GAME OF THRONES Creator George R.R. Martin Confirms His Novels Will End Differently To HBO's TV Series

The final season of Game of Thrones was hugely divisive, and The Winds of Winter author George R.R. Martin has now confirmed that his book will differ greatly from what we saw in the series finale...

To say that Game of Thrones' final season was divisive would be an understatement. Many long-time fans downright hated it, hence why there are still campaigns for those last batch of episodes to be remade. That won't happen, but salvation could be found in the form of George R.R. Martin's next novel in his A Song of Ice and Fire series, The Winds of Winter

The book has been hit by countless delays at this stage, and while the author has said before that the ending of his saga will differ from the HBO Max series, it sounds like those differences will be significant across the board.

In a new entry on Not A Blog (via SFFGazette.com), Martin says: "What I have noticed more and more of late, however, is my [writing] is taking me further and further away from the television series. Yes, some of the things you saw on HBO in Game of Thrones you will also see in The Winds of Winter (though maybe not in quite the same ways)...but much of the rest will be quite different."

Explaining that these changes are inevitable, the writer would go on to reveal that the biggest reason for this is that the books are so much more in-depth and complicated. Remember, there are a lot of characters in A Song of Ice and Fire who never made it into the TV show, not to mention others who did that are basically unrecognisable when compared on the screen and page.

"One thing I can say, in general enough terms that I will not be spoiling anything," Martin would add, "[is that] not all of the characters who survived until the end of Game of Thrones will survive until the end of A Song of Ice and Fire, and not all of the characters who died on Game of Thrones will die in A Song of Ice and Fire."

The last book in this series was released way back in 2011, so this next instalment has been a long time coming. There was a huge amount of backlash to Bran Stark ending up on the Iron Throne ruling over Westeros, not to mention Jon Snow's decision to kill Daenerys Targaryen. If Martin has taken note, there's every chance he'll have changed his books to avoid a similar level of disappointment (if indeed that was ever how he intended to end this story on the page).

There's still no release date for The Winds of Winter, but with the author hard at work on this novel, you'll want to stay tuned to SFFGazette.com for the latest updates.

It's cute that he's still pretending like he's ever going to finish them.

My kids will be long gone before he finishes the books. I have lost all faith. I think he wrote himself into a corner and had/has know idea how to get out.

@sKeemAn - He's going to release it al right. At least a portion of it. The thing is he's going to split the book into 3. First book will be entirely told from Shitmouth, The Shavepate, Hosteen Frey and one of the Sandsnakes. Book 2 will be the exact same time frame but with characters we care about (mostly Theon's uncles, Arianne and Areoh Hotah). Book 3 will be exact same time frame as other 2, but with Jon, Dany, Bran, Sansa, Arya, Brienne, Jaime, Tyrion and everyone else.

@Blergh - I remember I read somewhere years ago that he met with the show runners well before pre production started and they correctly guessed how the book series would end. If I’m remembering that correctly shame on this guy. But if I’m remembering it incorrectly shame on me.

@OldMan - The story I remember is before GRRM gave them the rights to the books he asked them if they knew who Jon Snow’s mother was and they correctly guessed Lyanna Stark. There’s lots of hints to R+L=J in the books and it was a popular fan theory, but it had not and still hasn’t actually been confirmed in the books. But I guess them figuring that out was enough for him to trust them with the rights. I think the other stuff from the ending he planned, like Bran becoming king and Dany going mad, he just told them about.

@Blergh - You sound really stupid. A lot about the books isn't even in the show. It is pretty obvious the ending was never going to be the same.

Not surprising. The ending of the show wasn't loved by everyone, so going in a different direction with the books makes sense. The show was kind of a trial to see if people liked Bran on the throne I guess, so wonder what'll happen in the books.

The only writing of GRRM that i have ever read is his letters to the Marvel bullpen in the 60s Marvel comics.

Well, judging from how poorly the show was received in the end, it would be a surprise if he repeated it.

The sad part is he likely would have made billions if he finished his books before the show, when this IP was at its hottest. But he waited too long. Now people will buy it just out of curiosity. Not that he cares that much, he's made money hand over fist already.

"GAME OF THRONES Creator George R.R. Martin Confirms His Novels Will End"

Surely that's the headline here.

Hey, it must be hell. He's made dumper-trucks of cash, had a TV series for the material come and go, and he's created a massive sprawling world with which he now has to do the hardest thing--actually conclude it. Actually bring the threads together. Having left it this long, I do not sympathize with that predicament. It's much easier to get the toys out the box than it is to fit them together. Mortality caught up with Robert Jorden, and it caught up with Kentaro Miura (if you like GoT, read Berserk). It's not being mean to suggest someone might die before they finish a project that's taking 25+ years. It's just practical. And there's meant to be another one after this? At least one more? Then something has to change.
