DJ Caruso Rumored To Be Directing Preacher

DJ Caruso Rumored To Be Directing Preacher

According to /Film, we may finally have some movement of the long time in development Hell adaptation of Garth Ennis' beloved Preacher comic series..

We haven't had anything solid on a Preacher movie since Sam Mendes ditched the project some time ago. And we still don't! But we do have the following rumor from /Film..

One of my well placed Hollywood spys informs me that Disturbia/Eagle Eye helmer DJ Caruso is in talks to direct a big screen adaptation of Preacher. This is said to be all dependent on the box office of his latest film, I Am Number Four. I have not been able to double source this rumor, but I thought I’d throw it out there to get your thoughts?

My thoughts are: Mehhhhhhhhh. I haven't seen I Am Number 4, but fairly soundly hated the shit out of both Disturbia and Eagle Eye. Then again, this guy is a big comic fan, having campaigned to get an adap of Y: The Last Man off the ground(albeit with Mr Lebouf as Yorick. Shia as Jesse Custer anyone?) for a long time. Maybe he is passionate enough to pull it off. Producer Neal Moretz recently said that a new director had signed on but did not name him. Could well be Caruso, but we shall see.

What do you think folks? Could this guy make a decent stab at getting across the incredibly controversial themes and characters in Preacher?

Preacher would work better as TV series like The Walking Dead.

Oh geez I guess this means we'll get stuck with Shia LeBouf as Jesse Custer or even worse...Shia trying to do an Irish accent as Cassidy. I hope this is not the case but I have a bad feeling about it. I'm probably gonna catch alot of flack for this but I can see Timothy Olyphant in the title role. He's so great on Justified.

@Glassjaw

I have every SINGLE issue of Preacher and Olyphant as Jesse would be SPOT-ON! Good job! I think he could totally do it. My money is on either Tim Roth or Colin Ferrel as Cassidy. Maybe Michael Ironsides as Herr Star?

WOW...thanks Ror, I havent heard any news on Preacher since HBO siad they where going to do this for a series back in 2005-2006 ish I believe.
Back then James Marsden was supposed to be involved. Think that was him..i cant remember now.

WHY would ANYONE even consider doing a feature-length film on this material? This property SCREAMS 'TV series'! ...and not some low-budget POS you'd expect from the Syfy Channel or the CW (sorry "Smallville' fans), I'm talking BIG BUDGET and totally cable (like the kind of money HBO threw at 'Boardwalk Empire'!) That is the ONLY format that would be able to do this total justice!

Uhm...Preacher has way too many INTERESTING AND AWESOME characters to be a feature length movie. A series would be better. Preferably on HBO or something.

@ Superzero: Thanks man! I was thinking maybe Dominic Monahan as Cassidy but Colin Farrel or Tim Roth would be awesome too. Good call on Michael Ironside, he would be perfect! I think Woody Harrelson or Bruce Willis could be pretty great also.

Preacher should never be turned into a movie. They would have to cut a lot of stuff. Kick-Ass suffered at the box office because you had an 11 year old girl saying "[foo foo]". They would simply have to castrate the story and the characters to make it more palatable for the masses. HBO series like MSK said would be the best way to bring the story to life due to the content and length. I'd love to see that. Starr... Funny f@cker.

@Canick

If there is one thing that Preacher is NOT it's "Christian". If you've read the comic you would know that. To say it is "Religious" would also be unfair as well. Preacher is satire.

@ loganoneil & MsKyle08

Agree with you about a series. Maybe if "The Dark Tower" is a hit as a Film/Tv Series a studio could go the same direction with Preacher? Think of it, they could go Film/Tv season and do the more adult oriented material in the "Movie Chapters". 3 movies and 3 seasons of a Tv series. Six chapters in total. That's PLENTY of room for most if not all of the comic series. "Gone to Texas" tpb could be theatrical film #1 and maybe the "Angelville" storyline as first tv season? John Cusack, Timothy Olyphant, or !gasp! Matthew Mcconaughey would make a great Jesse Custer. Yes. Matthew Mcconaughey. Tim Roth or Colin Ferrel for Cassidy. Charlize Theron or Cameron Diaz as Tulip. Frank Langella, Willem Dafoe, or Michael Ironside as Herr Star. Geoffrey Rush as St. Of Killers.
Anyway, I love Preacher and WANT to love the movie. But I'm not holding my breath.

Intruder@ James Franco is my favorite choice so far :)

James Franco as Jesse Custer

Scarlett Johansson as Tulip O´Hare

Michael Fassbender as Proinsias Cassidy

Willem Dafoe as Herr Starr

Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Arseface

Sharon Stone as Marie L´Angelle (with lots of make-up)

Vincent D´Onofrio as Allfather D´Aronique

Kevin Durand as Jody

Chris Cooper as Sheriff Hugo Root

And
Clint Eastwood as the Saint of Killers (he is pretty old yes but with todays special effects he could easily play the role. Clancy Brown is cool too but no one is cooler than the Dirty Harry himself)

@intruder and @alexdelarge:

all of the above is perfect but i would cast Matthew Mcconaughey as Jesse Custer. If Clint couldn't be ME...then maybe Josh Brolin!! (j/k)

I rather see this as a Mini Series on HBO.....Also.....NOOOOOOOO NOT DJ CARUSO!!!!!.....he ripped off Rear Window(regardless of what a judge says) and He will butcher Dead Space if he does it. I want a no holds bar director do this project, you can't hold back and make it PG-13 that would more blasphemous than the comic's themes.
PopeBadass
PopeBadass - 2/15/2011, 5:42 AM
Jessie is supposed to be about 24, most of these casting choices would be great 10 years ago (20 years in the case of John Cusack... John Cusack?!) Cassidy is supposed to be eternally 19 with some hard living behind him, but I do love Fassbender in the role. Clancy Brown owns as Saint of Killers, ditto for Kevin Durand as Jody, Sharon Stone is inspired as Gramma, and I like Peter Stormare (Lucifer in Constantine) as D'aronique. Dafoe's star would be scary as sh*t but I gotta say he could easily be that chickenfricken TC.
PopeBadass
PopeBadass - 2/15/2011, 5:54 AM
BTW I vote for an end to the Scarlett Johanssen casting. In all fairness she has a beautiful rack but, I'm just gonna come out and say it... she is kinda ugly. Now I know this is unpopular and I am truly sorry to offend, but she has an f'ed up nose and a dumpy ass. Plus she's really an average actress. I'm sure she's a lovely person and I assure you I have nothing against her, but she simply isn't "all that". Thank you and have a good day.

@Everyone who thinks that Preacher should be an HBO series instead of a movie... I wholeheartedly AGREE! Preacher is way to deep, long, and interesting to cut anything out to sqeeze into two hours.

@Ror- I didn't see Eagle Eye, but I heard it got pretty terrible reviews. I did however see Rear Wind... I mean Disturbia and I agree that it was a steaming pile. So, yes, meh indeed.

AlexDeLarge87 - 2/15/2011, 7:42 AM
MsKyle08@ thanks :) Scar Jo was just first who came in my mind. If Uma Thurman would be younger i would go with her.
Shaman
Shaman - 2/15/2011, 7:51 AM
Scarjo looks like she got stuck vomitting in a kiddy toilet and flushed accidentaly at the same time. As a result of the suction, it pulled/thinned down her chin and pouted her lips, having only her gigantic cheek bones keeping her from being sucked down the drain, whole. Take her rack away and she has shit. This is what she looks like without make-up:

And Thurnman looks like Scarjo's mom. That's not a compliment.
danwgriff
danwgriff - 2/15/2011, 8:20 AM
So I am correct in saying that if Scarjo walked up to you guys on the street and asked for your number, you would shoot her down. Huh.
