Carice van Houten On Joining Game Of Thrones Season 2

You can watch the following video interview if you like but unless you speak Dutch, the only reason will be to see the lovely Miss van Houten. Our paraphrased transcript is below..

In the interview van Houten reveals that she was originally up for a role in the first season but had to turn it down due to time constraints. The part she would have played is unknown but is believed to be that of Queen Cersei(now played by Lena Headey). HBO came back and asked her to audition for another role and she won the part of Stannis Baratheon's Sorceress Melisandre..

"It’s quite a manipulative roll. She’s a priestess and she has no problem seducing men and making them do whatever she wants.

The series hasn’t made a great impact on my life yet. But there are a lot of expectations. There are so many people that love the series and that have read the books a thousand times over. It seems to be quite the hit in America and even in The Netherlands it has a large following, even though it has not been shown on television over here. So there is a lot of pressure to do it right."

Van Outen also says that she has signed on for several seasons.

Translation Interview

Voice over:
After Valkyrie and Repo man, Carice van Houten begins her next big American adventure. She’s going to play a lead in the series Game of Thrones which begins shooting today.

Carice van Houten:
I’v been approached for an earlier season and a different part. Unfortunately I couldn’t make that audition. So the reproached me and asked me if I wanted to do an audition for a different role, and I thought to myself: “yes, this seems pretty interesting.” So I auditioned in front of 5 men in a small room in Ireland. This was quite frightening.

Voice over:
In the series Carice plays a red headed woman that can gaze into the future.

Carice van Houten:
It’s quite a manipulative roll.

So there is a lot of pressure to do it right.

Voice over:
Despite the hype surrounding Game of Thrones, Carice herself is not a big series junkie.

Carice van Houten:
I followed most of the Soprano’s. I saw the first season of many shows, but I don’t have time to see the rest. I have seen all of the episodes of The Office and Extra’s. Multiple times even. I think those are two of the most brilliant shows on TV. I find it hard to follow a series, except when it’s comedy like ‘Curb your enthusiasm’.

Voice over:
The series is expected to air in America in April 2012. If and when the show will come to Holland isn’t known. What we do know is that Carice van Houten will be ‘in the game’ for a while.

Carice van Houten:
Yes, this will take make several years. I will play this role for a while. I don’t know if the series will reach the sixth book, that depends on its popularity over the years. I have signed for several seasons.

Van Houten is great choice as Melisandre! Plus very beautiful!:P

If someone wants to see her play Witch. They should watch Black Death. Starring: Sean Bean.

@spilox excellent translation!
Sinds ik weet dat ze Malisandre speelt volg ik 'r ook op twitter: @caricevhouten.
Recently I saw her opposite to Sean Bean in Black Death. I think you'll get a sense how she'll approach the Malisandre character in that movie. However, I hope she'll loose the Dutch accent she had in Black Death.

@Marvelousroland and johan02, no problem guys, thats what i'm here for.

@bropous, actually Belgium is a great country to visit and the people are quite easy going (well except for the French speaking side :p). I recomend you go there sometime. Antwerp is a much nicer city then Amsterdam and the food is awesome!

@Gusto, yes she is. She's one of a hand full of Dutch actresses trying to make it in the states right now. So lets hope she does :D.

@Marvelous Roland, i'll check her out on twitter to. Just have to make an account :P. Lot of Dutch people popping up on this site recently. Ook een Dark Tower fan zie ik? Geniale boeken!

@susspense smith, most Dutch people don't resprond well to being called nazi's my friend (most people wont btw). The Dutch have always had a strained relation with our neighbours and we don't like being compared to each other.

I know most Americans find it hard to hear or know the difference. We saw that when a German character in Transformers 3 was called Dutch -_-'.
We know the difference between an American and a Canadian, so maybe you can learn the difference.

@bropous i actually liked the joke, but @spilox's right. If you get the change, Antwerp's a great city, food's good, people are easy-going. Although I don't know how well their general English is. And while you're in the neighborhood, check out Dutch cities Maastricht and Groningen. Much cooler than amsterdam.

@spilox, I've been coming to this site quite some years now, but always lurking ;)

Enough with the promotion tour, let's go on topic again!
Where were we? Ah, Carice <3
