GAME OF THRONES: Not Even George R.R. Martin Knows How The HBO Series Is Going To End

The final season of Game of Thrones is still shrouded in secrecy, but surely the author of the books upon which the show is based knows what's going to happen... right? Not according to Martin himself...

HBO recently released the first trailer for the final season of Game of Thrones, and while it gave fans some idea of what to expect from the finale of the mega-popular fantasy drama series, not even the writer of the source material knows exactly how it's going to end.

George R.R. Martin gave showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss a rough outline of his plans for the conclusion of the Song of Ice and Fire saga years ago so they'd know what to work towards, but since then the show has diverged - sometimes pretty significantly - from the events of the books, and Martin has also made a few changes to his story in the interim.

During an interview with EW, the writer discussed the upcoming eighth season of the show, and made it clear that he's still in the dark about some of the big events of the finale.

“I haven’t read the [final-season] scripts and haven’t been able to visit the set because I’ve been working on Winds,” Martin reveals. “I know some of the things. But there’s a lot of minor-character [arcs] they’ll be coming up with on their own. And, of course, they passed me several years ago. There may be important discrepancies.”

At the very least, the show won't spoil everything that's going to happen in the final two books once they're published. Martin is currently working on The Winds of Winter, which still doesn't have an ETA.

How do you guys think Game of Thrones will wrap up? You can check out the recent trailer along with a series of character posters below.

Hmm I'm betting on everyone dying and the Night King taking the iron throne, or Jon gets it and Jamie kills Cersi. So many options!

Maybe if he actually worked faster and finished his story on time he would not be on the dark.

He’s as fast as Yoshihiro Togashi in updating Hunter x Hunter or Kentaro Miura with Berserk.

@NinnesMBC - unfortunately i think Togashi had health issues if i'm not mistaken and you could tell for his last arc of yu yu haksho one of my top 7 animes of all time .

@knocturnalzen10 - Recently or before? That sucks and hope he improves if true. I always liked YuYu Hakusho a bit more though.

@NinnesMBC - i think before , not recently but i've heard hunter x hunter has some of the most well thought out fight scenes in anime history .... it's almost like he treats it though like he can come back to it when he gets new idea's for the series . nothing consistent

I just hope Cersi dies, either by Jamie or Tyrion's hand. She's a great character, but she needs to go for what she's done.

I think Danny might actually die. But Jon will refuse the crown -- he'll become Warden of the North (unless they want to give that to Sansa?).

The crown may go to Gendry. In any case, I hope it's unexpected and not a fairytale ending.

The major battle will be at Winterfell, but there will also be a minor battle at King's Landing.

The final episode will all be falling action and conversations to tie up loose ends in a satisfactory manner. Cersi may not die until this final episode.

@PsychoticSpaceRaccoon - the one think about this show i've learned is when you want someone to die show badly you can taste it ..... something happens to them so horrific you almost feel bad for them in small aspects....

we can just hope Cersi gets a quick end and nothing long and drawn out .... because some people on this show get too creative with manners of torture

I wonder if he finished Winds of Winter and is waiting for the series to end before he drops it. If not, I seriously don't think he will ever finish.

So the ending of the show could be different to the book. So we could have a different person sitting on the iron throne when they both conclude.

Something tells me that (if Martin ever finishes the last two novels) the ending of the show is completely different than the books. Or at least the actions taken to get to the ending are different.

Is it really surprising that he doesn't know considering he's been trolling people for years about finishing the next book, let alone the series. I get that authors need time, but it's ridiculous. He spends plenty of time on other projects. I think he has writer's block for how to end it. He's probably waiting to see what the show does.

I'm pretty doubtful that he doesn't know the ending to a show he produces and owns partially, at the very least he probably sent the show's writers an email detailing out what the end should be.. right?

Quite sure the ending is going to be crap like the last season. Nonsense after nonense.
What made GoT great was the characters. Now Littlefinger is retard, Cersey is retard, all perceived evil characters are retard and will die stupidly.
Daenerys and Jhon will be unstopple. the starks have a plot armor thick as earth itself. It has been going downhill and I see no stop.
