THE FLASH: John Wesley Shipp's Jay Garrick Initially Believes Savitar Is A Speed Force Myth

It's not easy being The Flash right now. Not only did the hero alter his reality by time-travelling, but those same antics, as it turns out, were the catalyst for last week's invasion by the alien Dominators. Coupled with the fact that  there's an all-powerful Speed Force God named Savitar ready to eradicate him, an overwhelmed Barry will turn to Jay Garrick in tonight's mid season finale. However, according to actor John Wesley Shipp, Jay initially believes Savitar to be a myth.

“Well, to set it up, Jay’s not sure that Savitar even exists. He’s a Speed Force myth and — as an unseen, unknown fear — is even bigger than a fear that you know,” Shipp explained to CBR. “First of all, Jay is surprised — maybe even a little miffed — that Savitar showed himself to Barry! I’ve known him as a myth my whole life, me being Jay, and when I come up against him, I know that Jay knows that Barry alone and Jay alone cannot defeat or have a chance against Savitar. But, if we go up against him together, we have a shot.”

With Jay having dropped some hints about his mistakes earlier in the season when admonishing Barry, some have wondered if Jay's past will be explored a little further. Shipp promised that we'll be seeing a lot more of Jay in the back half of season 3, where we just might get some more backstory. “Well, those hints keep being dropped. I mean, it’s very interesting to me, and I’m going to figure in more prominently in the second half of the season than the first. You just asked one of my questions, because nothing is wasted, I think we’ve seen in this show. So anytime something like that is dropped — and there’s more of it [in the mid season finale] — there are more."

How do you think the two Flashes will fare against Savitar? Be sure to tune in tonight to find out!

BARRY SEEKS HELP FROM JAY GARRICK — With Alchemy and Savitar still looming threats, Barry (Grant Gustin) is unable to focus on the Christmas holiday, and especially his relationship with Iris (Candice Patton). Determined to stop Savitar, Barry goes to Earth-3 to get advice from Jay Garrick (guest star John Wesley Shipp). Wally (Keiynan Lonsdale) wants to help Barry fight Savitar and reveals that he’s been training with H.R. (Tom Cavanagh), which doesn’t go over well with Barry. As Cisco (Carlos Valdes) faces his first Christmas without his brother Dante (guest star Nicholas Gonzalez), old wounds are reopened.

My DCCWU Checklist so far This Season:

☑ Supergirl 1-2, Flash 1-7, Legends 1-5(ish), Arrow 1-3(ish)

⬜ Everything after that.

I do appreciate the level of commitment and content, even if I find a lot of it a slog. Those "ish"'s are me getting bored and doing something else mid-episode of Arrow and falling asleep in Legends. I haven't even bothered to keep up with Gotham this year.

If there was something like this when I was a young teenager, though, I'm sure I'd eat it up.

Really wish Barry was able to put up an ounce of a fight instead of just being curbstomped every single time.

Oh, Matt. It looks like you've put a picture of Optimus Prime from the new Transformers movie on this article by mistake. May want to fix that.

@Spock0Clock - This would be funnier if 100 people hadn't already made this joke. I expect better from you....you're slipping.

@MattBellissimo - How about this: "Man, they've really upped their animation quality on Aquateen Hunger Force! The new Turkatron looks badass."

(I feel like that's too obscure and not quite on the nose enough. I'm not the first one to compare him to Prime because he just genuinely looks like Bay's Prime.)
