THE FLASH Star Grant Gustin Explains Why He's "Ready For [The Series] To Be Over"

The Flash kicked off its ninth and final season on The CW last night, and star Grant Gustin has now opened up on bidding farewell to Barry Allen and why the Fastest Man Alive will always be part of him.

In recent years, we've heard on multiple occasions that Grant Gustin was looking to move on from The Flash. With the ninth (and final) season now underway on The CW and cameras currently rolling on the last couple of episodes, it won't be too much longer until the actor is finally freed up to explore new opportunities.

Starring in a show like this one makes it nigh-on impossible to take on other acting roles, and as Gustin explained during a recent interview with E! News, "I'm ready for it to be over."

He'd quickly go on to clarify, "And that's not for any negative reason. It's like when you're getting ready to finish high school and - granted I don't know what college I'm going to after this, I might not get into college - but you're excited to wrap up and move on to the next phase of your life."

"I'm ready emotionally and my family is ready to just kind of move into the next chapter together."

Gustin, who is only 33 but has been playing the Scarlet Speedster since 2014, admitted that the way Barry Allen's story ends isn't playing heavily on his mind and never really has.

"I never had a real expectation, I've never tried to visualize how it would end after all these years," Gustin explained. "So, I have no idea what to expect from this last one, whatever script I receive in my inbox is what I'll accept as our story and then move forward with."

The end is nigh, however, and though he's keen to move on with his career, Gustin knows the role will always be part of him. "I'll get to be The Flash forever even when this ends. We couldn't have done this this long if we didn't have people supporting us as much as they had over the years, and it's really shaped who I am."

No matter what acting gigs may or may not be on the horizon, Gustin could quite easily spend the rest of his career making huge money doing signings and photo opportunities at fan conventions (in 2016, it was reported that Arrow star Stephen Amell was making $250,000 per weekend). It sounds like he has grander ambitions, though!

Where would you like to see The Flash star's career go next?

Those were pretty good responses. He's a real Stand Up Guy!

@DCfan84 - I mean he plays a superhero, can you imagine if they hired some crazy person to be the Flash?

@UncleHarm1 - Right?! No person in their right mind would make a move like that! *Cue the Screen Rant Theme*

That makes sense. He'll indeed get's to be Barry Allen I remember, and that's exactly why I want the big screen Flash to be Wally West.

@bkmeijer1 - I don't mind multiple iterations of the same character but the status quo we got with Ezra Miller just taints the characters legacy for me.

Miller has done REALLY nasty things and has Manson-esque mannerisms that make me worry for those close to him and himself.
The fact that they get to portray a character associated with being a hero with or without powers, a genuinely good person and sometimes the naive wheel in an otherwise cynical universe taints Barry for me.

Once his crimes have gotten out WB...nay DC should have pulled the breaks. They're letting a proven criminal and abuser stick in the role of someone that represents everything the performer isn't.

@Blergh - wouldn't be surprised that WB/DC saying Miller is staying on as The Flash is one of, if not the main reason Ezra is willing to go into rehab/therapy/whatever help is offered.
Blergh

@bkmeijer1 - he hid away from authorities until WB announced he'd stay on. Only AFTER that he announced he'd "seek help". I absolutely agree with you, his claim to seek out professional help is tied to WBs investment in him.

If being hunted by the law didn't scare him into seeking help, nothing will but money. In which case I don't see any type of therapy helping, I would even doubt he's seeking active therapy but a PR coach to help him hide his transgressions...god I hate the entertainment industry sometimes...

@Blergh - yeah. Still feel like Miller must have some serious dirt on WB to wrestle them into this position. Unless WB is actually benevolent and sees this as to keep Ezra off the streets, being the public menace he appears to be

@bkmeijer1 - his mom was a casting agent in the industry, so he might have come in contact with big names from an early age. I've been thinking he might have been abused by some bigwig and in return for his silence is going free.
But that's just conjecture on my part.

It's ridiculous though how he goes through his scandals without consequence to his professional career.
People got canceled and fired for less.

@Blergh - Yeah, it's hard to have a guy that is the antithesis of the Allen character playing the character. It's a mockery of the comic book hero in a way. Perhaps the Reverse Flash won afterall...

He's 200% more Flash than some other speedsters we could mention

I could see Grant Gustin as a "red shirt" and he dies infinite times in a time loop. xD

When he was cast as Barry and kind of shoehorned into a triangle between Oliver and Felicity I felt the CW would ruin Barry before he even got his own show.
But I've got to say, Grant really turned me around on him in his run as Barry.
He's charming, kind, well-meaning and portrays Barry how I always imagined him to be in live-action. It's a very rare instance of really good casting that is going to be hard to top.
While originating on Arrow (which was great but rather disloyal to Green Arrow as a character) the show truly encapsulated legacy story-telling by bringing in different universes, former actors and generally respecting the lore to a T.
While never my favorite show of the Arrowverse I have to admit that it was probably the best show and I'm sad to see that universe end.

I'm stil sour over S&L being cut from that canon for the chance of getting saved for one-more-year. That choice did a massive disservice to the integrity of the Arrowverse and will make it end on a sour note.

Chapeu to the creatives involved...even to Guggenheim (who I'd hate to see take on yet another property I care about).

note:

I would have loved to see the final season of the Flash to serve as an ending to "Batwoman" and "Legends of Tomorrow" through dedicated two-parter episodes.
It's sad that they didn't at least get the episode count they wanted to make that happen.

Now the universe will likely end with multiple open plot threads

I have been a Barry Allen Flash fan for many, many years. I watched the CW show for a couple of seasons, but lost interest due the whole "Team Flash" concept. While Grant Gustin did a great job, the premise strayed so far from the Barry Allen version introduced in the late 50's, it just was not for me. I wish Grant all the best and do appreciate his singular talent in the Flash mythos.

All the best Grant Gustin, made the role his own.

I doubt he'll become a big film star, but hope he proves me wrong

I was flipping around last night and tuned into this. I think it was at the climax just as Barry was stopping some device.

1. Why is Boomerang American and a douche?

2. I feel bad for grant gustin at this point. That show is so bad 😂

Soon he won't have to wear that bad Halloween costume again, and after another decade, maybe he can regain his self-respect which he had to stash away while working on this sh!tty CW soapfest.

I think Grant could go to do some Broadway plays, he's very talented and also knows how to dance and sing. There's nothing that he can't do.

I'll miss him seeing him in the small screen, so hopefully he won't stay away from it too much.

He's left an indeleble mark as Flash and it will be a long time until someone steps in and does a better job. When people pick up a Flash comic book, they'll hear his voice in their heads as they read Barry Allen.

Lowkey hope that James Gunn (and that idiot of Zaslav) eases up with the favoritism and realizes that there's still tons of potential in letting the Arrowverse go on through in HBO Max or other streamer service and lets Beranti do a Justice League series consisting of 6 Seasons with 13 eps, same format as the JL animated one in order to have Grant back in the roster.

He is leaving a great legacy on the character.

Run, Grant. Run!
