AVENGERS Director Joss Whedon Returns To TV As Sci-Fi Drama THE NEVERS Is Greenlit By HBO

Firefly and Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon is returning to television with a brand new sci-fi series that has just been greenlit by HBO.

Titled The Nevers, the series is described as “an epic science fiction drama about a gang of Victorian women who find themselves with unusual abilities, relentless enemies, and a mission that might change the world.”

Whedon, who is probably best known around these parts for his contribution to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as director of The Avengers and Age of Ultron, will serve as showrunner. The Nevers marks Whedon's return to the small screen and it's the first show he has created since Fox's Dollhouse.

Whedon said of the project's approval:

“I honestly couldn’t be more excited. The Nevers is maybe the most ambitious narrative I’ve created, and I can’t imagine a better home for it than HBO. Not only are they the masters of cinematic long-form, but their instant understanding of my odd, intimate epic was as emotional as it was incisive. It’s been too long since I created an entirely new fictional world, and the HBO team offer not just scope and experience, not just ‘prestige,’ but a passionate collaboration. I could go on, but — I’m impatiently grateful to say — I have work to do.”

According to sources, HBO was engaged in a bidding war with rival Netflix which could explain why the premium cable network gave the project a direct-to-series order. The news comes just a day after Netflix snapped HBO's 18-year streak as the most-nominated outlet at the Emmys. HBO programming president Casey Bloys added:

"We have long been fans of the incredibly talented and prolific Joss Whedon and we can’t think of a better project than The Nevers with which to welcome him to the HBO family," HBO programming president Casey Bloys said. "We look forward to meeting the strange, multifaceted characters of The Nevers, to learn their stories, see them in action and share them with our viewers. We’re honored that Joss chose HBO as the place to build his ambitious new world and we are excited to get started."

An episode count has not been determined and The Nevers does not yet have a premiere date.

@BlackBeltJones - He did his best with a terrible script. Let it be known that if a world class script doctor were to fix all the structural and mechanical problems with a Terrio script, then all that would remain would be a very soulless, plotless action film (which is what Whedon ended up with). The same would happen if you were to fix all the problems with the BvS script.

At least he got rid of Terrio's endless pretentious tripe inviting us all to speculate on the possible meanings of what is actually a meaningless film and replaced them all with fun Whedonisms and comeraderie (which he can write in his sleep and probably did).

My favorite part of this opening credits sequence, though, is when the "Directed by Zack Snyder" credit comes onwith one final "Everybody knows".

Directed by Zack Snyder? Sure. Everybody knows who it was really directed by.

Whenever I watch this movie I try to count all the Whedon scenes and all of the Snyder scenes and honestly, it appears to be about 80% Whedon.

I saw Firefly and Serenity years ago and I immediately fell in love with it.

Then I saw Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel back to back and they were awesome.

Last month I watched Dollhouse and even though it wasn't his best, I still really enjoyed it.

Of course I've been watching Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. since the beginning.

So I'm intrigued by this.

Well, the brass at AT&T have announced changes coming to HBO. They want it to be more like Netflix.
Oy! Y'all got tricked!

@Battabing @CurlyBill @BlackBeltJones

Yeah I read a report the other day that HBO is planning on overstuffing their library with original content (much like Netflix has) as a result of Netflix nipping at their heels.

Not excited for that.

Rumors of Joss Whedon's demise have been greatly exaggerated it seems.

I'm a fan of Whedon's TV shows so I'll definitely watch this. Plus, it's on HBO.

Off topic: Scarlett Johansson has left Rug & Tug amid backlash.

@BlindWedjat - smart move. I think when you consider the impact it could have on Widow, which is already garnering mixed reactions, this was the right choice.

That movie needs as much good as it can get.

On the other hand, I never saw the issue with her casting. The beauty and thrill of acting is watching someone transform themselves to embody a person they are not. Lets be honest, Rug and Tug needed someone like Scarlett to get it financed. At best, now it may get a few screenings at a festival. Who knows.

@BlackBeltJones - Not gonna lie, the first thing that came to my mind was Scarlett Johansson thinking "Well this Black Widow is looking more like a go, so bye!" lol.

I mean in all honesty I get why she refused to comment initially and why she's left now. It's a complicated situation but it's better to avoid the backlash.

@BlackBeltJones - Yeah, I totally get reasoning behind her casting. Also, I get why an actor would want to take that role. But it's more about taking a role from a transgender actor that have trouble getting cast in anything, let alone something they would be totally suited for.

@BlindWedjat - He has already issued an apology but here is a live shot of Henry Cavill.

Well, she's gotta watch out for Black Widow now.

It's funny, because most people understood Cavill's point.

@BlindWedjat - if that’s the case then American characters shouldn’t be played by British actors. Most American comic characters are played by British 😂😂😂😂😂

This just in: They've replaced her with Avengers co-star Jeremy Renner, which is who they wanted in the first place, but there was some gender confusion when the casting director was told they wanted that Avenger with no superpowers (understandable since the role could be played by either gender).

Jeremy Renner, you will notice looks exactly like the real life Dante Gill.
