In an interview with EW, Martin discusses the journey Game Of Thrones has gone on to make it from page to screen. In the following excerpts the author speaks about the changes that were made from the source material, casting, and why HBO was always the only home for the series.

On the reason he began the books after working as a screen writer forst..

“I had worked in Hollywood myself for about 10 years, from the late ’80s to the ’90s. I’d been on the staff of The Twilight Zone and Beauty and the Beast. All of my first drafts tended to be too big or too expensive. I always hated the process of having to cut.”

“I said, ‘I’m sick of this, I’m going to write something that’s as big as I want it to be, and it’s going to have a cast of characters that go into the thousands, and I’m going to have huge castles, and battles, and dragons.”

The books are pretty graphic. There is a very good reason why we will be seeing them make the transition to the small screen via HBO..

I knew it couldn’t be done as a network television series. It’s too adult. The level of sex and violence would never have gone through. I said, “The one way this could be done is by HBO.” And when I met with David and Dan, we had the same ideas. When I left, I thought I was in good hands.

The show has a terrific cast, with Sean Bean leading as Ned Stark. How did all of that come about?..

Sean Bean [as "King's Hand" Sir Eddard Stark] and Peter Dinklage [as the queen's trouble-making "imp" brother, Tyrion Lannister] were our first choices. It’s amazing we were able to get them.

And finally, on the changes made in the adaptation process. Something many fans obsess over..

There are changes, but I’m not sure how many of them are important. Like in the sets. The High Hall in the Eyrie, the one I described was long and rectangular with columns, and the one they built is round with curving staircases up. I had the Moon Door in the wall; they had the Moon Door in the floor. I know they tried, but they were not able to do the purple eyes for the Targaryens. You can do colored contact lenses, but that’s difficult for the actors and doesn’t always look right anyway. I have some great fans, but some of them get a little obsessive about things like that and are going to go crazy. But I’ve worked in Hollywood too long to worry about things like that. I’ve been on the other side of the process.

Pity, I actually would have liked the purple eyed Targaryens! But what can ya do. The show looks fantastic. If you haven't seen the first 14 minute preview check it out Here. Game Of Thrones premiers April 17th on HBO

I'm so glad someone else on this site is following this series! I've been obsessing over it since I heard it was going to be made back in 07. My favorite book series by far and it's going to be an HBO show! Just two long weeks to go..

haha, I reckon that a fan made that for him. So I'm just finishing up A Clash Of Kings and want the third book NOW! I'm really tempted to check for spoilers.

DON'T DO IT ROR. The third one is the best in my opinion and you will really destroy the story for yourself.

Don't spoil it. I agree book 3 is the best. Book 4 was my least favorite. I'm hoping 5 will bring it all back to the greatness I remember.

I'm going to have to agree with the popular opinion - Storm of Swords is the best book in the series to date. I will be upset if *gods forbid* the series gets cancelled after the first season. Yeah, okay, it's my favorite book series ever but atleast I got this one season out of it. I can handle that. But! If it gets cancelled after season 2 I'm gonna lose my shit. Full out batshit crazy. You can't give me 1 and 2 and NOT give me 3!?!? That's how good of a book we're talking.

Now, all that being said, I am of course hoping against hope for all 7 (if not more) seasons!

A Storm of Swords is definitely the most epic of the 4 so far and has so many twists and turns, its simply fantastic. the first and second are close behind it in greatness. Feast wasnt bad, but it feels like too much time is spent in set up and introducing new stuff, which is all necessary, it just doesnt leave you wowed. also i didnt like the whole split novel thing.

ror, do not read spoilers, when you read Storm it will all be worth the wait and the thousands of pages u will had to read, trust me!

After watching that preview Sunday night, I can't see how this series doesn't make it, BUT Rome didn't get to Season 3 either, so go figure.

I hope they send the actors out to do the rounds on the talk shows to hype this show up.

DO NOT READ THE SPOILERS! THEY'RE BIG ONES

lol its crazy i picked up the hobbit and read it after hearing last year they were making the movie(wich got delayed a million times but they are finally filming)
so of course never reading the lord of the rings trilogy i figured hey why not and read all 3 in less than a week...
my brother saw me reading the end of return of the king and suggested i take a look at this ice and fire series since he figured i liked that high fantasy stuff...
by the time i got halfway through book 1 i was hooked.

literally the day i finished the book i was sitting at home watching something or other on hbo , and all of a sudden these crows and such came on and i was floored to see the first tease of game of thrones the series!!!

i was sooo hype i lost my sh@t, and called my brother up like a 5 year old kid on christmas after opening up a much craved for present...
needless to say i am stoked beyond what i thought possible... cannot wait for this show... the first fifteen had me on the edge of my seat and begging for more!!!

TBH I wouldnt be surprised if it got cancelled, not due to being bad, but because of my shit luck. Same thing happened with Deadwood and Carnivale. Both, gone before their time.

The first Season is ten episodes and it will be the first book (although they have cast Hot Pie,who doesn't actually show up until book 2)

The casting of Peter Dinklege as Tyrion is absolutely perfect -- a great "little person" actor for what is probably the best, most complex "little person" character ever. The clips I have seen appear that he has nailed the role.

The biggest change I see is in the ages of many of the young characters. Robb Stark, Jon Snow, Theon Grayjoy, Sansa Stark, Danerys and others have been made older than they were in the books. Their age had a lot to do with the story, but they do a lot of "adult" things that would be difficult with actors of the proper age.
