The Hollywood Reporter reveals that following the filming of the pilot, the still untitled companion series to The Walking Dead has now been ordered to series and renewed for a second season. The first season is set to run for six one hour long episodes (just like the first run of its parent series) and will premiere "late summer" with season two following in 2016. Robert Kirkman co-wrote the pilot with Dave Erickson (Sons of Anarchy) and Adam Davidson is directing. According to the site, "the series is a prequel that takes place in Los Angeles at the onset of the zombie outbreak." The cast includes Cliff Curtis (Gang Related), Kim Dickens (House of Cards), Frank Dillane (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince), and Alycia Debnam Carey (Into the Woods). Here's the first image:

"We take incredibly seriously the notion of building a satisfying companion series to the No. 1 show on television. From the beginning of The Walking Dead on AMC, we’ve been asked questions about what was going on in other parts of the zombie apocalypse, and what it looked like as the world really did ‘turn.’ Through this new series, we’re going to find out." AMC president Charlie Collier said in a statement released today announcing the two season order of the series. "Robert Kirkman, Dave Erickson and their writing team, along with an incomparable set of producers, cast and crew have created something remarkable and clearly distinct. We respectfully follow the request of Monty Python as we bring out (the latest of) our Dead."

"We feel empowered by this two-season commitment, a serious show of faith from our network partner AMC," Kirkman added. "I personally take it as a sign that they believe, like we do, that we've accomplished our goal of developing something original that can pay tribute to the original show and expand the world I created while at the same time having something new to say with this story. I’m very grateful that we now have the opportunity to tell this amazing story and show the fans that we really haven't scratched the surface yet when it comes to The Walking Dead."

The whole "What happens years after the outbreak happened and how society now exist" is what makes TWD special but now they are taking the generic zombie outbreak story and making a whole season around it. I fully expect cliched characters and maybe a cure storyline.

I like the Walking Dead, but isnt a spinoff basically going to be exactly the same as the 'main' series?

This will be interesting imo. In TWD (including the pilot) we see the world where the living have a slight understanding of the events, learning more. I wonder if we will see ppl at the onset of the outbreak or if shit has already hit the fan.

how long will it take others to believe? Sure we'll see countless 'cushion pin walkers.' This along with the Strain, true detectives and Hannibal Will equal a bloody summer.

Please tell me this show is not going to be a 16 episode seasons?? Maybe it s a good sign they picked it up for two seasons, maybe thats all the time it takes to catch up to when Rick woke up timeline.

I love TWD but I don't really have high hopes for this show either. I wish this spin-off's timeline was connected to Rick and Co's timeline, it would've been cool for them to meet up or something if it was set in Georgia too.

TWD didn't really get going until Seasons 3 and 4 when our heroes finally became adept at fighting zombies and quit acting like idiots all the time. Now we're going to get a new series about..people not being adept at fighting zombies and acting like idiots all the time? Great.

I like the idea of a spin-off, especially if they work the story toward a grand finale where the cast from the spin-off meets with the cast from the current show at the end.

Also, would be cool to see a spin-off somewhere other than the US? Middle East, Europe, South America....

This is seriously not needed. The show is great as an individual series and the long breaks between seasons makes fans want it more. Having a another zombie show in between will slow down its momentum. AMC is hoping this is a hit to get more ad revenue but it will hurt the main show in the long run.

"we really haven't scratched the surface yet when it comes to The Walking Dead."

5 seasons and you haven't scratched the surface... Better get to work then cause you're behind big time. Also, Season 2 of TWD should not have existed and should be summed up into 3 episodes. Everytime I have someone walk up and ask me if they should start watching. I reply, "Absolutely, just skip season 2."
