GAME OF THRONES: George R.R. Martin Reaffirms That A DREAM OF SPRING Will Have Different Ending

Author George R.R. Martin definitely appears to be trying to create separation between the conclusion of his beloved fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire and how HBO chose to end its adaptation.

If you were truly unhappy with how season 8 of HBO's Game of Thrones ended, you're in luck.  Series author George R.R. Martin is reaffirming that the fantasy series will end differently than how the HBO series concluded. The question now is whether the ending was changed before or after season 8's final episode.

Previously, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss stated that they derived the ending of the series directly from GRRM himself (they assert that Bran is going to end up on the Iron Throne in the books as well).  However, the author later clarified that the ending he told the Benioff and Weiss was relayed over five years ago, insinuating that things would play out differently in A Dream of Spring, the final entry in A Song of Ice and Fire.

In a new interview with German newspaper Welt (via Men's Health), Martin is once again claiming that the true ending of Game of Thrones will play out in his books.  "People know an ending—but not the ending," Martin teased. "The makers of the TV show had overtaken me, which I didn't expect."

Do you think Martin is changing his ending due to the amount of backlash the season 8 finale received? Or did he just simply tell Benioff and Weiss his plans so long ago that by the time the show was set to end, Martin was already headed in a different direction?

Sadly, it will likely be quite the wait to see how things ultimately play out in the novels as The Winds of Winter is still without a release date, meaning it will likely be years before A Dream of Spring hits bookstore shelves.

GoT was absolutely the best TV show ever for me - before Season 8 killed it.

The finale was so bad that it made me not ever wanting to re-watch the show ever again (due to how good things are set-up, then thrown out of the window for the ending).

He never told them the ending so why he is saying they overtaking him and no, he didn't change it.

@RegularPoochie - He probably told them his plans for the ending in the books, for example that after stoppping the dead, Daenerys will lose her mind and will burn King's Landing and John will have to kill her, etc...

But in such long books you can get there differently with a pace that makes more sense, Martin has said the show should have been like ten seasons, the extra seasons could have been used for the long night being actually long and not just one battle episode where all of the dead are killed in the dumbest way, and to show how Daenerys becomes another ruthless Targaryen even if she thinks she is doing the right think, that could have been developed for several seasons instead of just a few episodes, because in the show she is shown as someone who could potentially become what she ultimately becomes, but the last steps into madness in the last episodes feel too rushed, there is so much stuff that the show could have tried to do better, but they just didn't have the books, they only had Martin's notes/"sketches" of what would happen, and the show's writers just didn't know how properly to do it without the books and everything felt incredibly rushed to end the show asap, however Martin won't have that problem with the last books and I hope because of that the ending will be much better even if most of the main plot points are the same.

@SethBullock - I don’t think the white walkers oveall are going to play much of a role in the book series. They barely have a presence in the novels

@MrDandy - Idk, the next book is titled Winds Of Winter iirc, there is the "Winter Is Coming" stuff and the references to the Long Night, I think there will be a pay off to all of that somehow and I doubt it will be as simple as in the show with just a single night of battle in Winterfell, that was really disappointing imo, I think the last couple of books will mostly follow the plot of the show but making more sense, making it better, and a part of that will be fighting the others/white walkers and Daenerys going crazy during and after that with John feeling forced to stop her, all of that is too important for the story imo to be significantly changed, but I think Martin will handle it better than the writers in the show, though I might be wrong, idk.

Finished Sword of Storms a month or so ago. So hopefully this book comes out as soon as I'm caught up.
