LUCIFER Season 6 Possibly In Jeopardy Due To Tom Ellis Contract Dispute

While it seemed like Netflix was on the verge of renewing Lucifer for a sixth season a few weeks back, it looks like a contract dispute with star Tom Ellis has put a possible renewal in jeopardy.

While it seemed as though talks for a sixth season renewal of Lucifer were on the one-yard line a few weeks back, TV Line is now reporting that negotiations between star Tom Ellis and Warner Bros. Television have suddenly broken down, with the leading man allegedly rejecting the studio's latest offer.

It was previously reported that Ellis had already finalized a deal for season six, so depending on the circumstances behind this latest development, there is a possibility he could be in breach of contract if he chooses not to honor his existing deal.

According to their sources, Warner Bros. TV has made multiple efforts to sweeten the pot for Ellis, but it looks like they've finally reached their tipping point. An insider said, "Everyone wants Tom to be happy, but there's a limit, and it's been reached.

Despite the current controversy, it seems more likely than not that this situation with Ellis will ultimately be resolved as co-showrunners Ildy Modrovich and Joe Henderson have already closed their deals and the entire supporting cast is also expected to have their options picked up, although that is dependent on first closing a deal with Ellis.

It just now remains to be seen which side will concede first.

Meanwhile, Lucifer is slated to return for its fifth (and potentially final) season this summer.

Good, they planned out an ending for season 5 since they thought thats where it was ending, no point in continuing. Whenever shows are forced to keep going, they always go downhill

@dracula - Yeah but it'll be annoying for fans if season 5 is left open ended or something. Every show should have a proper conclusion. Not be left incomplete because everyone though they would get another season.

@Nightwing1015 - i enjoy the show as well and hopefully season 5 has an ending if season 6 doesnt happen. Still if its time to end something and it has an ending im fine. Gotham was my favorite show and i always said 5 or 6 seasons was all they needed.

@dracula - Not good cause obviously they didnt do a real ending for season 5 if they were planning on doing season 6.

They should have just ended with 5 and been done cause now if he doesnt do it it will be just like what happened with Fox if Netflix didnt pick the show up.

@Chris827 - Well if they did change the ending to season 5 because of the season 6 talks, and season 6 doesnt happen, that sucks. Although I thought they finished season 5 before talks of season 6 started. Im sure they had some planned ending for season 5, considering it was originally announced as the final season

And I thought it was gonna be in jeopardy because of the corona virus.

Everything else is.

@marvel72 - i think only starting shows are really in jeopardy because of the virus. Assuming a show has had satisfactory viewership, its just waiting for it to be safe to start filming again. Remember, they're making bank right now with everyone at home.

I know people say this show is pretty good despite being significantly different from the comics, but I still haven't got around to giving it a look. Maybe I'll add it to the quarantine list.

@SeeingGreen - It gets repetitive. It’s enjoyable for the most part, but I wouldn’t say it’s great.

Please sign Tom Ellis to Sandman!

We need him to be Lucifer from now on.
I'd love a Season 6, obviously, but I'm way more worried about seeing anyone else in the role. It has to be Tom Ellis.

@GwenLantern - This Lucifer is absolutely nothing like the one who showed up in Gaiman's Sandman, haha. Especially for season 1, you need someone really androgynous for the part.

GwenLantern - 4/19/2020, 4:46 AM
@tmp3 - Oh I think he could pull it off ;)

But it is the same character and would connect the Sandman series to the overall TV/Movie multiverse. As it should.

@tmp3 - In his very, very first appearance he was modelled after David Bowie, but it soon changed when Kelley Jones designed the character. Definitely more in Tom Ellis' wheelhouse.

@GwenLantern - Yeah, but season 1 is based on Preludes and Nocturnes. And we don't need Sandman to connect to anything outside of that JL Dark project at HBO Max, but even then you could write out Constantine and change how Morpheus finds the bag of sand.
GwenLantern
GwenLantern - 4/19/2020, 9:03 AM
@tmp3 - - Ooh, they better not. I mean they could write him out and replace him with someone else, but they could just as easily not do.

Also, it gives all the Lady Constantine stuff way more meaning, later on.

@GwenLantern - It's gonna be tough though, Constantine's TV rights seem to be a joint custody between HBO Max and CW right now, and CW will more than likely lose those rights once JL Dark gets far enough into development since that's meant to be a "big investment" from the streamer. Would be hard to get a third Constantine in there. Maybe JL Dark and Sandman could share one. Dan Stevens would be a great choice.

They’ll drop the season before bending to his deal. The harsh reality here is that Tom Ellis was relatively unknown (outside of the UK at least) prior to jumping on as Lucifer. If anything, he owes a bit of a debt to this show and should show up for season 6 as a bit of a thank you and fan service. It would help his career. Otherwise, coming out of this, he could be perceived as too expensive or hard to work with. All that being said, we don’t know the details of what’s going on and it could be a case of Netflix trying to drastically change his original show contract and screw him tremendously. Either way, fingers crossed it works out for season six.

As I heard it Ellis has a contract that they are sweetening but he is now having second thoughts. What ever happened to honoring your commitments. They aren't trying to screw him over, they just want him to honor his commitment to the contract he already signed. He may regret having signed it, but it is too late for regret. And they have improved the deal, so just sign and do a 6th and final season, and remain open to returning to the role in some capacity in the future.

Seeing as how it’s Netflix couldn’t they just sit on it until timing lines up like they do with everything else? They routinely work around stars/creators other obligations. It’s not like they have to adhere to a season type of schedule like broadcast TV does.
Kozmik
Kozmik - 4/19/2020, 2:12 PM
@Deklipz - No, because people aren't going to sit and wait for whomever to sign on the dotted line. People gotta make a living so if Ellis dicks around–as I've said I don't particularly care because I don't think the show is particularly interesting–then the cast both behind and in front of the camera are going to go to the four winds.

@Deklipz - That's like saying to you "hey, do you mind not working and not getting paid, while your one coworker is waiting to see if he can get more money?"

In this case, Netflix is not the issue.
Deklipz
Deklipz - 4/21/2020, 5:04 PM
@Kozmik - Not saying they would have everyone else sit around and wait. They could easily schedule it later out based on everyone's availability like they do with literally every other show they do.
