GAME OF THRONES Concept Art Reveals A Very Different Look For The Villainous Night King

A new book is coming out that'll explore "The Art of Game of Thrones," and one piece, in particular, reveals a shocking - and terrifying - alternate look for the villainous Night King. Check it out here...

Vanity Fair has shared some pieces from The Art of Game of Thrones, a new book which sheds some light on how different the Night King could have looked in the HBO series, among other things.

Prosthetics designer Barrie Gower has explained this alternate look for the fearsome villain (which you can see below), and this take is a little more ancient looking than the icey demon that menaced Jon Snow and company on the show. Oh, and if that doesn't make him look creepy enough, he also has a crown embedded directly into his skull.

"He would be the leader of the White Walkers, the original White Walker, so we needed him to have a sense of power," Gower shares. "We talked about creating a crown that could be fused into his head, something organic, that felt very much a part of him. As the White Walkers have a very icy and cold palette, it made sense to explore sharp and angular forms, with a translucent quality to help sell the subzero temperature of his flesh."

Set for release today, The Art of Game of Thrones features lots of artwork from the show, but this piece definitely stands out as showing something vastly different to what ended up on TV.

Do you guys think this version of the Night King would have been better?

What they did with the walkers just ruined this show, I hope the books deal with this differently.

@SethBullock - Walkers have already been said up very differently in the books. They are not some corpse-like ice zombies.

Looks kind of like a statue...Fitting since the character basically stood around and did nothing anyway...

Game of Thrones as a series was really a terrible adaptation.

The "White Walkers" aren't even called "White Walkers" in the books. They are called "The Others". And they don't look skeletal and dehydrated.

And in the books they have a language and that implies they have a culture.

In the show they are mute nothings. What a disaster.

And that concept art is horrible.

@WilliamCipher - Ah. Noted. It's been a while since I read the books.

It's just a shame that Martin's life work got butchered by hacks.

Most concept art looks great. It's telling that the concept art looks that bad. They strayed very far from Martin's vision.

@WilliamCipher - This show really shat the bed in the end as far as villains are concerned.

The worst thing about the White Walkers is that they had great build up and a great backstory. Surely it was going somewhere? lol. nope. Just the most uninspired stuff ever.

Not just the White Walkers but even Cersei.

Two great villains just so blandly dispatached, it almost unbelievable.

@Comicbookart - There is also no Night King in the books, no explicit leader of the Others.

There is a historical figure named the Night's King (note the apostrophe), a Lord Commander of the Night's Watch who married an Other woman and betrayed the human race, but there is no indication that figure is still alive and the TV's Big Bad has a completely different origin as the first human turned into an Other.

GRRM confirmed the Night's King will stay in the past in his books. D&D wanted a clearly established evil figurehead they could kill and by proxy, take every other Other/White Walker with them.

That being said, I do think both the Others coming from the Children of the Earth wanting to fight humans and the threat became stronger than both species, and that the characters will deal with them first and then have a "So what now, what about King's Landing and all that?" reaction are both GRRM villains. The former is foreshadowed in the books, especially AGoT, and the later totally makes sense with how Martin views fantasy. He often said in interviews "What was Aragorn's policy on taxes or orc hunting after Sauron was defeated?"

@DalekCraigWasson - It says villains where it should say ideas. Weird.

@DalekCraigWasson - True. Which is why I used White Walkers plural. And didn't mention the Night's King.

Which the show didn't even get that right and just made it into Night King lol.

I imagine that GRRM will be far more creative with the Others than this series.

After all what use is there of a "king" when the subjects are undead and the goal is to cause an eternal blackout.

@WilliamCipher - GRRM would agree with you. Even with his book series unfinshed, there was still material that could have continued for many more seasons. D&D just wanted to rush through it.

I feel bad for GRRM.

@WilliamCipher - That was because of the name of The Others already existed in the LOST series, which was at the end in the beginning of production of GoT. Guess they've tried to not confuse the general audiences.

This serves as a reminder that even with the absurdity of Season 8, the wight hunt is still probably the single dumbest episode in the show.
