Though he's probably the last character you'd expect to be open-minded about his sexuality, Peacemaker writer/director James Gunn has now confirmed that Christopher Smith (John Cena) is indeed bisexual.
Early on in the season, Smith is seen lying in bed after (presumably) having a threesome with Vigilante and the woman he held hostage in her apartment in the previous episode. While there was nothing to say that Chris and Vig definitely got it on, a scene from episode 7, "Stop Dragon my Heart Around," is far less ambiguous.
When Smith is holding his father at gunpoint, the despicable White Dragon berates his son as a failure, telling him he always knew he was "unclean" because he "slept with the whores of polluted blood, and men." Some seemed to feel this may simply have been Auggie trying to push Chris's buttons, but Gunn has now set the record straight.
"It was me and John talking about who he is," the filmmaker tells Total Film. "Peacemaker is a hypersexual guy and that has led him to be a sexual omnivore in a lot of ways."
"I think it's interesting because Adebayo is so traditionally liberal in so many ways, but sexually Adebayo is incredibly conservative," Gunn continued. "I mean, she's married to one woman. They have a monogamous lifestyle. And Peacemaker sexually is incredibly liberal. He’s a hedonist. That it’s just who the guy is."
It'll be interesting to see if Smith's sexuality is explored any further in season 2. For now, you can check out Peacemaker's first run on HBO Max in The US and Sky TV or NOW in The UK and Ireland.
