Andrew Lincoln And Frank Darabont On The Past, Present And Future Of The Walking Dead!

Executive producer, director and writer Frank Darabont along with star Andrew Lincoln discuss the beginnings of the show, what we can expect from the last two episodes and how the series might eventually end...

"I remember thinking, 'Please! This is not what I signed up for!'" Andrew Lincoln (Rick Grimes) said of the moment in the second episode of the hit TV show when his character hatches a plan to escape the zombie horde by trying to look, and smell, like one of them. The actor went on to reveal that he improvised the line that effectively stops the scene ("We need more guts") only because he wanted the scene to end! As for what it was like for him and Steven Yeun (Glenn) to walk through Atlanta covered in intestines and severed limbs: "Afterward, Steven asks me, 'Is this normal for Hollywood?' And I said, 'Far from normal, my friend. Far from normal.'"

While fans and critics alike have so far been very positive towards the show, it looks like there will be even more changes from the comic book in the final two episodes of the season when the survivors trek to the Centers for Disease Control. "The end of the season brings our characters—and the audience— to key questions," said Frank Darabont. "Are there answers? Is there hope? Is there any structure or authority or government working on our behalf? That’s a pretty legitimate question even without a zombie apocalypse."

Looking back to before the show even hit screens though, Darabont shared his thoughts on how he felt when the casting director approached him with the suggestion that little known British actor Andrew Lincoln should play Rick Grimes. "I was like, 'Are you kidding me? I’m looking for a cross between Gary Cooper and Sam Shepard and you’re giving me the Love Actually guy?' What’s weird for me now is that whenever I hear him talk with his English accent, I’m like, 'Where’s Rick? Stop pretending you’re British!'" It seems that Lincoln was just as surprised to get the job though. However, he still reveals that it was nothing short of a dream come true. "I got an e-mail outlining the project. The first thing I read was 'AMC.' I went, 'Great! I’ve been waiting for an AMC opportunity!' Then it said 'The Walking Dead.' Terrific title. Then the names. 'Frank Darabont.' 'Gale Anne Hurd.' Great. And then it said 'Zombie survival horror.' I think I actually did a literal double take. I was like, 'Really?!' I was a bit reticent. It was only the next day, when they sent me this top secret script, that it really dawned on me what the show had a chance to do, and I got very excited."

But what of the future of the show? Well, it turns out that before he begins hashing out next season, Darabont would like to figure how the series will ultimately end. "My next big conversation with Robert, now that we’ve gotten through the first six, will be: ‘What is your endgame, Robert? I can’t believe I have not asked you this!’ I kinda wanna know Robert’s idea, for my own sanity and purposes. I’ll let you know what he tells me."

No worries. We’re not in a rush for The Walking Dead to die anytime soon. For more, be sure to check out the next issue of Entertainment Weekly!

Nice find @Josh!
I loving the show so far, it has been amazing! Specially the last episode "Vatos", was the best one so far.
Yeah it goes in a different way from the comics, but still is great. Andrew Lincoln is an amazing actor, he is pulling of the character very well!
I hope this show have more seasons, and they shouldnt bring the apocalypse zombie explanation so soon, leave that to the end, god damn the comics havent explained that yet neither!.

despite the fillers the show rocks. they are not anime style fillers which are just for laughs. the fillers here emphasize and deepen on the characters...

Thanks guys! :) I recently sat down and read The Walking Dead from volume 1 - 12 (currently waiting for vol. 13 to be released) and loved them. The show has also been amazing so far, especially "Vatos" as Lucaxmen points out, and like the direction they're taking the show in. Am I a little disappointed that it's not more faithful to the comic book? Definitely. But only because Kirkman created so many amazing moments. If season 2 doesnt feature the prison and the Governor though, I'll be very annoyed. :)

Lincoln's portrayal of Rick reads a bit like Gary Sinise, with that every-man likability.

Only six episodes to a season? That kinda sucks.

Only six in the first season. Second will have 13. As to an endgame, there's not supposed to be one. The comic book was written to never end. The point of it being that zombie movies have an end. This story was supposed to slowly chronicle the life after the zombie apocalypse, forever more. And there is SO much in the comic book I hope they don't change too much.

Ok, first off let me just say that I LOVE the show and am a HUGE fan of the comic..but I do have some complaints. How many times have ANY of you read a great novel or comic book series and the film makers change the plot and you are LIVID as a result? It's no longer the comic book or the book that you read. The REASON you get so pumped to watch a filmed version of your favorite read is because you want to see what you've read on the big screen/tv screen. Now, i'm all for building on plot points but damn...they are changing the Walking Dead way too much! It's almost not even the same story anymore. I understand why there are certain changes made, for example, to expand on the story. But, couldn't they have done that by maybe, each episode, telling the back story of each of the characters from the main group and, as a result, you end up really caring about them? What's with creating whole new scenes and plots????? I find myself now not so much watching the show enjoying it for what I'd already read, but now I watch it and really notice the major changes to the story. Yeah, the main plot is still there, the zombie plague, the group, but Murl and his brother? The latino gang at the old age home, the CDC? No Alan and Donna...no TWINS?! The twins were a major, major issue in the comic. I had originally read that there were supposed to be some changes made to the TV series for surprise sake, so those who had read the comic didn't know what to expect. But...the people that are killed off ARE the same people that are killed off in the comic so..what was the point? And it surprises me that Darabont, who, with Stephen King's work, stuck so close to HIS source material, would change SO much about the comic. People who are Harry Potter freaks (me being one of them)absolutely lose their [frick]ing minds when the story has been changed or certain scenes left out. That hasn't been the case with this. Everyone is continually praising the series. Which is why I wish like hell I hadn't read the comic series, so I could just enjoy the tv show.

Great show. AMC continues to put out the best products.

...and yes, it is the 2nd best show IMO. Breaking Bad is still #1, but it is very close.
