GAME OF THRONES Prequel Spinoff HOUSE OF THE DRAGON Ordered Straight To Series At HBO

Hot on the heels of one Game of Thrones spinoff getting axed, HBO has ordered the Targaryen-centric House of the Dragon, which will be based on George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood, straight to series.

After killing one Game of Thrones prequel series, HBO has given life to another as the premium network has just announced that they've officially given a full series order of ten episodes to House of the Dragon, which hails from writers George R.R. Martin and Ryan Condal and will be based on Martin's Fire & Blood book.

The now-official prequel series will be set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones, and will tell the epic story of the monumental rise and tragic fall of the legendary House Targaryen.

In addition to writing the series, Condal will also serve as co-showrunner alongside acclaimed Thrones director and 2x Primetime Emmy Award-winner Miguel Sapochnik, who helmed six episodes ("The Gift," "Hardhome," "Battle of the Bastards," "The Winds of Winter," "The Long Night" and "The Bells." ) throughout the course of the series' eight-season run.

Sapochnik will also helm the pilot, which is expected to go into production much sooner than we thought, and has also been tapped to direct additional episodes down the line.

Emilia Clarke previously played the fan-favorite Daenerys Targaryen on Game of Thrones and earned four Primetime Emmy Award nominations for her work on the series.

As for the rest of those Game of Thrones prequel series, it appears that only two are still in any sort of active development, but no word yet on what those could be centered around.

I'm interested to see how this works. Did they really announce this would start with the Conquest, 300 years ago? Is it going to be more of an anthology series, then, with each season a different chapter in the history? I had thought they were just focusing on the Dance?

@SerKurtWagner - Doom, conquest and Dance. GRRM has already said that.

@RegularPoochie - The sequel to this is possibly rebellion, because he have shown some interests to that lately.

@RegularPoochie - It's definitely sounding like this is just the Dance. That's what the rumors were before and that's what Martin's most recent "Not-A-Blog" post makes it sound like. I think a lot of the online sites just saw "Based on Fire and Blood" and ran with the whole "300 years ago" thing.

@SerKurtWagner - but there was this hour long interview just month ago and he kinda said that it would cover those things, I guess he changed his mind.

@RegularPoochie - We shall see. It would certainly be cool to see the Doom. That type of anthology just seems like a huge risk, and the Conquest would be hard to make compelling from the POV of the Targaryens themselves. We'll have to wait and see.

@SerKurtWagner - I can pm you the video if i find it where Martin talks about it. None of those series goes on without his permission and people listens what he want's.

My god that description sounds so epic, the co writer of the book showrunning with the director of the most cinematic episodes of Game of Thrones, telling the story of Aegon conquering the 7 Kingdoms with his sister/wives, dozons of giant fire breathing dragons, Meager the Cruel vs The Zealots of the Seven, a Targaryen civil war with tons of political intrigue and with Dumb and Dumber well far away from this, That is a [frick]ing allstar team, this has potential to vastly surpass the original series.

Only thing that can ruin this is if they introduce black Targaryens with white hair or something, don't destroy my suspension of disbelief please with Political Correctness. And before anyone @'s me, I'm black. I don't need representation I want to see Fire & Blood come to LIFE with Purple damn eyes and all!

You need more people.

@Chaos200 - I don't see them race-changing any Targaryens, given how key racial purity is to their whole identity. But, that said, making the whole line black wouldn't be as far-fetched as it may seem. Martin himself has said that part of him wishes he had wrote them that way originally.

@EskimoJ - What do you mean "We don't believe you", who's 'we' the Royal We?
@SerKurtWagner If they are gonna do representation they should be clever about it instead of so [frick]king lazy, Fire & Blood is essentially a series of events rather than a cohesive story, it's more like a history book. So they have more freedom, they don't have to follow a struct narrative. They should introduce an all black army from the Summer Isles that come to invade Westeros, make some evil, some gray and some good characters in this army, interwoven them in to the story, CREATE some new interesting characters for representation, rather than changing established ones, especially in a universe where the main characters have been established visually in 8 prior seasons.

Martin said part of him wishes he wrote them that way? You mean like how JK Rowling retroactively is making her Harry Potter characters gay when the media keep asking stupid identity questions? He doesn't wish that, he's towing the line like everyone else asked those dumb questions.

@Chaos200 -Martin's quote said that it was something he considered doing when first writing the books, to further distinguish Valyrian ancestry from the rest of Westeros. I don't think it's meant to be retroactive at all.

I do agree that they shouldn't try race-swapping any of the Targaryen's as a whole. There are some (the children of Martells) for example, that would make sense to be of mixed-race. But as a whole, genetic purity was huge for them, so they need to stay pretty clearly "pale, white hair, light eyes."

If we're dealing with just Dance, at the very least there's Nettles, who has a big role, and it would make sense for Prince Daemon to have companions from the Stepstones and Summer Isles. There's lots of opportunities there for inclusion without messing with the pureblood Targaryens.

@SerKurtWagner - Thank you we finally see eye to eye, im more than happy with genuine black characters being introduced, very excited about it. I actually hope they give some of them the spotlight, that's true diversity and representation to me.

Hurm. Could be cool for what it is, but I'm really not sure I need to watch any prequel. The Targaryan history isn't quite as pointless now as anything about the White Walkers would be, but still...

Hope this is an anthology series...season 1 = 300 years before GoT, season 2 = 250 years before GoT, and so on. The series could end with the death of Rhaegar and the sack of kings landing.
