Interview With Walking Dead Director Frank Darabont

How fast should a zombie run? Find out Frank's thoughts plus, a very cool animated slide show on how The Walkers decay one stage at a time.

One thing is for sure. Frank Darabont loves Zombies. The award winning director (The Shawshank Redemption) came across Robert Kirkman's series about five years ago in a comic book shop and has been working to adapt it ever since. The TV series, currently shooting in the sweltering heat of Atlanta and surrounding areas, is on track for an October premier. Darabont took some time to talk about where things are on set.

Frank Darabont's love for the undead:
"I've always wanted to do my take on the zombie mythos, since I was a kid and I saw Romero's Night of the Living Dead - the 1968 black and white version. For our zombie show I'm calling that the Book of Genesis, and whenever there's a question about zombie behavior I go back to Night of the Living Dead. Here's my favorite thing: the endless debate among the fans about how fast a zombie can move. There are the folks who just can't stand seeing zombies running. I'm kind of in that camp, but if you look at the very first zombie in Night - the one in the cemetery chasing Barbara, he gets up to a pretty good jog. I'm keying our zombie behavior off of that film: Whether they're in a very languid state or they're on the attack, they'll move no faster than that first zombie in Night of the Living Dead."

The differences between this TV series and other zombie films:

"One of the things I found most intriguing about The Walking Dead was that it was so focused on the characters. Within the context of the cool zombie apocalypse, there was this very serious character drama. I thought, this is a great opportunity to satisfy not only zombie fans, but bring in an audience that wouldn't normally, necessarily, seek out a zombie film to watch."

Darabont also touched base on what he is shooting right now:

"Right now we're filming the shootout that kicks things off for the series. It's the kind of thing I haven't had a chance to do that often in my career. Most of my movies tend to be very sweet, talking dramas. I haven't had a chance to do that much action. So I'm actually getting a lot of my desire for that sort of thing out right now, and expressing my desire to roll a car six times. Yeah baby, I'm there! Let's load those guns with more blanks, absolutely. The first zombie is up tomorrow. It's going to be the very first scene of the entire series -- a good, gut-punch of a scene right off the bat."

I'm not interested in his zombies. Allz i wants to know is, is he gonna be given the priviledge of doing The Dark Tower, since JJ Abrams' punk ass left us all hanging with that!

Sorry, I get emotional about the dark tower...lol, but it needs to be made, that sh*t would surpass LOTR!

I LOVED THE BOOK, but i've only read it till' the governer issue.
I hope, i seriously hope this would be not only a good series, but a great one.

I think this will fill the void that has been since Lost ended.

I'm so glad they got Darabont to make this show. He knows horror so well. I have high hopes for Walking Dead.

Afterwards, I'd love to see him tackle another Stephen King story. Nobody in this day and age can adapt a Stephen King story like Darabont

@rolanddeschain. Ron Howard has signed on to adapt the THE DARK TOWER. Coming from myself (who is the biggest Dark Tower nerd of all time) Howard couldnt pull it off. They need Darabont or Del Toro to do the books.

As for Walking Dead cannot wait!!!! Series is amazing, hoping Darabont knows what he is doing.

I feel sorry for whatever kid they will have playing Carl. In the books he is like 8 years old and if full grown actors have admitted (Simon Pegg for one) that the zombie actors in costume and in character can be scary, how will this affect a child actor?

Most of the time adult tv shows (Dexter for example) are able to shield their child actors from the graphic and scary parts of the script and the shoot, but that just wouldn't work here since Carl kills more than a few zombies himself. I just hope it doesn't mess him up for life.

jojo risin@ I agree with 99% of what you say, the only thing I don't agree with is the difficulty of location filming. The majority of stuff outside of NYC, and some random forest/desert area can be done with green screen. No way you could do Lud, or the Waste Lands on location somewhere, but places like the Calla, the desert where he follows the man in black can be done, no prob. let's keep our fingers crossed.

kickass2193@ If that's true about Ron Howard, i'm gonna be sick!! He couldn't even pull off 2 sure fire can't miss hits with the Da vinci code & angels & demons! Do you have a link with that news? I have to read this 4 myself, with pepto bismol in hand... :-)
