I think most of us that have read George R.R. Martin's source novels were expecting the Game Of Thrones season 4 finale to end on the appearance of Lady Stoneheart, aka the resurrected Caitlyn Stark. In the books, she's brought back to life by Beric Dondarrion and Thoros, but is left a terrifying shell of her former self, bent on vengeance against those that murdered her son. It seemed like the perfect cliffhanger to bring us into season 5 -- except it doesn't sound like Stoneheart will be a part of season 5..or any season after that either. Here's what actress Michelle Fairley had to say when quizzed about it by EW.

There was a lot of online conversation. I heard third-hand that you were basically told that it’s not likely to ever happen. Is that accurate?
Yeah, the character’s dead. She’s dead.
Do you have a preference at all—do you think Catelyn’s arc should end where it ended, or would you be into the resurrection idea?
You respect the writers’ decision. I knew the arc, and that was it. They can’t stick to the books 100 percent. It’s impossible—they only have 10 hours per season. They have got to keep it dramatic and exciting, and extraneous stuff along the way gets lost in order to maintain the quality of brilliant show.

If Stoneheart is not used, it represents probably the biggest deviation from the novels yet. The character hasn't really made a massive impact on the story so far, but you have to believe that Martin has some pretty big plans for her in the remaining couple of books. Are you disappointed by this news, or do you think it's best for the tv show? If you want some further discussion on this and the other biggest changes from the source material, you can read my thoughts on the matter HERE.

She's got a point though. Seeing as how Lady Stoneheart is a zombie with extensive facial scarring, they could just recast, to truly sell the fact that Catelyn Stark as we knew her, is dead.

I love the show and everything they've done but I think this story would have been very good to tell. If season 4 ended like this it would have been amazing. I hope they bring her in eventually.

The screwed up the end of this season...omitting the Tysha admission was thoughtless and ill conceived.

That arc was absolutely critical to Tyrion's character development.

that might be the first change that REALLY bothers me. well, this and the one where jaime kills his cousin. still, i dont believe what they say. they might wanna keep it a surprise for book readers too.

No Lady Stoneheart will totally rewrite multiple story arcs including Brienne's and to that extent Jaime's. WTF......

So what was the point of bringing in the Brothers Without Banners and showing Beric get resurrected? I thought their purpose was to set up Lady Stoneheart?

it could be a trick in word play, Cat Stark is dead and lady stoneheart isnt exactly alive in the traditional sense.

She could be lying to hide the fact that lady stoneheart will appear.

I really need to watch the first 3 seasons...stupid internet...

Awesome write-up on the changes Ror. You got some asshole commenters over there, though.

From what I've read about the character of Lady Stoneheart, seems like a character that'll cause some serious shit later on. May be disappointing to not see it. But you never know, the show runners could add the character in once her arc fully forms.

@CplHicks

I was thinking the same thing. I'm not sure what they were trying to accomplish by showing that resurrection if it wasn't for bringing in Lady Stoneheart. Especially since they went an entire srason without touching on it again.

It seems pointless to have gone through the stuff about Beric and Thoros and Beric being resurrected over and over if they were just going to drop Lady Stoneheart.

I'm starting to think that there's no big plan for any of the characters. They wander around and eventually get killed, and that's it. But I like the show anyway.

@ CplHicks: Indeed. Why have they shown us the gun, if it will never be used? I can't imagine any way to reconnect this scene with the ongoing story that ain't cheesy and far-fetched. Just as a display of magic rising in the world or perhaps forshadowing a way to "correct" the ending of the fifth book, would be too far from the spirit of the story.

"They only have 10 hours per season" … and they also have a problem with not having enough material that they're catching up to the books haha. In other words use more stuff and go slower

GOOD.

That actress is as ugly as a blue-assed baboon walking backwards.

But they already started wandering off the reservation with this show. No Coldhands, Varys going with tyrion to the Free Cities, etc.

Great show, but starting to veer just a little too far from the books.

We'll see how much further they push the envelope next season.

We just saw the undead in the last ep. Bringing her into the show wouldn't make it less realistic.

The only way I can see it now of bringing Lady Stoneheart into the show is if they do it later in the fifth season, where (sorry, spoiler here for those who haven't read the books) Brienne meets up with her for the first time. Cause as of right now, with all stories like this one being plastered all over the internet, the shock and surprise effect is gone. If they start the fifth season off with her, which is highly unlikely right now, it won't be as shocking as if they had done it properly, ending this past season with her appearance. If they don't add her all together, then yes, it will be the biggest omission from the books, which will suck big time, even though her storyline isn't that big to begin with, but she does have some good scenes in the books, and I for one would like to see them brought to life on the show, instead of the writers adding unwanted shit that's not in the books at all. Hopefully they will go that route and add her, even if it means using another actress. Hell, they recast a few characters already in the fourth season...the Mountain, Tommen, just to name a couple.

@Tidaltree

People are saying (and i tend to agree) that its just careful choice of words from Michelle, yes Catelyn is dead, but Stoneheart will live.

Im still not entirely sure, im just being hopeful, but i guess if they really wanted to, they could cut her from the show, but i dont agree

This really doesn't mean she won't come back. At this point it's anyone's guess. I doubt very seriously that they'd flat out announce or confirm it if it was going to happen.

And yes, I'm the guy months ago who was ranting about how the show sounded sophomoric because of what everyone was saying. Shortly after that rant I started watching it. Two weeks later and I'd caught up with what was airing. lol
