THE SANDMAN Reportedly Casting Hades, Persephone And Eurydice For Season 2

Now that the WGA strike is at an end, production can resume for the second season of The Sandman, and we're hearing that casting is currently underway for three key characters from the comic.

Cameras began rolling on the second season of The Sandman back in June, but production was forced to halt when the strikes commenced. While filming likely won't resume until the SAG-AFTRA strikes comes to an end, it seems the resolution of the WGA strike has allowed Neil Gaiman and co. to continue working on the show.

According to What's On Netflix, casting is currently underway for the roles of Hades, Persephone and Eurydice. This along with what we saw in some recent set photos would seem to leave little doubt that the second season will cover "The Song of Orpheus" in addition to "Season of Mists" and "Brief Lives."

Potential spoilers follow.

In the comics, Orpheus' tale plays out much the same way as it does in the Greek myth, with the son of Morpheus and Calliope travelling to the underworld to beg Hades and Persephone to return his slain love Eurydice to him. However, when Orpheus is torn apart by the Maenads on the page, he lives on as a severed head.

Without going into too much detail, Dream's reunion with his son after centuries is what ultimately sets the final chapters of the story in motion.

"There is another world that waits for all of us when we close our eyes and sleep — a place called the Dreaming, where The Sandman, Master of Dreams (Tom Sturridge), gives shape to all of our deepest fears and fantasies. But when Dream is unexpectedly captured and held prisoner for a century, his absence sets off a series of events that will change both the dreaming and waking worlds forever. To restore order, Dream must journey across different worlds and timelines to mend the mistakes he’s made during his vast existence, revisiting old friends and foes, and meeting new entities — both cosmic and human — along the way."

The Sandman also stars Kirby Howell Baptiste as Death, Boyd Holbrook as The Corinthian, Donna Preston as Despair, Stephen Fry as Gilbert, Mason Alexander Park as Desire, Charles Dance as black magician Roderick Burgess, and Sanjeeve Bhaskar as Cain. Joely Richardson will play Ethel Cripps, while David Thewlis will take on the role of her son John Dee, aka the deranged Dr. Destiny.

Overall I really enjoyed this show. Glad it's getting more episodes because the acting and cinematography are pretty solid.

Good show but I feel like it works better for the uninitiated. As a huge fan of the comics, it just isn’t the same without the incredible, awe-inspiring art and coloring. It just felt too much like another Netflix fantasy show aesthetically (a very expensive and glossy one, but still the same through-line).

@tmp3 - Not only that, but the most fantastical stuff is often greatly diminished. Dr Manhattan in Watchmen teaches us that it is indeed possible to bring a character with glowing eyes from the comic to the screen with little change. I feel they shoulda kept that otherworldly vybe Morpheus has, made the Dreaming more fantastical as well. Give 'em a bigger budget, lettum have at it, flaming cloak and starry eyes etc

Gaiman's Sandman comics were so great. I really liked season 1 of this show in spite of the usual Hollyweird nonsense they tossed in.

Still hate the fact that they completely abandoned the gothic aesthetic from of the books.
