THE WALKING DEAD Producers Share An Update On Where Things Stand With RICK GRIMES Movie

The Walking Dead no longer breaks ratings records, but a Rick Grimes movie remains in the works, and we now have an update on where things stand with the spinoff courtesy of the producers...

The Walking Dead was once one of the biggest TV shows on the planet, but the interest of fans started to wane, and while it still does respectable numbers, it's hard to say whether plans for a big screen spinoff revolving around Rick Grimes will prove to be a box office hit. Production has been paused due to COVID-19, of course, so where do things currently stand with the movie?

"We're coming along in a big way. We're just in this particular space where we have [to wait]," the Skybound Entertainment co-founder David Alpert said during a virtual Skybound Xpo panel (via ComicBook.com). "We can't shoot right now, so that's just the big thing holding us back."

"We are desperate to get back into production, and get everything going," he continued, "but we have something really exciting, really unique, really different, and can't wait to get it going. We just have to wait for it to be safe."

As you might expect, The Walking Dead comic book writer and TV series producer Robert Kirkman is also heavily involved in the project, and he promised fans tuning in that they remain hard at work on continuing Rick's story. "There's tons of stuff going on behind the scenes. I don't want anyone to think that we're just kind of waiting around for this pandemic to end."

"I would say that, if anything, the pandemic is going to make a lot of movies better. I think the Rick Grimes movie chief among them, just because we're getting a lot more time to cook this thing and make sure it's perfect. But when things do quiet down, you guys are going to hear a ton more about this movie," Kirkman concluded.

This is definitely a positive update, and this week's Comic-Con@Home is expected to deliver updates on both The Walking Dead's return and season ten premiere date. With that in mind, it's highly likely we could get some more intel on where things stand with this Rick Grimes movie during that event.

Stay tuned!

This movie happening still baffles me

I'm looking forward to it but c'mon. The pandemic will likely negatively effect this. How are you gonna have a hoard of zombies if there are no crowds allowed?

@Nightwing1015 - ...hence why they cant shoot right now. Unless you're saying this is reason enough to just cancel it entirely, which is ridiculous.

@Origame - No I'm not saying that at all. What I'm saying is that rule is unlikely to change in the near future. So potentially this would delay the film for a long time.

Because even when production returns, there will be many rules that stick around about what you can and cannot shoot. Rules which will make the final product worse in the case of a zombie movie.

@Nightwing1015 - they'll probably 'Agent Smith' this thing ala Matrix 2. Or maybe World War Z is a better reference. Either way, if they cgi them it wouldn't be good.

@Nightwing1015 - i mean, there are alternatives. Cgi, different filming areas that are open, etc.

@Origame - Yeah CG is an option. Don't know how expensive that'd be though. Maybe they'd go over budget IDK

@Nightwing1015 - its cheaper than hiring a bunch of extras and putting them in make up. Bear in mind that one extra will cost about $100 per day (i was an extra so im saying all this from experience). And a horde of zombies would require about 50 to 100 extras. Thats about 50,000 to 100,000 per day in cost, ignoring the obvious cost in makeup. And something like this could potentially take a month to get all the necessary shots with the horde, so thats well over a million.

With cg, you really only need a handful of zombies, and its basically just hiring a guy to copy/paste them multiple times.

@Origame - Yeah I guess that makes sense. Maybe they already use a lot of CGI on Walking Dead already, who knows.

What were you an extra in anyway? Sounds cool. I heard that extras need to be members of the actors guild of America just to take part in something.

@Nightwing1015 - manhunt deadly games. I got to hang out with Cameron britton. It was sweet. And no, i didnt have to sign up for anything with sag.

@Nightwing1015 - they could film some of the rioters?
BlueTheRaptor
BlueTheRaptor - 7/19/2020, 9:58 PM
@Origame - um, that's $5,000 and £10,000.. . CGI on that scale for a movie, by a team would 100% be more expensive than using extra and makeup.

@BlueTheRaptor - the walking dead literally did this in season 2, the one infamous for having a small budget per episode.

I lasted longer than a lot of others, basically til the end of 2018, in ‘19 when the other half of the season started, I was like, these people suck. All they went through together and they don’t trust each other, just time jumps and mistrust... alright fine, I guess I understand why people hated how Janitor Poopatine returned, ya happy?

Geeze, they sound like Trump anytime they're asked about this.. "We've got people looking at things. They're finding some very interesting things. You'll be hearing about it really soon. Big things. Really BIGLY things are coming. Some tremendous things you won't believe."

I hope this movie doesn't feature any "ghosts" or hallucinations. I hate when TWD does this. It's so cheap.

This The Walking Dead Movie is one movie I'm really anticipating, can't wait to see how different it will be in scale and visual scope from the shows.

I'm going to have to call his bluff on that. A movie on a franchise that is consistently losing steam and ratings? I mean, MAYBE if it was directly after the Rick episode maybe...but now even guys like me wouldn't tune in cause I haven't seen the show in so long.

At BEST this is a made-for-AMC-type movie. At worst he's a liar.
