Preacher Movie May Start Next Year

All together now...lets PRAY. At least for a director!

Over at Collider they have an exclusive interview with producor Neal Moritz, and he releases som e information on The Preacher movie.

When asked the status he replied...

"We now have a terrific script that John August wrote. We were originally talking with Sam Mendes about doing the movie. Sam Mendes is going to go off and do the Bond movie, so there’s another director that we’re talking to right now.I hopefully will be shooting that movie next year."

One of the most important things im sure we are wondering is the tone of the movie....

"We’ve got a great script. John August wrote a script that I think is terrific. The hardest thing was with all the books-the Preacher books-was how to distill it down. And what he made the smart decision instead of trying to cram everything into one, there’s plenty of room for 2 or 3 movies. So that’s what he’s done and he’s done a really faithful adaption but made it probably more accessible to a broader audience right now. That movie’s definitely R-rated and it’s an amazing central character".

John August has shown more than a writing interest in the project aswell as Moritz says...

"I had a meeting with him recently and we started talking about directors and we were talking about some really, you know, lofty directors. And he said you know if you don’t get one of those I’d be interested in it. I said we’ll talk about it".

Well i have heard the rumours before but im feeling a little more hopeful after this interview.Lets just hope they treat it with respect :D

Moritz also lets details go about Sinbad, Escape from New York and the Boys, hit the link below to read the full interview, or visit EarthsMightiest.com for my article...pimpin.

I hope this happens this time. After seeing Kick-Ass, I know the violent/tongue-in-cheek majesty of Preacher could be realised well on screen. And I also love Mendes. Preacher!!! PREACHER!!!

I am all for Preacher being made but I hope they dont 'distill' the story too much and end up stripping away what makes preacher so awesome!

I'm sorry, I love Preacher, but they can not make a film out of it that truely does it justice, same with Sandman. It will be watered down and lose the meanings behind it.

I hope this stays in development hell. All of the Vertigo properties made into movies have been crap. Complete and utter shite. The first problem is this statement:

The hardest thing was with all the books-the Preacher books-was how to distill it down. And what he made the smart decision instead of trying to cram everything into one, there’s plenty of room for 2 or 3 movies. So that’s what he’s done and he’s done a really faithful adaption but made it probably more accessible to a broader audience right now.

More accessible to a broader audience? Last time I heard that in a CBM it was Constantine and Keanu Reeves was talking about how cool it was to have a "Holy Shotgun". The only thing a statement like that confirms is that they need to dumb it down. Then came V for Vendetta which had quite a few changes from source material that changed the tone. I know everyone likes to tout it as one of the most amazing CBMs ever. Honestly, if I wasn't familiar with the source material, then I would probably think it was a pretty okay flick. Of course if I had never read Phoenix saga I would've thought Singer was a "genius" with what he did to the X-men stories, too. This, Death, and Sandman should stay in production hell.

McLovin - 4/9/2010, 10:31 AM
Anil - Guy is too old.

punkazz - That is a good point. But much like Talontd, I also enjoyed Constantine as a stand alone movie. Why? Because I never read Hellblazer. The same think happened to me when I saw League of Extraordinary Gents. I thought is was not bad, but all of my friends who read the Allan Moore books thought I was crazy and that the movie was an insult to the source material. I didn't read V either, therefore I found the movie to be GREAT! So it's not the movies are shit, but its that they are not as good as the source material. So what's my point? I'm sure if we ever get to watch Preacher, it will never be as good as the books, but we will still get an above average movie and will be lucky if it gets made. IMO anyways ...

KeithM - 4/9/2010, 11:37 AM
@McLovin: I hadn't read the LoEG books before seeing the movie either. And I could still tell it was shite. It's a bad movie, period, let alone a bad adaptation.

I can see the argument with V - I read the originals, starting with Warrior, and although it does change things considerably, they still managed to make a reasonable film all the same.

Constantine is more LoEG than V though - it's a fairly average movie in its own right - but as an adaptation it utterly stinks. If they'd have adapted Hellblazer, the comic, it would have been original and groundbreaking. As it was, we got just another Hollywood demon-fighter. Perhaps you liked it as it was, but I can tell you, it would have been another level or ten better if they'd stuck more closely to the source.

As is nearly always the case. The trick is in knowing HOW to adapt it, without losing too much. Kick-Ass, for example, does this perfectly, actually improving on the comic in the process, giving it heart where the comic had only cynicism. Now that's a rarity indeed.

For that reason, and because all we're hearing about this project as time goes by is that it is being gradually degraded step-by-step as it gets passed through various hands, as various directors are mooted then dropped, I'm getting less and less hopeful that this will be done justice.

Preacher shouldn't be more accessible for a broader audience - it SHOULD be controversial and a hard sell. It should make the fuss about Kick-Ass look tame in comparison. This highlights the problem with the Hollywood studio system - too afraid to take risks, always wanting to play it safe.

A part of me is hoping that it won't happen as a movie and that it will become an HBO project, where it can be told in more depth, properly.
McLovin
McLovin - 4/9/2010, 12:09 PM
Keith - I agree with the HBO statement and have been saying it all along. I said the same thing about the Walking Dead, since it will be just as hard to deliver without the Hollywood watering down process.

I'm not so sure that they are afraid to take chances as they are afraid of two factors:

1. The controversy that would come from a movie like Preacher, since the Catholic Church would be all over it before it's even released. Many of the religious extremists would be up in arms about it and we would not hear the end of it for several months to come.

2. The negative publicity about it being a defamation on God/religion as well as heresy and so forth, would more than likely hurt sales. Which let's be honest, it is the only reason why any movies get made. No studio is interested in expressing the artist's views or doing it simply for the sake of art. It's all about the Benjamins baby.
BillyBlack
BillyBlack - 4/9/2010, 12:17 PM
God I hope they can actually do this right.

Constantine coulda been great, if they got Guy Pierce to play JC. Keanu is so wooden I want to yell "timber!" evrytime he falls over.

P862010 - Ruffalo is a name I haven't heard before... and me like.
KeithM
KeithM - 4/9/2010, 12:43 PM
@McLovin: I agree with your points - as is, it would surely raise a stink of biblical proportions (did you see what I did there? :coat:), so perhaps Hollywood should take a 'hands-off' approach. If you can't do it justice, if you don't think the story will make bank as it is, don't do it at all. I mean, there's not exactly a shortage of more immediately 'bankable', less controversial comic books to adapt...

If they're going to make a movie, I'd rather see a Kick-Ass approach - do it outside the studio system and let it make bank or not based on its merits as a movie, not on whether they can water it down just enough to satisfy the McDonalds Happy Meal demographic.

punkazzINC - 4/9/2010, 1:15 PM
@McLovin - So lemme get this straight, you are okay with mediocrity? In a time when we have the bar set by Sin City and 300 and you are fine with mediocre adaptations? I'm sorry, but I don't get that at all. We should be striving for great story telling and full on translation rather than watered down adaptation. If they cannot do that then they shouldn't bother at all.
McLovin
McLovin - 4/9/2010, 1:20 PM
Keith - *snicker*(pretty clever)- Yeah I would hope they would do that. But we both know that ain't happening. The only shot of this staying even remotely close to the books, would be on a network like HBO, Showtime etc ... but if this gets picked up by a major studio, you better be ready for major disappointment. Will I still watch it? Probably. The problem this time for me is, unlike V and Hellblazer, I have read Preacher and will sure to be among those dissapointed by the Preacher-Lite version they will put out.

p.s. LOL! McDonalds Happy Meal demographic always ruining for the rest of us.

Bresticles - I like that idea! I think he could pull it off!

McLovin
McLovin - 4/9/2010, 1:29 PM
punkazzINC - I would not say I'm fine with it. I would say I have come to expect it. Too often I am dissapointed when a movie does not live up to my expectations. I'm not saying it makes it ok, but what is the alternative? Boycott all these water down versions and miss out on 75% of all CBMs? Truly I am torn because I really wish I could do that. But the reality is I will watch it whether or not I think the interpretation will be true to the source. Whether I see at the movies or DVD may be another thing to consider (or how many times I will watch it for that matter), but eventually they will get me too. I truly don't have any hope that this movie will have a true interpretation, but will I still watch it if it is made? Sadly ... yes

I would like to see David Fincher or Marc Forster on the director´s chair if Mendes doesnt do it.

Guy Pearce or James Franco for Rev. Jesse Custer
Kate Winslet or Scarlett Johansson for Tulip O´Hare
Ewan McGregor or Michael Fassbender for Proinsias Cassidy
Willem Dafoe for Herr Starr
Joseph Gordon-Levitt for Arseface
Chris Cooper for Sheriff Hugo Root
Michael Madsen for Simon Coltrane aka the Serial Killer Reaver Cleaver
Mickey Rourke or Woody Harrelson for Jody
and
Sharon Stone for Marie L´Angelle (With lots of makeup of course)

Its so sad that David Carradine is dead. He would have been awesome as The Saint of Killers.
Beside him i know just a few guys who would nail that role perfectly. Mickey Rourke, Jeff Bridges, Liam Neeson and Clint Eastwood.

Teeeeeeeeeeeeeeea! good stuff man. I knew that Mendes bastard would leave this! For frackin James Bland of all things! If this winds up being Loui Letterier's next project I'm buying a gun and swimming to America by God.

Guys, there is no such thing as bad controversy..unless its a controversy caused by the movie sucking! Nobody gives a flying [frick] what the Catholic church says or does or thinks these days anyway, any movie criticizing them would most likely be praised by the majority or free thinking individuals. And even at that, look at Dogma? Kevin Smith's Preacher lite. Big shit storm which ended up making a quite mediocre movie a nice little earner

Please, no big name star to fit any major characters! although that CAN be one big factor for seeing a movie of which you may have little to no knowledge of, i believe theres a chance that could spoil Preacher completely.. will it be a straight toss of a coin in the studio between hiring either guy pearce or tom cruise? lol.

Even putting aside the fact of hundreds of fans being out there, the heavy religious tone of Preacher (from writer Garth Ennis, a "confirmed athiest" according to his wiki) would surely be enough to make this film popular at the box office. Especially in the USA, controversy, especially when religion is concerned-is always a going to have a major influence in pulling in those crowds ;)

i agree with IsiahBradley on the Guy Pearce face thing.
Also i think that most of the actors mentioned are, to be fair, too old to be Jesse.
The only guy mentioned that i reckon is a similair age bracket and also a good actor is James Franco. Maybe a little to pretty? but Jesse is a good looking guy.
I welcome a film but agree the HBO route would be a far better contender for 'keeping it real' lol.
And AlexDeLarge666, Kate Winslet as Tulip? well really sir. I may be allowing my general Hatr...er dislike of the lady to overwhelm me just now but she doesnt look right to me and i cant see her being Tulipesque in any way really. (i know shes an actor and is supposed to be able to play different roles but i just cant see Tulip)and shes too old as well. But spot on for some of the other roles. Carradine would have been cool. but i reckon Clint would do it for the hell of it.
