THE SANDMAN Writer Neil Gaiman Explains Why Tom Ellis Wasn't Cast As Lucifer; Debunks Taron Egerton Report

The first seven cast members for Netflix's upcoming take on The Sandman were officially announced over the weekend, with Game of Thrones alum Gwendoline Christie taking on the role of Lucifer.

While many fans were delighted with this casting choice, some wondered why Lucifer actor Tom Ellis wasn't brought on to portray Lord of Hell since he does (technically) play the same incarnation of the character on the show.

When a fan put the question to Sandman creator Neil Gaiman on Tumblr, the writer offered a very simple explanation.

"The theology and cosmogony of Lucifer is a long way from Sandman's. It's 'inspired by' Sandman, but you can't easily retrofit the Lucifer version to get back to Sandman, if you see what I mean. It seemed easier and more fun to have the Sandman version of Lucifer be, well, much closer to the Sandman version of Lucifer."

While the Lucifer series is loosely based on the Sandman spinoff of the same name, anyone who's read either comic will know that Ellis' take on the Morningstar is very different to the one on the page.

Gaiman also addressed a recent report that Kingsman star Taron Egerton has joined the cast, making it clear that the source had simply mixed up the Netflix show with the recent Audible adaptation, in which the actor voices John Constantine.

However, Gaiman did confirm that the live-action series will feature JC. It's probably safe to assume that Matt Ryan won't be playing him, though!

If JC does appear, diy his hair blonde - and Jack O’Connell was born to play him. I’ve seen O’Connell forced into some fancast lists, but the dude oozes charisma. Anyone who watched Skins, know he could pull off the dickish personality of John, while still being likeable.

@Se4M4NSt4ine -

Really liked him in Godless, would be happy to see him as John

Answer could've simply been "duh, of course we did."

Also, yes! I really want to see someone else take on Constantine, so this is great news. Doubt they get Stevens (busy guy) so if not:

Charlie Hunnam would be dope

@BlackBeltJones - Given he’s already dabbled in the Motorcycle life, if Mephisto does open the door for Supernatural entities to rummage around in the MCU, Hunnam is my number one choice for Johnny Blaze.

@Se4M4NSt4ine - No objections from me. He would probably kill it.

It’s a fairly obvious to those who know the book why they didn’t take the TV show lucifer. That shows fun but it’s so far off the Sandman version.

Simple explanation is multiverse at least for me.

@Godzilla2000Zer - I don’t think we need one. It’s a different, unrelated show, they’re going with a different take.

@OmegaBlack13 - Completely acknowledge that but my fan canon is multiverse like I said at least for me

@Godzilla2000Zer - Unfortunately, if it's not the same Lucifer, then it's not the same Multiverse. In the DC cosmogony, Hell is in the Sphere of the Gods, so there is only one Lucifer in any multiverse.

Same Oververse or whatever. Same cluster of multiverses.

@GwenLantern - That really only applies to the comics in my opinion.

Well if we're being honest I think anyone who had actually read Neil Gaiman's Sandman and/or Mike Carey's run on Lucifer would immediately notice the vast differences that character has compared to the one in the tv show, that being said can't wait to see Gwendoline Christie's take one the Prince of Darkness himself (herself?); if she has Gaiman's stamp of approval then I have no problem lol.

p.s God I miss that recent Dan watters run of Lucifer, it was so good DAMN YOU DC!!

Matt Ryan should always play JC in any production that involves the character.

@Mankzin2 - He pretty much has for the last few years regardless of continuity. Guess we'll see if that continues here

@Mankzin2 - I don’t know if u can have the same jc that played in the cornball cheese fest that is the arrow verse.As much as I loved him as the character Ryan played in his show and even while he crossed over into the lame universes he was great but I think if this show is actually gonna be a close adaptation to the book then we need a recast because at least to me Matt Ryan’s JC has been tainted by watered down crossovers on legends and the wb
