PEACEMAKER: James Gunn Shares First Poster For THE SUICIDE SQUAD Spinoff Ahead Of DC FanDome

Earlier today, the full line-up for the second DC FanDome was officially announced, and we now have confirmation that the first footage from Peacemaker will screen during the online event. In anticipation, James Gunn has taken to Instagram to share a promo poster for The Suicide Squad spinoff, which will see John Cena reprise the role of unhinged vigilante Christopher Smith.

Clearly, Peacemaker (or should that be "Pissmaker"?) is still the same obnoxious asshole we were introduced to in The Suicide Squad. Gunn has confirmed that the series will humanise the character to some extent, however.

Check out the poster below.

Spoilers for The Suicide Squad follow.

Towards the end of the movie, Bloodsport (Idris Elba) shot Peacemaker in the throat as he was about to execute Ratcatcher II (Daniela Melchoir). At that point, we all assumed this Peacemaker show would be a prequel, but the post-credits scene revealed that Smith had survived, and will soon be needed to help Amanda Waller's people "save the f*cking world."

Peacemaker will also star Danielle Brooks, Steve Agee, Jennifer Holland, Chris Conrad, Robert Patrick and Chukwudi Iwuji. Specific plot details are still under wraps, but we do know that the series will explore the origins of Cena's titular DC Comics villain/antihero, a man who believes in peace at any cost, no matter how many people he has to kill to get it.

Gunn is writing and directing the show, which was ordered to series last September. No official premiere date has been announced, but Peacemaker is expected to hit HBO Max next January.

Well Peacemaker is the inspiration for the Comedian in Alan Moore's Watchmen.

Think they jumped the gun on giving this guy the TV show. They should've waited after the movie was released and whatnot, saw who fans really gravitated towards to, and then go, "OK, we'll make a show about blank."

Because, correct me if I'm wrong, but Peacemaker was not THE fan favorite in this movie lol

@KWilly - you're acting like peacemaker wasn't very popular anyway. Don't get me wrong, characters like king shark are definitely more popular, but it's not like there isn't interest with fans for more peacemaker. Plus there's more room for a story here than with the other more popular characters, excluding harley of course.

@KWilly - If they waited until the fan favorites emerged then the show would be about Sebastian and Polka-Dot-Cat.

@KWilly - I’d much rather have a Rick Flagg show.

@Reeds2Much - I don't think it had anything to do with popularity, and more to do with it being an unknown character. The majority of the people have no idea who Peacemaker is. John Cena's star is also on the rise, and he already comes with a fan base in the demographic for CBMs. There will be SFX, but not like there would be for Bloodsport, King Shark, Polka Dot Man or Ratcatcher II with her legion of rats. His costume is cheap as hell. No nano tech to form his helmet every time he goes into battle. So they get to save money.

@BlackConvoy - I think Gunn is low-key channeling Watchmen a bit. He's got a Charlton character in Peacemaker in TSS as well as a giant Squid dropping on an unsuspecting population.
On top of that, Gunn said Peacemaker will connect to other corners of the DCEU and has another Charlton character appearing in the show, i.e. Judomaster.
Then take into account Peacemaker's connection (something of a mentor) with Blue Beetle (Jaime), another Charlton character.

I wouldn't be surprised if Gunn announced he's taking on the Question and Captain Atom next.

He had some good lines, but I don’t think he was anyone’s favorite character by the time the credits rolled.

I don't think Peacemaker was THE standout, but he was arguably the character that would benefit most from his own series. Cena did a great job so I'm looking forward to seeing more. Plus, Gunn strongly hinted that another member of Task Force X will show up. My guess is he'll go see Ratcatcher to try to make amends.
