GAME OF THRONES Actress Hannah Waddingham Was Waterboarded For REAL During Unella Torture Scene

Hannah Waddingham only had a small part in the sixth season of HBO's Game of Thrones, but she certainly made an impression as Septa Unella, aka the "Shame Nun."

As one of the High Sparrow's fanatical Faith Militant followers, Unella was responsible for keeping Cersei Lannister imprisoned as she prepared for her Walk of Atonement, and accompanied the Queen on her humiliating stroll through the streets of King's Landing. Later, Cersei enacted her revenge by tying her down to a table and torturing her with the help of The Mountain.

While speaking to Collider, Waddingham revealed that shooting this scene was not exactly a pleasant experience, as she ended up being waterboarded for real!

“I was strapped to a wooden table with proper big straps for 10 hours,” The Ted Lasso star explained. “And definitely, other than childbirth, it was the worst day of my life. Because Lena was uncomfortable pouring liquid in my face for that long, and I was beside myself. But in those moments you have to think, do you serve the piece and get on with it or do you chicken out and go, ‘No, this isn’t what I signed up for, blah, blah, blah?’”

“The funny thing was, after we’d finished shooting it for the whole day, and people like Miguel Sapochnik, the director by the way, walking past with a cup of tea and a sandwich on-the-go and going, ‘Hi hunny, you alright?’ And I was like, ‘Not really. The crew have just been saying we are actually really waterboarding you here.’ And I was like, ‘Yup, you don’t need to tell me that!’”

Waddingham also revealed that Unella's treatment was very nearly much worse, as the character was originally going to be sexually assaulted by the Mountain before being killed.

“She was meant to be raped by The Mountain, and I think they’d had so many complaints about the rape of Sansa [Sophie Turner] that they chose not to go with it,” said the actress.

Probably a smart move - the last thing Game of Thrones needed was another rape scene!

I'm not show how I would feel if the Mountain suddenly became a rapist for the sake of a shock moment when up until that exact scene he was just an emotionless drone for Cersei. It would be so out of character for him to do such an act just to make news headlines.

@SonOfAGif - Not saying they should've done it, but I don't think it would've been entirely out of character. He raped Oberyn's sister and maintained some of his identity (mainly his cruelty) even in zombie mode. In this scenario, I think it would've been more a case of Cersei ordering it than the zombie Mountain seizing her out of his own urges.

@SonOfAGif - Wait, no he was a rapist before that. It's part of his origin. That's why Pedro Pascal wanted to kill him in the first place right?

@Nightwing1015 - But he was still self aware. As the series progressed from that moment he was nothing more but a brain dead brute who only followed orders. It would be like if Jason Voorhees performed an act of rape after he became a zombie. The Mountain (Zombie) didn't do anything unless Cersei required him. He was a drone.

@SonOfAGif - He raped Oberyn’s sister and several other women in the books. Horrible monster even before the transformation

I'm glad they didn't have her raped. It's unnecessary shock value and tasteless. I get that would have been the point but... yeah I'm glad they didn't.

I... don't think stuff like that should actually be happening on a set. That could easily go wrong and end with the actor's death and you getting fired, sued, going to prison or all of the above. Same thing with hangings and using real weapons.

They should have waterboarded the creators of the last two seasons.

I have to watch it again, but the way Sersi was speaking from my memory, I assumed the Moutain was still going to rape her and it’s implied it will happen, just off-screen.

That is ridiculous. There is no need to actually torture or hurt an actor onscreen. That's not authenticity, it's lunacy. Some directors don't seem to undetstand that to act is to pretend, not experience, what characters are going through.

I always felt the mountain raped her. Imagination can be a powerful thing. you don't have to necessarily see it on screen.

It feels like every month there’s something new that comes out about just how awful Benioff & Weiss & co. we’re on this show. Between this and some of what went down on Westword, HBO really needs to step up their oversight.
