While the odds were stacked against The Suicide Squad when it was released last August, the movie received an overwhelmingly positive response from fans and critics alike. The decision to have the movie debut on HBO Max the same day it arrived in theaters hurt its box office chances, as did a title and marketing campaign that left moviegoers confused over whether this was a reboot or sequel.
Grossing just $167.4 million on a reported $185 million budget, you'd think that would be the last we'd see of Task Force X. However, a spinoff TV series, Peacemaker, arrives on HBO Max later this week starring John Cena and written and directed by James Gunn. Reviews have been similarly positive (you can read ours by clicking here), and it seems there's more to come from the director.
Asked if he's involved with any future DC projects, the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director told Collider, "You know, we're stepping forward. It keeps happening. We'll see what's happening, and I'll know what's happening very shortly. I dealt with it last night and this morning." Pushed on whether that's a movie or TV series, Gunn responded: "It's TV. There you go."
We'd bet on this being the filmmaker's next project once work on the GOTG threequel concludes, and with Peacemaker season 2 not yet announced, chances are it's a separate show altogether.
While Gunn could explore a completely different part of the DC Extended Universe, many fans will no doubt be hoping another character from The Suicide Squad - like Bloodsport or Ratcatcher 2 - will be the subject of this mysterious series. Alas, we're going to have to wait and see for the time being.
