A Song of Ice and Fire readers have been (im)patiently waiting for the next book in the series since A Dance with Dragons hit shelves all the way back in 2011, and author George R.R. Martin has now shared a (relatively) optimistic update on his progress.

During an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Martin confirmed that he is "three quarters of the way done" with The Winds of Winter.

"I am making progress with The Winds of Winter, but it's still not done yet. I think it's going to be a very big book," Martin said. "I think I'm about three-quarters of the way done. The characters all interweave. I've actually finished with some of the characters, I've got their whole story, but not others. So I have to finish all that weaving. Still gonna take me awhile."

Martin is constantly bombarded by fans wondering when they can expect to delve back into the fantasy saga, and while this is a positive sign that he is at least approaching the finish line, it sounds like we still have a ways to go before the book is in our hands.

"I do know one thing for certain," added the writer. "We're going to deliver it, and it's going to be published, and the next day I'll get the first tweet asking, 'Where's A Dream of Spring?'"

Martin has shared several excerpts from the novel over the years, but nothing too revealing. While these final two books are expected to mirror the later seasons of HBO's Game of Thrones to a degree, the author has previously confirmed that there will be some significant differences - especially when it comes to the ending.

Will Bran Stark still end up on the Iron Throne? Will Jon Snow kill Daenerys after she breaks bad and burns an entire city to ashes? We'd bank on at least one major change to the conclusion of the show, but we'll just have to wait and see.

Winds of Winter should be a movie set in an alternate universe to the TV show but with as many as the same actors reprising characters as they can get (some may need to be de-aged).

@ObserverIO - all of them will have to be de-aged at this point, better to just reboot in 20 years

I’m hoping for an animated series to come out after the books are done that stick to the books much closer. I have seen some really cool fan art of the characters that are a amazing.

Too late now, your fat ass should've finished this book years ago. You left the fate of the tv show in the hands of two non-neuronal donkeys.

@MaxPaint - He's fat and left the show with donkeys because he's richer than you or I will ever be

Anyone would do the same

@UncleHarm1 - "Anyone would do the same"

Not me, and money isn't just everything you can aspire in life, and if that was the case, why is he finishing the book now? He has the money he doesn't need to finish anything according to you. So no, your point of him being richer than anyone is just irrelevant.

@MaxPaint - To quote the philosopher Method Man, "cash rules everything around me, c.r.e.a.m get the money, dolla dolla bill y'all."

Only poors say they don't care about money O_o

@UncleHarm1 - Method man? a philosopher? Whatever.

"Only poors say they don't care about money O_o"

That "statement" says more about you than me, carry on with your life.

Been waiting pretty much as long for The Doors Of Stone from Patrick Rothfuss. I’ve just about given up. He’s got plenty of time to write unrelated shorts, publish other peoples’ books, attend conventions, play games and run live streams, but can’t find time to finish a god damned book 😡

@Tasmaniac - Several years back, I defended both of them as being able to write at whatever pace they want to. And while that is still technically true, they need to realize that people will lose interest.

It seems pretty ridiculous to take 15 years to write the 6th book in your 7 book series when there are authors out there like Brandon Sanderson that can pump out multiple fantasy books a year.

The ending of the show was just heart breaking. I hated that Bran was on the throne. I never really understood why people were so mad about Danaerys attacking, since that was pretty much what the entire point of her storyline was about for the whole series.

But that last season.......it was just so bad with so many poor endings for characters we watched for so long.

@CorndogBurglar - Danny turning evil was pretty on point to me. It wasn’t telegraphed that well in the show, but it fits her character and lineage. I think too many people just saw her as the hero and got mad when the show didn’t follow their head cannon.

I think the downward spiral of the show started in season 5. Then in six, when they passed the books up, it really started going off the rails.

To the Bran on the throne thing, I think it could have been the most game of thrones thing ever if he had been using his three eyed raven powers to manipulate everything and then he ends up being a brutal dictator because that’s what he feels is needed to steer Westeros properly. But they way they did it, with the stupid council just electing him and it ending on pretty much a happy note, yeah that was dumb.

Always suspected it, but this confirms it. The guy has a simple solution--he's planning on living forever. Let's see how that turns out.

DotD was released on 2011, it took George 11 years to get to 75%, so my math says he'll be done by 2025-2026, assuming his pace continues.

It bothers me how all the titles in this series start with an 'A' except this one.

A Dance with Dragons came out in July of 2011. If he's 75% done with The Winds of Winter, we're looking at at least March of 2026 before it's finished.
