GAME OF THRONES Spinoff HOUSE OF THE DRAGON Rumored To Be Casting Its Targaryen Leads

Game of Thrones ended after eight seasons, and for many fans, HBO dropped the ball on how things wrapped up for the heroes and villains of Westeros. The series was still a ratings hit, of course, so the cable network moving forward with a spinoff series, titled House of the Dragon, is no great surprise.

Very little is known about the show beyond the fact that it will delve into the history of House Targaryen and take place 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones. Now, though, new casting rumours indicate that the series is hunting for two female leads.

The first is Rhaenyra Targaryen (who will need to be in her late 20s), while the second is Alicent Hightower (who will be slightly older). Both of these characters have been mentioned by author George R.R. Martin in his series of A Song of Ice and Fire novels, and they shed a little more light on what we can expect from these two key characters in the spinoff series.

One of the most beautiful women in Westeros, Rhaenyra attempts to usurp the Iron Throne from her brother Aegon II in the war known as the Dance of Dragons. Alicent, meanwhile, is Rhaenyra's step-mother and has a bitter rivalry with her.

Martin co-created the series with Ryan Condal, and it's believed that the ten-episode House of the Dragon will begin airing in 2022 (a date which could be pushed back due to COVID-19).

What are your thoughts on these latest details about the show?

I really am trying to get excited about this but the stain that was the later half of S7 and ALL of S8 really makes it difficult. I guess I'll wait to see who they cast to get any real reaction.

I can't believe this franchise just petered out the way it did. It could have been this generation's Star Wars.

OMG YES!
Aegon I Targaryen and his two sisters! That is what I HOPE we get to see some of in HOTD (not all, but some).

This was always the series that I wanted. Going back as far as the mid seasons of GOT. Recall always banging that drum for a Dragon Prequel.

And then...BOOM! GRRMartin dropped F&B. Now we are even closer to getting the series that is needed.

Game Of Thrones was great when they had books they could adapt from. When they had to make it up as they went a long that's when the show suffered.

@marvel72 - season 6 was pretty damn good but was still going of plot threads developed by George RR Martin. I would say it more suffered because they rushed the last 13 episodes (what should have been 3 full season) because the show runners were ready to move on.

@marvel72 - They abandoned the books long before they ran out of content, though.

Will there be any mainstream interest in this now, from non-fans? With fans abandoning the series in droves after the disastrous s08, what's the point.

For me, Amazon's 'Second Age' holds more interest.

Honestly, this show irritates me more than anything. The ending to Game of Thrones was mostly ruined because it was rushed, and instead of taking their time to end one of the biggest shows in history, they instead fumble the ending and instead push out a whole new show. Boooo!

Get your facts straight, Rhaenyra was named by her father to be his heir. Alicent and her father hid the fact that he died and crowned Alicent's own son Aegon II king to maintain House Hightower's power and control in Westeros.
