Michael Bay Responds To Hugo Weaving's TRANSFORMERS Diss

Director Michael Bay addresses Hugo Weaving's disparaging remarks regarding his voiceover work as Megatron in Bay's Tranformers films. Weaving previously stated that it was 'meaningless work.' Read on for Bay's response.

A few days ago Hugo Weaving had to say this about the TF movies he did:

"That’s a weird job for me because it honestly was a two-hour voice job, initially. I was doing a play and I actually didn’t have time, anyway. It was one of the only things I’ve ever done where I had no knowledge of it, I didn’t care about it, I didn’t think about it. They wanted me to do it. In one way, I regret that bit. I don’t regret doing it, but I very rarely do something if it’s meaningless. It was meaningless to me, honestly. I don’t mean that in any nasty way. I did it. It was a two-hour voice job, while I was doing other things."

Today Michael Bay responded. Of course names are not mentioned but you can make the conclusions yourself:

"Do you ever get sick of actors that make $15 million a picture, or even $200,000 for voiceover work that took a brisk one hour and 43 minutes to complete, and then complain about their jobs? With all the problems facing our world today, do these grumbling thespians really think people reading the news actually care about trivial complaints that their job wasn’t “artistic enough” or “fulfilling enough”? I guess The Hollywood Reporter thinks so.

What happened to people who had integrity, who did a job, got paid for their hard work, and just smiled afterward? Be happy you even have a job – let alone a job that pays you more than 98% of the people in America.

I have a wonderful idea for all those whiners: They can give their “unhappy job money” to a wonderful Elephant Rescue. It’s the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Africa. I will match the funds they donate."

This probably means that Megatron won't return for TF4 or at least he won't be voiced by Hugo.

Michael Bay is a twat.

Michael bay is correct about this. If Hugo didn't care, he shouldn't have said yes. Just like he shouldn't have signed on for more appearances as Red Skull if he knew he didn't want to do it.

Even though Michael Bay is a twat, he's right about this one.

Lets be clear about this. They (the studio) wanted Hugo to do it. They were prepared to pay a lot of money for him to do it.

He did it and took the money.

Then when a reporter asks him if it meant anything to him he said 'no'. And wasn't really bothered about the project.

I don't see any moaning or whining - just an honest answer. Maybe he was a bit mercenary - but they were prepared to pay him. More fool the studio for that!!

I've only seen the first Transformers film and having seen it I would have been more worried - indeed, offended - if he said it was a crucially important role for fulfilling his artistic aspirations.

If Hugo was a liar then he would be a 'twat'.

Bay, by creating an issue out of a non-issue, is the twat.

I hate Micheal Bay as a director but he is spot on the money here with his reply.

@Orphix

Hugo may have given an honest answer but he is the twat for saying yes and taking the money.

He said himself he didn't care for it nor think about it. Well then he should have said no and the studio could have moved on to whoever was next on the list.

Hmmm, kinda gota respect the honesty alround... But.. Maybe bay is reacting a tad.. I mean he wanted the voice, not the opinion and he payed/got it.

But the whole argument (even though there isn't really an argument) isn't about money!

Not until Bay decided it was. There was no moaning, grumbling or whining from Weaving. He just said he it was 'artistically meaningless' to him - which it probably was to [frick]ing Bay as well - at least I [frick]ing hope it was! He certainly directed the film that way.

Then Bay decides to make the whole thing about the global economy as if he made Transformers purely about repaying the national debt and saving elephants.

@SotoJuiceMan

Thanks for the unneeded "Blah blah".

Simple fact is Hugo didn't need to do the job,pretty sure he isn't so in need of work he needs to take on jobs he doesn't want. It's the same with Red Skull, he knew Marvel wanted him for more then one film, he wasn't really up for it but HE SIGNED ANYWAYS

Seriously bro.

" I was doing a play and I actually didn’t have time, anyway" - Hugo weaving.

He had work and didn't have time. Yes filmmaking is a business but if he didn't care nor really had the time, he should have said no.

Same with Red Skull, he didn't really want to sign on for 5 films but he did anyway.

This isn't some small time actor, this is Hugo Weaving, I'm pretty sure he's capable of getting roles he finds interesting.

No, he didn't entertain me in the transformers films, he didn't really add anything special to them and if he did, it was removed in post when Megatron's voice was edited.

Chris Evans is the perfect example. He was unsure he could commit to 5 films as Captain America and he really could his time in deciding. Hugo still isn't sure he wants to do even 1 more film as Red Skull but he signed anyways.

Kalel219

@SotoJuiceMan

It is a big deal that he didn't care. Picture all your favourite movies then replace the actors with people who do not want to be there doing it. If the role went to someone who did care, the movie would have been better for it as it would have shown through (Captain America more so then Transformers :P)

If he doesn't like box office franchises, DON'T DO THEM. It's simple. Stop thinking about it in terms of just money. If he wants to do more "meaningful" roles, then he should go do that. It sounds he was perfectly happy doing a play.

I cut out part of Hugo's quote because there was already a topic about it. No need to bother the users again with it. Michael's response was the important one.

I think context is everything.... It doesn't seem to me that Weaving was "whining" about anything. With the fan support TF gets, someone probably asked him how it felt to be the voice of Megatron and he gave that as an answer.
Bay needs to calm down. The movies are crap anyhow.

Orphix
Orphix - 10/18/2012, 6:59 AM
@Kevberg

I don't see his comment as a moan or even disrespecting the film. And the

"They wanted me to do it. In one way, I regret that bit. I don’t regret doing it, but I very rarely do something if it’s meaningless."

quote reads like an apology of sorts to me or that he did make a mistake taking on the work. Doesn't seem elitist to me.

Even if he was bad mouthing those films why does the fact it was two hours of voicework and he got paid loads of money to do it a factor? Surely bad mouthing any work you've done regardless of type of work or payment would make you look a tool.

Is Hugo Weaving preparing to commit suicide or something? It seems like he's on a roll of publicly hating seemingly every role he's played in the past 7 years.

Eh, Hugo sounds kind of dickish, but I can sort of empathize with him (and Paul Bettany for his recent comments). He does something small or "frivolous" for a paycheck, and it's all people ask him about, no matter whatever project he is currently promoting. Some actors learn to appreciate any praise or recognition for any of their roles (Patrick Stewart), and take it all in stride. Others get tired of the same dumb questions and speak their mind, to.unfortunately negative effect (Alec Guiness?).

I´m all for ambition in art, but in caees like this I´m with Bay. I´m sick of the hipocrisy of people who get a big fat paycheck and sign on, perfectly lucid, far as we can tell, to make big Hollywood blockbusters and then wanna whine about how it didn´t stand up to their high artistic standards. Don´t play the uncompromising starving artist card after you signed the deal with the devil and got the paycheck for it. If you´re feeling bad about the dirty money, donate it. Weaving stopped needing huge Hollywood paychecks to pay his bills way before TF.

Lol....

I am willing to bet most of you "haters" of the movie saw it in the theatres just like everyone else.

First Transformers was amazing. Just don't go into it expecting anything more than what it is. A popcorn action flick.

It's funny how action films always get bashed the most but are also viewed the most.

Perfect time to bring back the voice of Frank Welker as Megatron to the Movie Franchise. Who agrees?
