THE FLASH Star Candice Patton Opens Up On Dealing With Racist Abuse Minus Any Support From WB/The CW

The Flash star Candice Patton has revealed that she received little in the way of support from Warner Bros. and The CW for the racist and misogynistic abuse she faced during the show's early days...

The Flash's take on Iris West has always been somewhat divisive, primarily because many of The CW's DC TV shows struggle to tell compelling stories with their female leads.

Unfortunately, there are also many viewers who have taken aim at Candice Patton simply because her Iris is not the white-skinned redhead from the comic books. During a recent interview with The Open Up Podcast, the actor called out The CW and Warner Bros. for not doing enough to protect her from racist trolls during the show's early days.

"Now people understand how fans can be racist, especially in genre, misogynistic, all of that," Patton explained. "But at the time, it was kind of like, 'That's how fans are, but whatever.' Even with the companies I was working with, [The] CW, Warner Bros., I think that was their way of handling it."

"For me in 2014, there were no support systems. It was free-range to get abused every single day," she continued. "It's just not enough to make me your lead female and say, 'Look at us, we're so progressive, we checked the box.' It's great to be in the ocean, but I can get eaten alive out here."

Patton would go on to to say that people in Hollywood "know better now" when it comes to how actors are targeted with racist abuse, rightly pointing out that, "It's not okay to treat your talent that way, to let them go through abuse and harassment."

While it's true that there does appear to be a better understanding of the sort of abuse diverse actors face when they're cast in high-profile projects, it's done little to change those who target them. Recently, we've seen Obi-Wan Kenobi star Moses Ingram subjected to racist abuse from Star Wars "fans" who couldn't cope with a Black actor playing a member of the Sith Inquisitors.

The Flash recently wrapped up its eighth season on The CW, and is expected to end its run with a truncated season nine. Despite being the longest-running DC TV series on the network, the series has been running on fumes for a while now, unfortunately.

Social media has given voices to one's who don't have a right to open it. Of course the election 6 years ago taught the ones, it's okay to be an idiot. It's everyone else who is the enemy 🤡

@bobevanz - “taught the ones”… speaking in code? No, the previous POTUS spoke out against racism countless times. Do your research before making comments like this.

@xfactor - what behavior am I sticking up for by asking for proof? [frick]ing moron. You know proof....that thing our entire judicial system is built on..you're familiar with the concept right?

What's reprehensible is being a blind follower and just believing everything you hear with zero evidence or proof.

Hey everyone!!! I heard that xfactor likes to jerk off dogs. I'm not going to provide proof of this claim but you should just blindly believe....cause reasons.

@Toblakai - you’re defending it. Point blank. You’re literally telling people here not to believe her claims because she doesn’t have “proof. Like seriously, who the [frick] are you? Other some random racist dickhead spouting stupid bullshit. Now [frick] off kkklansman.

@xfactor - didn't defend a single thing. Asking for actual proof isn't "defending" anything....it's asking for proof.

And of course you call me a racist and a klansman with zero proof of either lol.

Sorry lil fella I expect proof when people level serious allegations

But her character sucks, so it's okay to attack her for it right?

Kidding aside, I both am and am not surprised there weren't support systems. On the one hand, stuff like this has been known years back in 2014 already, but on the other hand, it's the tv and movie business after all.

A combination of Josh’s run-on sentences, inventive word choices, and lack of neutrality make this article (and many others) hard to read. Has he ever considered having someone proof-read his shlop before publishing…?

Racism in all forms is not okay by any means.
