Morning Funny: CDC Launches Zombie Apocalypse Survival Guide

Morning Funny: CDC Launches Zombie Apocalypse Survival Guide

I am quite sure a lot of you already know how to defend yourselves in the event of a zombie apocalypse but for those who are not in the know, the Center for Disease Control has released their official guide to surviving a zombie invasion.

From the CDC website: There are all kinds of emergencies out there that we can prepare for. Take a zombie apocalypse for example. That’s right, I said z-o-m-b-i-e a-p-o-c-a-l-y-p-s-e. You may laugh now, but when it happens you’ll be happy you read this, and hey, maybe you’ll even learn a thing or two about how to prepare for a real emergency.

Of course the CDC releasing this guide doesn't exactly validate the existence of the undead (discounting Gusto), this preparedness kit is more of a "in case it does happen" type of situation.

A Brief History of Zombies

We’ve all seen at least one movie about flesh-eating zombies taking over (my personal favorite is Resident EvilExternal Web Site Icon.), but where do zombies come from and why do they love eating brains so much? The word zombie comes from Haitian and New Orleans voodoo origins. Although its meaning has changed slightly over the years, it refers to a human corpse mysteriously reanimated to serve the undead. Through ancient voodoo and folk-lore traditions, shows like the Walking Dead were born.

Preparedness Tips

So what do you need to do before zombies…or hurricanes or pandemics for example, actually happen? First of all, you should have an emergency kit in your house. This includes things like water, food, and other supplies to get you through the first couple of days before you can locate a zombie-free refugee camp (or in the event of a natural disaster, it will buy you some time until you are able to make your way to an evacuation shelter or utility lines are restored). Below are a few items you should include in your kit, for a full list visit the CDC Emergency page.

* Water (1 gallon per person per day)
* Food (stock up on non-perishable items that you eat regularly)
* Medications (this includes prescription and non-prescription meds)
* Tools and Supplies (utility knife, duct tape, battery powered radio, etc.)
* Sanitation and Hygiene (household bleach, soap, towels, etc.)
* Clothing and Bedding (a change of clothes for each family member and blankets)
* Important documents (copies of your driver’s license, passport, and birth certificate to name a few)
* First Aid supplies (although you’re a goner if a zombie bites you, you can use these supplies to treat basic cuts and lacerations that you might get during a tornado or hurricane)

# Identify the types of emergencies that are possible in your area. Besides a zombie apocalypse, this may include floods, tornadoes, or earthquakes. If you are unsure contact your local Red Cross chapter for more information. Family members meeting by their mailbox. You should pick two meeting places, one close to your home and one farther away
# Pick a meeting place for your family to regroup in case zombies invade your home…or your town evacuates because of a hurricane. Pick one place right outside your home for sudden emergencies and one place outside of your neighborhood in case you are unable to return home right away.
# Identify your emergency contacts. Make a list of local contacts like the police, fire department, and your local zombie response team. Also identify an out-of-state contact that you can call during an emergency to let the rest of your family know you are ok.
# Plan your evacuation route. When zombies are hungry they won’t stop until they get food (i.e., brains), which means you need to get out of town fast! Plan where you would go and multiple routes you would take ahead of time so that the flesh eaters don’t have a chance! This is also helpful when natural disasters strike and you have to take shelter fast.

And just in case there is an actual outbreak of the Walking Dead, the CDC promises to protect you and get to the root source of the infection. Which as we all know is crap because as you all saw from the First Season of The Walking Dead, the Zombies ate everybody at the center except for that one crazy dude who tried to kill the survivors.

Never Fear – CDC is Ready
If zombies did start roaming the streets, CDC would conduct an investigation much like any other disease outbreak. CDC would provide technical assistance to cities, states, or international partners dealing with a zombie infestation. This assistance might include consultation, lab testing and analysis, patient management and care, tracking of contacts, and infection control (including isolation and quarantine). It’s likely that an investigation of this scenario would seek to accomplish several goals: determine the cause of the illness, the source of the infection/virus/toxin, learn how it is transmitted and how readily it is spread, how to break the cycle of transmission and thus prevent further cases, and how patients can best be treated. Not only would scientists be working to identify the cause and cure of the zombie outbreak, but CDC and other federal agencies would send medical teams and first responders to help those in affected areas (I will be volunteering the young nameless disease detectives for the field work).

But lets be honest, how many people will actually remember a zombie survival guide if there really is an outbreak? lol its like how people forget to use the door that says "exit" during a fire.
@ angus...i was joking too. lol

@SelinaKyle

Too true. People will panic first before getting a grip to remember the rules. That's why there usually aren't alot of survivors.

@ nuck82- I do the same thing except with malls. I try to shop at malls that have an adequately supplied food court, a sporting goods store w/ firearms, a Sharper Image, a Select Comfort store (have to get my beauty sleep), and a Bath & Bodyworks (because things may get smelly.) Plus the mall has to be fortifable in the event I'm called into survival mode.

Speaking of Safe houses, a polish firm designed a zombie safe house.

Scared of zombies? Concerned about the apocalypse? Have we got the house for you.

A Polish architectural firm has designed the world's first zombie-proof abode — the "Safe House".

It's not really inspired by the walking dead, but it's been getting plenty of attention as the world celebrates its fifth annual Zombie Awareness Month.

Built between 2005 and 2009, the house features Rubik's Cube-type movable parts and folds in on itself completely at the end of the day to seal against outside threats.

"Every day the house acts in a similar way — it wakes up every morning to close up after dusk," says architect Robert Konieczny of KWK Promes.

Located on the outskirts of Warsaw, the Safe House has just one entrance, on the second floor, connected by a drawbridge.

For extra security, after crossing the bridge, visitors have to wait within a safety zone before being let into the rest of the house.

During the day, the house opens onto a garden and the movable walls change position to create a courtyard.

"There is no risk of children escaping to the street area in an uncontrolled way while playing in the garden," says Mr Konieczny.

I would get a sword and a suit of armor so they couldn't bite me. I wonder why you never see anyone in zombie movies wear one? I'm sure you could raid a museum or some rich guys mansion when the zombie apocalypse happens. Or be like Tony Stark and build one.
I guess you could just wear a thick leather motorcycle outfit and helmet, cause it's pretty tough to bite through leather.

that doesnt look like i very zombie save house, to many windows, even if there bullet proof or what not, no windows should be on the bottom floor, and i wouldnt want them looking in at me lol, that would be creepy waking up in the morning and zombies at the window looking at you, im just saying

The only problem with this coming from the CDC is that they ARE the cause of the outbreak!! Don't trust 'em people. They are working on wicked brain viruses right now. The Zombie Apolcalypse Survival Guide by Max Brooks is the only way to go.

lol, anyone who hasn't read Max Brook's Zombie Survival Guide or World War Z needs to go out and buy them, download them, whatever right now. They are truly awesome. WWZ gets into all the things like armor, odd survival refuges, and the way the humans retake the mainlands. Great book, really.

@ MaddMonkk- A vampire infestation? Simple. Become a garlic farmer and live in the middle of your plantation of garlic. No fear on the vampires anyway unless you are living in the polar regions of Earth were they won't run and hide at dawn.

No guns. Guns jam, need bullets, and bullets will become scarse in the months after said Zombie Apocalypse.

Instead, use a high-grade sharp metallic object, such as a machete or an axe. Remember kiddies: blades don't need reloading!

you have got to be kidding me with the no guns thing. Swords require you to get up close and personal and if you use one then you are going to get zombie fluids all over you. Depending on the type of zombie you are as good as dead if you get zombie gore on you.

First thing I would if a zombie invasion would happen is grab a weapon and start hacking away.
But...if I had to take care of a group that is a really good list you've made out
