AMC is hopping aboard the augmented reality mobile game train, announcing today the upcoming release of The Walking Dead: Our World. Inspired by the hit television show based on Robert Kirkman's series of graphic novels, The Walking Dead: Our World puts players in the middle of the post-apocalyptic world filled with the undead.

Similar to Pokemon GO and other games of this nature, The Walking Dead: Our World will take your location in the real-world, use the surrounding area as an in-game map, and populate it with walkers, missions and other activities that can be completed. As you explore the real world, your character will move within the digital game world where you can fight walkers, complete missions, rescue survivors and discover hidden stashes.

Multiplayer support will be offered, allowing you to team up with others to complete weekly challenges and earn bigger rewards. Additionally, characters from the AMC show - Rick, Daryl, and Michonne - will also help you along the way.

"The Walking Dead: Our World lets players fight walkers wherever and whenever they want: on the streets, in the park and on their sofa," AMC teases. A trailer for the game was also released.

The Walking Dead: Our World will release globally on Thursday, July 12, for iOS and Android devices. You can pre-register today.

The Walking Dead is hardly the only franchise to attempt to capitalize on the augmented reality craze. Pokemon GO developer Niantic, Inc. is working on Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, a similar-type game inspired by the magical world created by J.K. Rowling. Sony also announced Ghostbusters World which is releasing later this year and will have a hands-on demo available at San Diego Comic-Con next month. So while there's no shortage of AR, location-based mobile games, one based on The Walking Dead will undoubtedly be welcomed by fans. And then, of course, we still have Overkill's The Walking Dead, a multiplayer game coming to consoles and PC in November of this year.

Do you guys think AMC needs to read the room about the Zombie interest greatly diminishing? I feel we're past the intense interest it had a few years back (maybe 5?)

But that could just be me, curious what you guys think.
