THE FLASH Series Finale Promo Reveals Cobalt Blue; Carlos Valdes Reveals Reason He Didn't Return As Cisco

In a new minute-long promo for The Flash's upcoming series finale, Cobalt Blue takes aim at Barry Allen in what promises to be an epic showdown. Carlos Valdes, meanwhile, reveals why he won't be in the episode.

The Flash's ninth and final season has been incredibly star-studded, but there's one fan-favourite classic cast member we haven't seen.

Despite being a mainstay of The CW series during its first seven years on the network, Carlos Valdes has not reprised his role as Cisco Ramon/Vibe and won't appear in next week's series finale. Now, the actor has opened up on what stopped him from being able to bid farewell to The Flash

"I did consider it," he recently told Entertainment Weekly of a possible return. "Honestly, there was no way to make it happen with regards to my schedule and just all the different creative ventures and life circumstances that I was trying to juggle at that time."

This was a result of Valdes shooting Hulu's Up Here at the same time The Flash was being shot. As you might imagine, the actor was more than a little disappointed.

"I couldn't really make it work, which was really heartbreaking to me because I thought, if I decided to step away from the show, at the very least I have to be there for the finale to round this thing out and to really honor the full circle-ness of it," he added. "It was really heartbreaking to not be able to make it work."

After first debuting in an episode of Arrow, Cisco would go on to be a huge part of the series before bidding farewell to the role halfway through season 7. The last time we saw him was when he officiated the West-Allen vow renewal in the finale, with it since explained that he's now living in Star City with his girlfriend.

We also have an extended promo for Wednesday's finale and, as you'll see below, Eddie Thawne has undergone a villainous transformation into Blue Cobalt! He won't be alone in gunning for the Fastest Man Alive either, as Reverse-Flash, Zoom, and Savitar have also returned to destroy Barry Allen.

Shame he can’t return but his reasoning is fair and it sounds honest.

I'm getting really tired of comic book/superhero adaptations but it's hard for me to see this go. It's been nearly a decade. One of the best shows of the genre, despite some flaws.

He was the heart of the show. They tried to bring in other characters to fill the Cisco-shaped void but they never could. If they wanted to do "Team Flash" stuff, it would never beat the original trio of Barry, Caitlyn, and Cisco.

How does this look worse and cheesier than an episode of Smallville from 20 years ago?

@RafaelTorres - This won't have a cloud smoke-esque looking Darskeid for starters and the major heavy hitters are all wearing actual costumes so it's not the same at all.

No Hartley Sawyer?

So much for redemption and second chances……

@LilJimmy - I lost all respect for Grant Gustin, and everyone else involved with the TV series The Flash when they set out to destroy the life of Hartley Sawyer because of some old social media posts. Grant Gustin used it as an opportunity to really get himself over with leftist Hollywood personally denounced Sawyer. He hasn't acted since. They murdered his life just so they could fit in better with the woke crowd. Hartley Sawyer's tweets are nothing compared to the tweets of James Gunn and others. But Sawyer was much easier to destroy and so it was a very too good to pass up opportunity for Gustin and others involved with CW's The Flash. So they took it, did their little moral grandstanding play, killed his career, got to fit in with the popular crowd.

@PartyKiller - It’s a recurring part on a syndicated show. Millions of actors would kill for that part. There are no handouts in these situations. Either you’re close to perfect socially or you’re fired. Period. The network can’t afford to be associated with racism and neither can his costars. And not being a racist isn’t trying to “fit in” either it’s being normal human being.

@soleavenger - It's a good thing that not every actor/actress has their past dug up because it is possible that none of them would have jobs based on today's culture.

@PartyKiller - "They set out to destroy"? "Murdered"? You're really delusional and that's saying something.

WBTV made the call to fire him. It sucks, but we've all moved on. Apparently, you haven't.

@NinnesMBC - While it's true that WB made the call to fire him they did effectively kill his career. So far Hartley hasn't made any acting or public appearances since he got fired from the show. What's even worse is how he could be treated as expendable. I've read that Candice Patton has also made some horrible tweets in the past but WB didn't take any action against her. What worries me the most is the fact that nobody has heard from Hartley since.
PartyKiller
PartyKiller - 5/22/2023, 1:05 PM
@soleavenger - He was fired over old tweets. But let me guess you were all against James Gunn being fired for old tweets that were far far worse than Sawyers, am I right? After he's fired Grant Gustin piles it on. It was not going to harm Grant gustin's Career that he had worked with some guy that had made some Politically Incorrect Tweets in the past. But like so many others, Gustin wanted to show the powers that be that he was playing along cooperating in their game. He seized the moment. He turned on a former teammate who was already down. His remarks were made for two reasons; to be accepted by the popular crowd while destroying someone's career for being imperfect.
PartyKiller
PartyKiller - 5/22/2023, 1:13 PM
@NinnesMBC - They did set out to destroy him. He was given absolutely no chance whatsoever to explain himself or to apologize. And a big problem with this sort of thing this sort of morality play by people like Gustin, is Gustin can publicly cast stones but can he prove that he's never said anything whatsoever that could be seen as racist or sexist or anything else that Sawyer was accused of? Sawyer was down and Gustin used the moment to assert himself as morally Superior. As he who is without sin who can judge others. Sawyer didn't work for Gustin and Gustin would not be harmed in any way by Sawyer's old tweets. There was only one motivation for Gustin to pile on to Sawyer as he did and that was to promote himself as Worthy of the moral grandstanding group that gets up every day looking hard through all the news and the quotes from the previous day hoping to find something that they can use to condemn someone and feel like they're a moral crusader and to tweet they're outrage at someone else's sins as if they are sinless. Gustin wanted to join the mob he wanted to be a part of it and he succeeded. Any helped to murder someone's career over old tweets. And you think it's delusional for someone to call Guston out over his obvious intent? It doesn't work that way. Hartley Sawyer was judged over his old tweets and Grant Gustin is damn well going to be judged for his part in seeking to destroy someone's life.

Lemme guess. End fight scene takes place in an abandoned clean and well lit warehouse with generic empty stacked cardboard boxes or well lit and clean public park with no police or military present. Oh At night as well. Even though the fate of the world hangs in the balance. So cheesy.

@GarthRanzz - They have been pretty good. But last episodes future stuff was dumb! 2049 so like Cecile shoukd be like 75 but is still running around as a superhero? Allegra & Chester looked great for people in their 50's

@kider2 - You shouldn't take stuff like that too seriously. It's a show based on comics. All of them could have gotten hit with some age regression tech or whatever. Anything is possible in these worlds. Nothing is too crazy. They did the same thing before in the Reverse-Flashpoint Arc so I don't know why it's an issue now.

It sucks Carlos couldn't make it, but at least he really tried to be there. Sometimes these kind of things just happen.

Even Jordan Fisher's been too busy since last year while they started shooting S9 because he booked a role in Broadway for Sweeney Todd so getting Impulse here doesn't seem like it was ever gonna be possible because his play premiered just around when they were filming this final episode. It would have been very interesting to see Bart also reacting to seeing Eddie in 2049 and wondering around lost in the Flash Museum and probably even clashing with his sister Nora about what to do with him after they got along nicely in 2013 in 8x06.

Only to now have to face against him as Cobalt Blue. The set up from back then makes now so much sense as well as the emotional turmoil they would feel to now have to fight him to preserve their dad's legacy, protect their mom and heck protect themselves too, but alas, scheduling conflicts can be a really pain.

Still excited to see how this showdown goes down. I have really enjoyed Rick Cosnett digging his teeth in this arc in his portrayal of how Eddie came to realize that half of his noble sacrifice was in vain and there's nothing that he can do to escape from these "blues", the melancholy of his previous life and the untainable yearning for Iris that now is hurting him unless he's able to turn back the clock somehow to get vestiges of his old life back that he considers he is owed to from Flash.

If Bloodwork's adaptation was afraid of death and his goal was to find the way to conquer and defeat it then this modern take on Cobalt Blue is more than just the cobalt crystal and it's radiation and the suit being half navy, it's about the emotional state that drives Eddie to stop "the blues" that haunt him.

A really smart interpretation of Cobalt Blue. And his suit is well adapted. 💎

And Grant's acting his ass off one last time.

Bring it! ⚡
