SANDMAN Writer Neil Gaiman Updates On Netflix Adaptation; Teases Major Changes To The Comic

Production on Netflix's adaptation of Neil Gaiman's acclaimed DC vertigo comic series The Sandman was originally scheduled for last month, but with the COVID-19 pandemic still causing mass delays, that obviously never happened. Updates have been few and far between since the show was officially announced last year, but Gaiman has now given fans a bit more to go on during a virtual press roundtable.

Recent character breakdowns suggested the adaptation would be making some pretty major alterations to the source material, and Gaiman now seems to have confirmed as much while revealing that the Netflix show will update the story and characters for the 21st century.

"Okay, it is 2020, let's say that I was doing Sandman starting in 2020, what would we do? How would we change things? What gender would this character be? Who would this person be? What would be happening?"

Gaiman also touched on why so many previous attempts to adapt his classic tale never came to fruition.

"People have tried making movies and TV adaptations for 30 years, and actively tried making them for 25 years, and they've never worked," the writer continued. "And they never worked because of all the special effects and what would be needed to do the special effects. They never worked because you were making something that was adult. People would write Sandman movie scripts, and they go, 'But it's an R-rated movie, and we can't have $100 million R-rated movies.' So, that wouldn't happen. You needed to get to a world in which long-form storytelling is an advantage rather than a disadvantage. And the fact that we have seventy-five issues of Sandman plus -- essentially, 13 full books -- worth of material, is a really good thing. It's not a drawback."

Gaiman went on to reveal that he's seen some of the production designs for Lucifer's castle and the gates of Hell, and wishes he could show everyone how well everything is coming together.

For the time being, Morpheus fans will be able to get their fix when The Sandman Audible Drama hits the Dreaming on July 15.

Yeah, we knew it was in present day from when it was announced so this isn't really a big shocker. I hope they don't soften Morpheus' edges though, he was a bit of a selfish ass in the comics and that's part of what made him so dynamic as a character.
Them adapting the gates of hell sounds very exciting though. Hope we get some casting soon.

Adaptations with mild changes are good so it isn't a predictable cut and paste job. Complete reinventions with major changes to source material really piss me off.

If your character would be very different, "major changes," just because of the 'year' I have to question whether the character is the priority at all, or is the trendiness and zeitgeist your real priority here?

Can't wait. It really needs to unfold in an episodic fashion because any one of The Endless could power a separate origin movie by themselves.

I remain curious of how this will end up looking, will be my first time being exposed to it.

I just hope they don't make another dumb cop procedural-type of adaptation, because Lucifer was ruined enough, and that Helstrom thing is already looking like shit.

@NewAtrocitus3 - Yes, but they should still keep Tom Ellis (who just signed to Netflix) as Lucifer, in Sandman, for continuity's sake.
(If Netflix's Sandman is part of the multiverse, then Lucifer should be the same Lucifer, only earlier)
Besides, the fans would not like it if they got anybody else.

The Sandman series itself is an absolute masterpiece.Having to wait a month for the next issue in this series made it so special, but it’s timeless.Brilliant.For those who haven’t read it in full,go hit your local library, they prob have it.And even when it’s slow, stick it out.The payoffs are worth it!

Okay first of all "teases" major changes?!

More like threatens. Major changes to Sandman = not good.

Second of all, these do not sound at all like "major changes", just like the first article that presumed the series would deviate from the books because the Corinthian was the big bad of the first season.
Like they can't adapt both of the first two books in the first season.

In fact since Gaiman has just mentioned Lucifer's castle and the gates of Hell, it does indeed sound like they will be adapting both the first and second books.

And finally, regarding changing genders et. al, I feel like the original Sandman books were pretty progressive and modern and actually quite ahead of their time to begin with. What needs changing?
