot F4. Look everyone needs to relax This thor movie is gonna be great, I'd sit through drivle just to see the first avenger easter egg. Thankfully I have faith in the cbm's, xmen not so much. If they were gonna do any more x-men movies it should of been age of apocolypse, after xavier dies magneto takes over the xmen, wolverine and jean grey get together, scott and alec summer turn bad along with angel, gambit and jubilee start a group. the world turns upside down when he dies.

@werty Can you explain why?

@ckal Look, I am very doubtful that this will be any good is all. And about Thor's Walt Simonson heydays, sure they were wacky, but they were still felt a little viking like. But this film looks like a remake of Flash Gordon or He-Man, and Thor shouldn't look like that.

I actually signed up for the sole reason of writing this comment. Never before have I seen so many scattered opinions portrayed as facts in any article...anywhere...ever. Well, that's a lie, but still. I will give you credit for writing the article though, and it's pretty obvious you have a pretty strong passion for Thor, so I hope it isn't as bad as you think it's going to be.

Two thoughts before I go. I do agree that post-conversion 3D is a mistake for both this and CA:TFA, but that's just Feige hopping on the 3D bandwagon hard. Second, You gotta be excited about the addition of The Destroyer though, he looked pretty legit.

@Hamm3rtym3 (relating to the first comment)

Honestly, Kevin Feige (like Avi Arad, Joe Quesada, Jeph Loeb, and Rob Liefeld) is not to be trusted. Firing Ed Norton from the Avengers is like when Joe Quesada ruined everything Spider Man with Brand New Day. And he's going to derail it by putting out so many films that after a while, everyone will just get sick of it all.
Reasonnnn
Reasonnnn - 8/23/2010, 2:18 PM
You actually think this is going to be worse than Catwoman, BATMAN and ROBIN, F4 movies, etc? like really?

The cast, especially Tom Hiddleston have done their homework and research and really know their stuff. There's an actual plausible story line that makes sense. The plot is pretty standard too, as we've seen this is plenty of movies (recently the Star Trek reboot).

And I'm pretty sure they're being careful with the Post-Production 3D conversion. I think there was an article on here on MARVEL's thoughts about post-conversion and not trying to make it ridiculous like Clash of the Titans.

Although I don't agree with some of Marvel's decisions, I know they'll produce a quality movie.

@Reasonnnn I think it will be a new level of bad. Really it just looks that bad, but there's a slight chance that it won't be as bad as the worst of the superhero movies IMHO.

Hey Hammer Heads, First time post. Found this site looking for Thor movie stuff. Been lurking for a bit.... I liked this review. Great comments so far.

I am an UBER Thor fan. Only comic I get into. I have a full run. Yes a completly full run from 1964 to present 612. I have a Storm Breaker and a replica hammer (i cant spell mijoner...). I am a hammer head.

Most of the fanboys I know for Spidey, Xmen, Iron Man have been OK with their screen counterparts, for the most part. I am wondring how I will react to the new telling for my comic hero Thor. I am very afraid so far.

I am not impressed with what I have seen yet. I cant stand the armor. It all too 'linear' and alike. Some of the best stuff in the comics was the armor, especially Odins.

Asgard looks like the armor. There is little pizzaz. Everything is gold and black. Blagh.

Chris's acting sounds really bad. So does the script.

The Destroyer looked great.

I am afraid this is going to be like a Daredevil or Ghost Rider. I liked them enough but they were cheap/weak adaptations. I think Thow is going to get the same treatment and money was pumped into CA over Thor. Even if they are trying to sell it with some big names.

Dude, there WILL be Thor toys, the SDCC even had some toy Thor hammers they are going to sell in the future, as well as plenty of action figure that all looked VERY cool. Dude, do research before you say stuff like there will be no toys.

Ohh easy guys. I think it was just a fun review tapping into some inital thoughts. I know I resonated with them somewhat. It was harsh, but I took it as a 'preview roast'.

But yeah, I dont know the script. It just 'sounded' weak. "uggg Im on Earth arent I?" That is not the Thor I EVER knew.... His love for earth vs Asgard was a big deal in the comics. I am not making any judgements at this time. I am just afraid that my comic is not going to turn out good on film.

I have no problem 'reinventing' the character some. I hope that it still contains some of the Marvel 'essence' of the origional. Thor has had many earthly guises. A new one wont bother me at all, as long as he maintains the affection he always carried for the 'mudball'.

I am hoping like Hel it will turn out good. I do have hope even if my inital 'look' scared me too.

It makes you seem a little too emotionally involved in your opinions, so you just exploded all over a movie that will most likely do its job, to lead up to the avengers, well. (note: before anyone reads this post, if they care, just know i love Marvel and will be there opening weekend for all of these movies. i can't wait and i believe they are going to be good! i just know we are a small part of the audience.)

RomatEr@ yeah, i hope you're wrong, yeah i disagree with some of your points. but i don't get how anyone can't see where you're coming from with all of this. i mean, even the guy with the entire Thor run is skeptical. Dissing a movie before it comes out is the same as defending it. it's an editorial, wgaf.

I think Marvel is medling to much with these movies and they should just let the directors do their thing. i think avengers is being rushed. just look at the casting of mark ruaffalo, do you think it would have happened that fast if they didn't want the big photo op for comic-con? i think it's being rushed so much so that they pretty much won't have any more movies to make by 2020, and i bet you that's why they sold out to disney. to have a WB/DC type of relationship. WB has been doing mostly the right thing with all of their comic properties for decades (notice i said "mostly";) im looking at you Joel Schumacher).

And that's not just based on a thor trailer. Thor looks alright, but it's not the kind of trailer im rushing out to show my non-comic-fan friends, ya know? im basing it off of them letting Norton go, getting young actors who can be squeezed for more movies as often as possible, "restucturing" Sam Jackson's contract and not honoring Terrance Howard's. c'mon Marvel, you're better than that arent you?

This point was brought up to me when i tried to tell someone a long time ago that Marvel making all of these movies was better because they would care for their characters more than a studio, and the point was: "Marvel did the clone saga, Onslaught, Maximum Carnage, and OND/BND - and they still think that was a good idea..."

Public domain means anyone can use the characters. It is why Thor God of thunder can appear on Xena ,and be in Sci Fi Channel movies and Even the history channel can feature him in Clash of the God's.and He can be in films Like Erik the Viking and Thor at a Bus stop. And Marvel cannot sue those companies unless they infringe on Marvel stories or their Thor's likeness. And Marvel can make any type of Thor figure they want! Who would be able to sue them? Vikings? So your whole point of them making Thor not be a god for this reason is a stupid idea... Yours! Nowhere has Marvel Studio's or anyone else said this.

And he obviously does not have the power of Thor at that point in the film that he drop kicks a shield agent. (And that looks badass btw) If you don't like that stop watching comic movies.Comic's ain't the Bible and comic Movies ain't gonna be Gone with the Wind.

(I should be writing articles on here! At least I would write them based on reality and from the perspective of a fan. Not made up tripe that has no basis in fact)
O.K. Just one more things to say (I could go on and on.) After the two days that this article has been up you got 3 thumbs up. Don't you have anyone who could get on here and vote for ya except you and your parents.
Damn sad......

You are welcome to your opinion....but why don't you hold off your analysis until you've actually watched the film. Overall your points are rather weak. And your version of Thor looks pretty gay...looks as bad as the Thor did in the Hulk TV show. One last thing...There will Never Be-I repeat- Never Be a comic book movie as bad as Batman and Robin (It is bar none the biggest smoldering pile of feces ever produced in the history of cinema, much less comic book movies.) I would rather watch the latest chick flick with Julia Roberts than be forced to sit through that again. As far as the Chris Hemsworth not being a good actor. You just said yourself he was good in Star Trek- his last project, so he must have some ability. You might be one of those that wanted Triple H to play the part and your just pissed about it. I'm sure there were those who said the same thing about Christopher Reeve before they watched the first Superman movie back in 1978, but we all know how good he was. I really don't think this will be any less cheesy than anyone of the last Star Wars movies, and they were big money makers. This may not be "Iron Man", but I just don't see this one flopping. I thought the trailer looked pretty damn cool in it's unfinished state....remember there is still eight months of post production left to make this movie and all it's details look great.
