After languishing in development hell for years, Garth Ennis's misanthropic masterpiece finally gets a director.

First it was nearly a movie staring Xmens James Marsden and directed by Ghost Riders Mark Steven Johnson(thank god it was just a nearly!). Then HBO were set to produce a weekly show..but now fans of the controversial comic can rejoice as non other than Mr Winslet himself, Sam Mendes has signed on to direct a feature film version.

This Supernatural project is a departure for Mendes, who is best known for tackling suburban angst in such films as "American Beauty" and the upcoming Leonardo DiCaprio-Kate Winslet starrer "Revolutionary Road."

But Mendes isn't new to the world of comicbooks: His drama "Road to Perdition" was also adapted from a graphic novel.

Neal Moritz ("I Am Legend") is producing through his Sony-based Original Film banner alongside Kickstart Prods. Jason Netter ("Wanted"). Ken Levin and Ori Marmur exec produce.

Columbia is also developing another Ennis comicbook, "The Boys," which Moritz and Netter are producing together. (more on that later!)

The 75-issue "Preacher" series, which ran from 1995-2000, has been lauded with numerous kudos, including four Eisner Awards.

Regretably, they will probably water this down so it doesn't offend the church, or it will be heavily bashed by religious groups. Add all the graphic violence and sexually questionable conducts some characters have, and I see a probable Dragonball kind of mistake, changed beyond recognition from it's original idea.

well thats always a possibility. i just have hope that mendes has the balls not to mess with the more controversial aspects. hell its all controversial! thats what preachers about.

any casting choices?

i think josh brolin from no country for old men would make a good jesse custer..although he might be a bit old

cillian murphy for cassidy..but they would have to ugly him up a bit!

tulip is a hard one..it will prob end up being kate winslet!

never happen but..clint [frick]in eastwood as the saint of killers

well, whoever it is is going to be covered in prostetics anyway with most of his dialouge subtitled! still should be a good actor of course....robert de nero!

mmm who can portray emotions covered in prosthetics and with no dialoge (most importantly his ego has to withstand being called arseface afterwards). Don't know if DeNiro would lend himself for that, hell I wouldn't risk it being called arseface afterwards.

If they start messing with the controversy, this movie goes straight down the toilet.

Agreed..theres no wiggle room there, thats the essence of preacher. its all about pushing boundries and freedom of speech..so should the movie.

Dude, i was never a huge vertigo fan either..but Preacher is without a doubt the craziest, funniest, sickest, most imaginative thing ive ever read. Just read the first graphic novel "Gone to Texas" and youl be hooked

Sandman is even better ..but much much different

I remember that Rachel Talalay version. Sam Jackson as the Saint of Killers, Cameron Diaz as Tulip, & Robert Carlyle was up for Cassidy (the only part of the casting that i loved. Maybe they can bring him back into it. Who doesn't love robert carlyle.
Whoever they choose for the newest-hopeful production, they better pick people that know what the hell they're doing with the part. Mendes is great, so I can't imagine him making this badly.
I've still got a copy of Ennis' original script. I wonder if that's even been passed around the table for a basis.

yeah i remember that, carlyle was a good choice for cassidy..but it was being directed by the chick who made tankgirl so i didnt have high hopes!

so is his script based around gone to texas or does he add bits and pieces from the other issues?

I never even heard of, Preacher, and from what I am hearing... it sounds good. I am not sure who directed Constantine; and loved that movie, but maybe that should be the one to do it. Yet again... when I saw the mobster film, Road to Perdition, it was good. So hearing that will be the director leaves me happy.

For I also never knew it was a comic book adaptation, and I didn't care about that. It was still good.
