THE BOYS Showrunner Eric Kripke Explains The Decision For Episodes To Receive A Staggered Release

As we noted earlier today, The Boys has caused controversy by releasing episodes on a weekly basis rather than all in one go, and showrunner Eric Kripke now elaborates on why that decision was made!

Much to the chagrin of many fans, season 2 of The Boys hasn't been released in one go and after the first three episodes premiered last Friday, the rest will drop on Amazon week-by-week. That means it will take a total of six weeks to get through the entire season, and if the review bombing taking place is any indication, this decision has not been appreciated.

According to showrunner Eric Kripke, this was a creative choice made by the show's writers, and not a business decision dictated by Amazon.

"The airing schedule came actually when we were pretty close to being done – probably 3/4ths of the way through post-production," Kripke tells Collider. "For the record, it didn’t come from Amazon. It came from the producers… we’re the ones who pitched them. A lot of people over there were actually reluctant because it was a new idea or they don’t do it that often. We really wanted it and Amazon ended up agreeing that they’d give it a try."

The hope, according to Kripke, is that this will extend the discussion surrounding the series for more than a weekend. That will increase the buzz and hopefully the number of viewers tuning in.

"Our feeling is that when it airs all eight at once, it becomes a sugar rush of a binge," he continued. "People burn through it in a week or two. There’s an intense amount of activity and then it sort of fades. There’s so many great moments in season 2, we want to give it time to marinate so people can reflect on it and talk about it before they move on to the next thing and be in the conversation a little longer. I think a little anticipation for the fans is healthy."

Having something to look forward to isn't the worst thing in the world right now, though impatient fans used to binging TV shows like The Boys are definitely going to have to get used to the new norm.

I do kind of agree with the idea, but they should at least drop two at a time and then the finale, if anything. There is a luster that can be lost with binge-watching.
Origame

@MosquitoFarmer - yeah. After the episodes we got it feels like its a show that should be all at once. Maybe if the show was designed around that idea?
MosquitoFarmer
MosquitoFarmer - 9/8/2020, 11:51 AM
@Origame - Designed around that idea? The show was made in episodes.
Origame
Origame - 9/8/2020, 2:38 PM
@MosquitoFarmer - ...but not for said episodes to be released weekly. Its a pretty big difference between an episode that can be played whenever you want and an episode you're waiting a week for.
MosquitoFarmer
MosquitoFarmer - 9/8/2020, 4:13 PM
@Origame - You're making presumptions as well as I am. The writers for the episodes were mostly all different. I highly doubt they were focused on, or being told, that the episodes should ideally work if played directly concurrently as opposed to spread out separately. For a writer in an episodic series, I would imagine the idea is to make each one count as much as any other. Short of it being a precise creative decision (which this doesn't seem to be either way from the get go), episodes, by design, are meant to be separated.
Origame
Origame - 9/8/2020, 5:01 PM
@MosquitoFarmer - It's mentioned in the article that the decision to make the show weekly was in post production, when most of the show was done. and that was a direct quote from a producer, not a writer. I'm not presuming anything. I'm reading the f@#$ing article.
MosquitoFarmer
MosquitoFarmer - 9/8/2020, 5:12 PM
@Origame - I read the article too. That doesn't mean it was a creative decision to have to it watched wholly from the get go. Otherwise, they wouldn't have allowed it to be split into a weekly thing at all. It was clearly never a solid decision until they made a decision. Quit with the hostility, Butcher.
Origame
Origame - 9/8/2020, 5:26 PM
@MosquitoFarmer - ...again, read the article. there's a reason why everyone's making fun of the idea of this being new FOR AMAZON! Amazon never does weekly releases. So no. this is something they decided to do at the last minute because obviously an AMAZON show would be all at once.

And I won't be so hostile if you didn't try and insult my intelligence. There's clearly precedent for what I said.
MosquitoFarmer
MosquitoFarmer - 9/8/2020, 5:37 PM
@Origame - There is precedent to what you're saying; I just don't think they were worrying about it as strongly as you are when they were making the season. If an individual's own watch schedule were to affect any given episode (short of the first three which they chose to release together), I doubt they would have chosen to release them in the manner that they are.
Origame
Origame - 9/8/2020, 5:47 PM
@MosquitoFarmer - I mean, not worrying about it but how they're watching it is definitely something they would consider. Considering binging is incredibly popular, they're gonna write it with the idea the viewer is either watching it all at once. Considering the reception to the decision to go weekly, as well as the point made in this thread about the episodes feeling lackluster with the weekly release, its clear that's how it was written.
MosquitoFarmer
MosquitoFarmer - 9/8/2020, 5:58 PM
@Origame - I do absolutely agree with you on that, but I also feel they know that they cannot bank on how someone will watch a series anymore than they can bank on how someone will read a book, be it by one chapter at a time, or five, or three, or the whole book.
Origame
Origame - 9/8/2020, 6:03 PM
@MosquitoFarmer - but thats exactly what they are since they're releasing it in a way that forces a particular way of viewing. And books are kind of a bad example since they have similar levels of content to seasons of a show yet release all their chapters all at once.
MosquitoFarmer
MosquitoFarmer - 9/8/2020, 7:45 PM
@Origame - I don't really know what we're talking about anymore. Releasing each episode apart with time to sit and reflect seems like giving each episode a better chance to shine with viewers, especially with the built in anticipation. Given that it's a paid service, I think they should leave it to the viewer's discretion to decide. But, the showrunners also get to tell their story the way they want to first and foremost.
BlackConvoy
BlackConvoy - 9/9/2020, 2:52 AM
@Origame - Then they should have made a long movie. It’s a show with episodes. It’s meant to be shown episode by episode. People are just spoiled and entitled now. This show is absolutely, 100%, no different than a show on cable. If this was on Showtime, no one would be saying anything about it being released weekly. People say that shows like this are better in one viewing only because it’s serialized.
Origame
Origame - 9/9/2020, 3:14 AM
@MosquitoFarmer - by your opinion. But releasing it all at once gives the audience the choice to watch it however they want.
Origame
Origame - 9/9/2020, 3:16 AM
@BlackConvoy - how is this not just a really long movie? And the benefit of doing this with episodes is that, if you need to stop, you know exactly where you left off. Daredevil was literally made with the mindset of a long movie.

I knew they’d try to emulate the mandalorian release schedule. I remember watching a video from Grace Randolph where she was talking about how weekly episodes create a lot more buzz than when you drop everything at once and the buzz fades after a while.
