Last night's installment of The Flash unveiled the Red Death as Barry (Grant Gustin) and Iris (Candice Patton) learned much more about her master plan and the doom it could spell for Central City and the multiverse at large.

While Barry gets himself captured by the Red Death, Iris gets an unexpected visit from the previously presumed missing Ryan Wilder (Javicia Leslie), who promptly explains her disappearance. When Iris gets suspicious and calls her out, this Ryan finally comes clean about being an evil doppelgänger that is currently trapped in their timeline.

It's revealed that no one is in the Red Death armor and that Ryan is remotely controlling everything. Her speed is technically fake and so she needs Barry to fuel the Cosmic Treadmill to get her back home, but it would also kill Barry in the process, which is not good.

Team Flash does manage to rescue Barry, but not before his speed is drained, and now, it looks like they're going to have to get creative to take her down before it's too late for them all.

Check out the new promo for episode five, titled "The Mask of the Red Death, Part Two," below:

The main cast of The Flash season nine features Grant Gustin ("Barry Allen/The Flash"), Candice Patton ("Iris West-Allen"), Danielle Panabaker ("Dr. Caitlin Snow"), Danielle Nicolet ("Cecile Horton"), Kayla Compton ("Allegra Garcia"), Brandon McKnight ("Chester P. Runk"), and Jon Cor ("Mark Blaine/Chillblaine").

"The Mask of the Red Death, Part Two" - (8:00-9:00 p.m. ET) (TV-PG, LV) (HDTV)

THE ERA OF THE RED DEATH - As the Red Death wreaks havoc on Central City, Barry (Grant Gustin) and Iris (Candice Patton) come up with a plan and turn to Cecile (Danielle Nicolet) for help. Barry is faced with what he thinks was his greatest mistake, and the Red Death's greatest success. Khione (Danielle Panabaker) wants to help Team Flash, but Barry can't risk losing her. Joe (Jesse L. Martin) gives Barry a very much needed pep talk. Rachel Talalay directed the episode with story by Jonathan Butler and teleplay by Dan Fisk (#905). Original airdate 3/8/2023.

Someday I’ll watch the rest of the series but this article points out one of the things that always troubled me about this show. “Team Flash manages to rescue Barry.” The Flash is an immensely powerful character but often has to be rescued by “Team Flash.” Admittedly, I gave up watching several years ago on season two. Maybe there has not been as much of this as there was in season one. I enjoyed the supporting cast but just think that Barry has to rely on them for help for too much.

They shouldn’t have cast Javicia Leslie as Red Death, she is absolutely terrible in the role, easily the worst Big Bad the show has ever had.
