The first trailer for Peacemaker is set to debut during DC FanDome next month, but some members of the press were given the opportunity to watch it early during last night's Television Critics Association, and a breakdown has now been shared online.

Per THR, the footage begins with "Christopher Smith (John Cena) in the hospital following the events of The Suicide Squad. He explains to the orderly that he’s supposed to be in jail for 'superhero shit,' and says he’s Peacemaker. The orderly laughs, insisting there’s no superhero named Peacemaker. There are also glimpses of Robert Patrick as Peacemaker’s disapproving father (it involves a bald eagle) and also some of the onscreen chemistry between Peacemaker and his handlers, including Jennifer Holland’s Squad character, Emilia Harcourt. 'Just because you’re handsome doesn’t mean you’re not a piece of shit,' Harcourt tells Peacemaker at one point. His response? 'You think I’m handsome?'"

We know from The Suicide Squad's post-credits scene that A.R.G.U.S. wants Smith to help them "save the f*cking world," but we're still not sure what kind of threat the team will be facing. James Gunn wasn't giving anything away when it comes to plot specifics, but he did reveal why he settled on Peacemaker for his own spinoff series.

“At the end of The Suicide Squad, [Idris Elba’s] Bloodsport learns a lot. He’s a better person than he was at the beginning. A lot of the characters are much better than they were at the beginning, and Peacemaker has a lot to learn,” explained the filmmaker. “It’s that ability to learn that for me makes him a little bit more likable. His blindspots in some places are pretty terrible, and in some places are him being ignorant. I think that’s an important distinction to make as well. He is open at the same time, sometimes.”

Cena also commented on his imminent return to the role, joking that “it is definitely in my contract to lose a fight in every project I do and definitely to be in a scene with a CGI animal.” Will we see the return of Ratcatcher 2 and Sebastian? Could he even be referring to Weasel or King Shark, perhaps? Maybe Smith will be given a pet sidekick of his own!

Peacemaker will also star Danielle Brooks, Steve Agee, Chris Conrad, and Chukwudi Iwuji. Specific plot details are still under wraps, but we do know that the series will explore the origins of Cena's titular DC Comics villain/antihero, a man who believes in peace at any cost, no matter how many people he has to kill to get it.

Gunn is writing and directing the show, which was ordered to series last September. No official premiere date has been announced, but Peacemaker is expected to hit HBO Max next January.

I really hope Gunn knocks it out of the park with this,
wasn't too happy with TSS, maybe my expectations were too high, but I found it too basic from a plot perspective with not enough Gunn-isms to make up for that.

Especially Peacemaker was a sore spot for me. Unlikable, unfunny and kills the character you actually had a connection to.

@Blergh - I feel the same about Peacemaker. Obviously there are characters who aren’t necessarily supposed to be “like-able” in that traditional sense, but he’s not even like-able in that “root for the villain” way like a Joker, Heisenberg, or Loki for example.

He’s unfunny too, as you said.

@Blergh - damn if you thought TSS was too basic you must have hated Shang Chi then

@Blergh - and somehow you had a connection with Rick [frick]ing Flagg of all people??? We’re you high? Dude had zero character development in two separate films man.

@McMurdo - how very confrontational. But okay.

About the basic comment:
TSS followed a basic get from point A to point B and destroy object C structure seen in many 80s action movies (which was certainly intentional).
Something that might trigger the nostalgic vein for others but not for me in particular.
Had the journey along the way been filled with more enticing material I would have ignored that but the journey to B was consisting of a completely forced Harley sequence that made the movie feel like a WB checklist of Harley moments to drive her home as the new franchise lead and rather uninteresting stops along the way. The second act dragged and wasn't well written.
The finale was fun and full of action but nevertheless didn't make up for the middle.

As for Shang-Chi: basic? No. Matter of fact the film wasn't even a classic three act script but rather a five act story.
Act 1: contextualizing the past
Act 2: establishing main characters and establishing the primary conflict
Act 3: recontextualization of the plot
Act 4: escalating the conflict and bringing the characters towards the final setting
Act 5: final confrontation and tying up loose ends

You can critique the film for all you want but the story structure was not basic. That might be seen as a strength or weak point depending on your enjoyment of the finished product.

Ultimately I sense that you're up for fighting in the comments, I don't want that.
So I'll gladly agree to disagree. You loved TSS I merely enjoyed it less than I thought I would.

@Blergh - villain falls in love while trying to enter magical realm for sake of attaining more power. Falls in love with woman who isn’t a psycho because plot. Main char hates dad/villain runs away to America. Meanwhile, dick dad is still a dick. There are two main chars because Xialing and Awkwafina got zero actual character development nor did they have any true arcs within this story. Sister was treated like shit too but she has vagina so she learned how to do cool shit on her own, that’s the extent of Xialings character development. Or lack there of. Main char gets power up by learning moms cool skills from aunt after a single spat because plot. Dick dad wants to open a cave to save his dead wife and tries to kill son in process. Dad loses.

That’s Shang Chi. I have zero desire to fight with you regarding everything I just ask that we not delude ourselves so that we can be honest about the films we are discussing. Shang Chi is as simple, if not more simple plot wise and ESPECIALLY characterization-wise as TSS, and Harleys awesome action sequence is no more out of place or forced than a cgi shit show Soul Sucking monster that legitimately appears out of thin air (er, a cave) in the final act of Shang Chi.

Can't wait for this show. Maybe I love the fact he rubs people the wrong way because he killed their favorite character more than I am excited about the show itself. 🥴
