GAME OF THRONES Season 8 Airs In The "First Half" Of Next Year; Spinoff Wont Begin Shooting Until 2019

We finally have an update on when fans can expect to see the final season of HBO's Game of Thrones, and while we still have quite a while to wait, it won't be late next year as previously rumored...

It's been a while since we had any updates on the highly-anticipated final season of Game of Thrones, but now thanks to HBO’s programming president Casey Bloys (via EW) we have some idea of when we can expect to see the last 6 episodes of the fantasy drama series.

While speaking at the Television Critics Association’s press tour in Beverly Hills today, Bloys confirmed that the show would return in early 2019, which will be great news for those worried about the recent rumors that we wouldn't see Jon, Dany, Tyrion and co. until later next year.

No specific date was given, but the previous seasons have all aired late March or April, so around then is probably a safe bet.

Bloys also revealed that the spinoff prequel series won't begin shooting until 2019. Previous reports indicated that it would be sooner, but it seems a director still hasn't been nailed down, yet alone a cast.

I'm surprised they'll be shooting the spin-off(s) in 2019.

@CurlyBill - No one should get the Iron Throne. It is the one ring of the series and is symbolic of the corruptive power of ambition. The only right ending would be for it to be melted down and no one rules over all seven kingdoms.

Excited for the last season. Season 7 was easily the weakest of the series so far due to pacing issues with the shorter episode count and the writers not knowing how to conclude certain character arcs (they did you wrong, Littlefinger). However, I think they've got a setup for a great conclusion and even though it's only 6 episodes, apparently they will all be "movie length" according to the showrunners, meaning likely 1 1/2 hours an episode (hopefully). I still wish they had just gone for ten episodes, but longer runtimes should help the pacing.

Bring it on!

@MrDandy - I thought Season 7 was better than Season 6, minus the best 2 episodes of the entire series (Episode 6 and 7).

Not sure why season 7 has gotten so much hate? I thought Littlefingers end was great and it came in the form of the one scenario he could never see. And the pacing of the season was perfect. No one needs to see people traveling down the King's road or shit like that (looking at Sam and Gilly's traveling adventures in season 6).

@capcyclopsftw - I thought season 6 was great. I throughly enjoyed it. One of my favorite seasons.

Littlefingers end was the worst thing in the series. One of the most interesting characters responsible for the inciting incident of the series, the death of Jon Ares, getting Ned Stark arrested and leading to the War of the Five Kings, assassinating Joffery and more, and what ends him? A plan so stupid that it is unraveled by the two sisters (gasp!) talking to one another for five seconds. What exactly was his end goal there? What was his end goal overall? We'll never know because the writers didn't know and couldn't figure out what to do with him. So they just offed him.

@MrDandy - That was kind of the beauty in it though...He imagine ever scenario out there except this woman whom he thought was his "protege" turning on him. They gave subtle hints throughout the season that he was out of his element and that he couldn't turn the stubborn north. It also showed a lot of Sansa's growth and what she has learned from him. Also Arya and what she has learned about deception. I thought it was great, to each their own.

@bropous @MrDandy - This has also been the grandest story ever told on TV.

I was re-watching season 7 lately and realized just how much of a journey these characters have taken. If you take it at 1 season at a time, it doesn't seem like that but taking it in as a series and it's beautifully highlighted in the exchange between Jon and Tyrion when they first see each other.

@capcyclopsftw - It made him into an idiot, which he never was before. That plan would have only ever worked if the two girls NEVER talked to one another because as soon as they did, it was over for him.

That is a moron scheme and there is no excuse for how lazy the writing was.

@capcyclopsftw - And don't get me wrong. I don't hate season 7. Honestly I don't think Game of Thrones has an outright bad season. They're all pretty damn good, but given the high bar, season 7 sits the lowest for me with the Littlefinger arc of that season being the best example of the writers having a stumble in bringing the many threads together at the conclusion and having to cut a few to simplify things.
