GAME OF THRONES Showrunners Wish They'd Done ONE Thing Differently... But It's Nothing You'll Expect

How many things would you change about HBO's Game of Thrones if you had the chance? Showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss wish they'd done one thing differently...

We're sure there are numerous things Game of Thrones fans would have changed about the series, but the showrunners only have one, and it is definitely nothing you'll expect.

HBO's fantasy drama series became a worldwide phenomenon over the course of its 8-season run, with millions of people around the world tuning in every week to catch up with their favorite characters - and find out if they'd make it to the end credits.

As the show progressed, however, a lot of viewers felt that the quality began to dip, and by the time the much-discussed final season rolled around, it's probably fair to say that the majority of fans had some major issues with how the story was playing out.

The most heavily-criticized elements were almost certainly Daenerys Targaryen's heel turn and subsequent death at the hands of Jon Snow and Bran Stark ending up on the Iron Throne, but there were numerous smaller issues with specific character arcs and the overall plot.

During a new interview with THR, David Benioff and Dan Weiss were asked if there's anything they wish they'd done differently with the show. There was one thing... but you will never guess what it is.

“One thing I know I wish we could have done is there’s the character Mord the Jailer,” Benioff said. “It was a mistake not bringing Mord the Jailer back into it,” Weiss adds. “We always talked about doing it.”

“And we had the scene for it. There’s a scene set in a tavern. Was it Brienne or The Hound?” Weiss continued. “But we realized too late that Mord could have owned the tavern. We could have had that actor in the background acting exactly the way he did as a jailer, except now as a small-business owner. It was just such an obvious, no-brainer, day-after idea.”

Just in case you don't recall Mord, he was the brutish jailer who tormented Tyrion in the Sky Cells in season one. "The Imp" promised to reward him if he took a message to Lady Arryn, which he did, and Tyrion tossed him a bag of gold as he was leaving ("a Lannister always pays his debts").

While bringing Mord back for this scene does sound like it would have been fun, we find it hard to believe this would be the only thing Weiss and Benioff would change. Then again, it's hardly surprising that they didn't bring up anything more substantial, essentially admitting that they made mistakes with the narrative.

You can check out the scene in question in the player below.

"Nine noble families fight for control over the lands of Westeros, while an ancient enemy returns after being dormant for a millennia."

@EgoEgor - I'd say so.

I know this is a cheeky comment, but there were many book characters that were missed in the show. Young Aegon, Patchface, multiple Greyjoys, Strong Belwas, Lady Stoneheart, multiple Martells, Coldhands (although they kind of adapted him in a way).

I really hope Martin finishes the books because the first five are amazing.

@mountainman - I really don't see him finishing the book. It's a shame but due to all the projects he is wrapped up in, his age, and just the lack of passion of finishing just seems to prevent him from continuing imo.

@EZBeast - I don’t expect it either I just hope for it. If he doesn’t, I really hope Joe Abercrombie can finish it. Of current fantasy authors, he has the most similar writing style to Martin.

@mountainman - I wondered last week Martin simply told his publisher "I'll finish the books, but you can't release them until after I'm gone."

@mountainman - I think he already has, but is just keeping them until he dies and that becomes treasure hunt. All jokes aside I think he once said he actually has finished them, but is making re-writes etc, but it's slow, because he is making other books at the same time.

So instead of Jon admitting he killed Daenerys and getting screwed over for it, all he had to do was tell everyone she rode away on her dragon, since the dragon took her body anyway.

@NGFB - yeah, logic and GoT S8? That doesn't really track

@NGFB - nah lying will go against his character. he took after his step dad ned stark and is 1 of the only few honorable people on the show. everyone who went back on their words died. seems like the old or new gods all punished those who broke their oath/word.

loyalty and oathkeepers get no reward in this show lol

@mastakilla39 - I agree, it is within his character to tell the truth. It's also within his siblings character to tell him to come back when Grey Worm left. He's going to die to butterflies anyway

@Evansly - That actually made me laugh when Grey Worm told the Unsullied they were going to Naath. GOT S8's logic.

@bobevanz - seeing as their only big project since GoT was gemini man they ain't ever getting picked up by disney again. I bet their new upcoming scifi show also fails big time.

With the way they rushed the last two seasons, they should be flipping burgers. Bastards..
RegularPoochie
RegularPoochie - 1/19/2024, 3:52 PM
@narrow290 - well they didn't have any real source material after season 5, so just throw shit on the wall and see what sticks, lol.

@RegularPoochie - The story was fine imo it just needed more time to be fleshed out. The events themselves would have been much, much better if they would’ve slowed the pace. Enough shit happened in the last two seasons to actually make 4 or 5 seasons

As if I needed more reasons to dislike these hacks, they actually joke about how they screwed over the franchise with that statement. Absolute chuds.
