GAME OF THRONES Series Finale Images Focus On Former Allies Who Are Now On A Collision Course

HBO is clearly determined to keep fans in the dark as much as possible when it comes to the series finale of Game of Thrones, as the network has only released two promo stills for Sunday's episode...

This Sunday, what has arguably become the most popular TV series of all time will come to an end with an extra-long episode that's sure to stir up just as much controversy as the penultimate installment.

After the incendiary (in more ways that one) events of "The Bells," Daenerys prepares to take her place on the Iron Throne - but not all of her followers are happy about it. Jon Snow and Tyrion Lannister looked on in horror as the once benevolent Queen of Dragons unleashed a fiery doom on the denizens of King's Landing, and there's a very good chance that one or both of them will attempt to put an end to her reign before it begins.

In these new promo stills, we see Dany about to address her army, and a distraught-looking Tyrion. Has he just been informed of his brother Jaime's death, perhaps?

For a recap of what went down in last week's episode of Game of Thrones and which characters we lost, read on.

Qyburn

Okay, so Qyburn couldn't really be described as a major character, but he was a significant player in the game, having provided Cersei with many of the tools she needed to maintain her power - The Mountain included.

It was that undead monstrosity that ultimately proved to be Qyburn's undoing, as The Hand of The Queen had his head crushed against a stone in a Frankenstein-like monster kills creator moment. Good riddance!

Varys

game-of-thrones-8x05-13

Melisandre predicted Vary's death two seasons ago, and once The Spider decided to hitch his wagon to the Jon Snow train, his fate was sealed.

When Tyrion, who still believes in Dany despite his doubts, informs his Queen that his old friend has betrayed her, she wastes no time in ordering Drogon to burn him alive.

Varys has been a fan-favorite since season 1, and even though he's done some pretty heinous stuff himself over the years in service of the realm, it was tough to see him go - especially when he was in the right!

Euron Greyjoy

game-of-thrones-8x05-20

Euron survived the incineration of his fleet, and made his way to shore just in time to see Jaime Lannister en route to Cersei. Greyjoy, probably realizing that all is lost anyway, decides to goad The Kingslayer into a fight, and a fight he gets.

Jaime is not the swordsman he once was, and he's dealing with a formidable opponent. The Iron Islander manages to stab Lannister twice (essentially killing him), but Jaime ultimately gains the upper hand (no pun) and runs his sword right through the demented pirate.

Euron bleeds out on the rocks, content in the knowledge that he was the man that killed Jaime Lannister.

The Hound and The Mountain

game-of-thrones-8x05-17

We lost one of the most popular characters on the show last night, but at least he went out doing the one thing that would make him truly happy: killing his horrible bastard of a brother.

The "Clegane Bowl" is something fans have been looking forward to for a long time, and last night delivered a brutal scrap between Gregor 'The Mountain' Clegane and Sandor 'The Hound' Clegane. Realizing that his big brother was practically unkillable, The Hound decided to sacrifice himself to put an end to him, charging The Mountain through the crumbling stairwell to a fiery doom below.

Sad to see The Hound go, but he did get to share one final moment of genuine tenderness with Arya before the end.

Jaime Lannister

game-of-thrones-8x05-19

Like the Clegane boys, Jaime and Cersei Lannister went out together, but these characters are far too big to share the spotlight.

Last week, The Kingslayer had seemingly decided to settle down at Winterfell with Brienne, but hearing the news of his sister's imminent execution prompted him to return to King's Landing. Many fans assumed he was actually going to kill her himself, but it turns out he really was attempting to save her.

After being captured by Dany's men, The Kingslayer is freed by Tyrion only to wind up in a sword-fight with Euron. Mortally wounded, he finally makes it to Cersei's side, and comforts his sister/lover as both are (seemingly) crushed to death by the falling debris.

Cersei Lannister

game-of-thrones-8x05-2

When Cerei was a child, a witch named Maggy the Frog shared a prophecy that the young Lannister girl would be killed by the "Valonqar" (little brother), and that is what happened... kinda.

While Jamie didn't actually murder his sister, he did inadvertently lead her to her death beneath King's Landing while they were attempting to escape. In her final moments, Cersei shows vulnerability for the first time since the Walk of Shame, and maybe even a bit of regret.

Some fans were disappointed to see the woman that had emerged as the show's big bad killed off in this way, but, really, it was in keeping with Cersei and Jamie's arcs from the beginning. Also, we appear to have a new big bad now!

@knocturnalzen10 - its hard to imagine that D&D blew this season off because they wanted to get focused on STAR WARS they put a lot of themselves into this show I imagine so hard to believe they just shat the bed but if the leaks are true then why I wlll be super let down. not dexter level but right there.
like I said its hard for long running shows to have great finales I had mentioned a few the other day... the office/New Girl I forgot to mention I felt like House really nailed its finale.

@WakandanQueen - its amazing how her original 8000 unsullied still appear to be a massive group even though you've seen a lot of casualties.

@knighted - So true. She started with 8K. Take away the half they said died at Winterfell. Then take away the ones lost attacking Casterly Rock, murdered by the Harpy and killed by the Iron Fleet. There should be a LOT less than we see in that pic.

I suppose the season finale will be disappointing. Or epic. I don't know. One of those.

Arya is the chambermaid character of GOT per GRRM that D&D have created. So sad :(

It's like Abraham Lincoln burned all the slaves in the fields alive to win the civil war. I really feel sorry for those who named their babies Daenerys...

@gulducati - Think about it, D&D takes a character that is so beloved by fans by building her up as a hero character for 95% of the show, people name their children after her and the writers know this as it has been widely reported. The writer have a responsibility to not trash their character just for shock value and subverted expectations when they wrote her completely different for much of the show. This just tells you how bad of writers they are. Imagine if Lucas had Luke Skywalker start murdering the Ewoks and women and children at the end of Return of the Jedi. This is what D&D did to Danereys in essence. The shat on her character. They ruined a once great show. What was the point of Jon returning form the dead, just to kill Danerys, that's it? Horrid writing and now we can look forward to more if the garbage in Star Wars in a few years. Disney needs to cut their F up and find new people do do the next movies.

@Deagle -

Anyone who named their daughters Khaleesi or Danaerys should have known better. She's always been off-kilter and has displayed many, many signs over the years that she would be the Mad Queen.
I've always thought it was odd everyone praised her so much, questioning if I had been watching the same show as them.

This was not an overnight transformation, it was a slow... burn 😉.
She has been bending since s01e01 and she finally snapped.

@SKetCH -
From the start she always intended to slaughter everyone in Kings Landing - but the writers pandered to the 'strong female' crowd and ignored laying a lot of the ground work revealing her as evil.

She did not snap, she has been a controlling manipulative mass murderer from the start.
