HOUSE OF THE DRAGON: Alicent Makes A Fateful Move In The New Preview For Episode 9; "The Green Council"

With only two episodes left, we're swiftly approaching the Dance of the Dragons and next week's installment will finally see Alicent make a move that will have devastating consequences for House Targaryen.

"Have you ever imagined yourself on the Iron Throne?"

With King Viserys (Paddy Considine) finally succumbing to his decades-long illness, the Dance of the Dragons is nearly here and it looks like next week's installment will finally have Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) make the fateful decision that will ultimately kickstart the long-awaited Targaryen Civil War and essentially damn every party involved.

As the promo reveals, we'll see Alicent make an executive decision - with her father Otto (Rhys Ifans) and Criston Cole's (Fabien Frankel) blessing - to place her eldest son Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney) on the Iron Throne, under the questionable belief that it was Viserys last wish. She'll also be moving quickly, as she attempts to give him the crown before word reaches Dragonstone.

No major spoilers here on what will happen in the immediate aftermath, but it's safe to say that Rhaenyra (Emma D'Arcy) and Daemon (Matt Smith), are going to be less than thrilled when they learn of the treacherous decision. So, gear up everyone, it's time for war!

Check out the new preview for episode nine, titled "The Green Council," below:

Season One features Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Fabien Frankel, Sonoya Mizuno, and Rhys Ifans, with Milly Alcock, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Emily Carey, Harry Collett, Ryan Corr, Tom Glynn-Carney, Jefferson Hall, David Horovitch, Wil Johnson, John Macmillan, Graham McTavish, Ewan Mitchell, Theo Nate, Matthew Needham, Bill Paterson, Phia Saban, Gavin Spokes, and Savannah Steyn.

Based on George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood,” the series, set 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones,” tells the story of House Targaryen.

Last nights episode did a good enough job making it seem like Alicent was starting to fall in line behind Rhaenyra…Felt like the two of them finally had a moment to let the walls down and begin reconciling…Alicent even shook her head ~no~ to Aemond when he was going on about his nephews being bastards, and admonished him after he was finished…

If not for Viserys losing it there at the end in clearly thinking he was talking to his daughter about the prophecy of Aegon I she tried discussing with him in his chamber the previous night…Horrible timing considering the happiness the family was legitimately starting to share during that nights dinner…

It shows that it’s not “false pretense” for Alicent in placing her son on the throne, but rather her full belief that Viserys was telling her to do just that…A misunderstanding that will lead to full blown war unfortunately..,

@vegetaray - misunderstanding yes. But Alicent is no robot. She knew she was listening to the word of a dying man in pain. And up until that point, not once did he ever say her children would be heirs. She's taking advantage and letting her emotions run proceedings; damn the repercussions

@Vigor - That was my initial impression as well…But when you take into account that she doesn’t know the prophecy, or at least not that we’ve been shown, we have to assume she’s taking the word of Viserys on his literal death bed to mean he wants Aegon II to sit the throne…

Poor guy was just in the final throws of his life thinking he was talking to his daughter trying to reassure her that her ruling was his wish for her…Just as she’d asked him the night prior…He validated her at a time where Alicent seemed to be opening up to mend things as Viserys actually wanted them…Now it’s war…So heartbreaking…

@vegetaray - tragic story all around

@vegetaray - she definitely brlieved it. Whether she's deluding herself or not, it's clear from Viserys convo with young Rheanyra that the Song of Ice and Fire is solely for the Targeryan heirs to the Iron Throne. It's not info many would have access to

@vegetaray - Alicent's self-righteousness is her character flaw. Allowing for her to hear the prophecy misinterpreted allows for more nuance and complexity to the character rather than making her another power hungry monarch. But more of a zealot that thinks she is on the side of what is good for her and the realm.

@Kumkani - I like Viserys, but that was a Vhagar-sized L at the end.

@Fares - alternatively, Alicent could just not act based on the dying words of a barely conscious man in pain who had his brains eaten away by rot, but yeah, this is the mother of all misunderstandings to say the least.
Fares
Fares - 10/10/2022, 11:17 AM
@Spidey91 - She'd be forgiven for not knowing the prophecy and its significance to the king's chosen heir, but yeah I'd be careful to interpret the words of that man in any way before making sure of his mental state when he said them.

I haven’t watched this or GoT. I know this show is a prequel but do you to watch GoT to understand aspects of this show?
Fares
Fares - 10/10/2022, 10:45 AM
@TheSuperMex - The show doesn't really take it's time to fully explain the setting, including the geography, different families (except for the major ones), etc. I don't think it's difficult to understand what's going on and enjoy each episode for what it is, but of course, you'll enjoy it much more with all the background knowledge of GoT. Even though the last GoT season is a dud in the eyes of many, I think the first few season are still worth experiencing.

@TheSuperMex -

You see alot of Easter eggs and family connections but you can still start with house of the dragon.

@Doomsday8888 - I am too, but I can't help but feel it has been slightly too slow. I miss some of the action a tiddies from GOT. Writing has been great though and acting is top notch. Even the kids are good. Usually child actors take me out of whatever they are in, but these kids have been really good.

Aemond looks like a warped version of Daemon and given how their story goes in the books, I think the casting is on point.

@Ojeet78 - For sure…Casting is great…Aemond even acts like Daemon…Very headstrong and impulsive…Plus the long stares the keep giving each other…It’s going to be crazy when what goes down, eventually goes down…

I can see one miscommunication causing trouble but now twice? Seems like it's just their go to thing now to cause strife.
Spidey91
Spidey91 - 10/10/2022, 1:22 PM
@CplHicks - I think that criticism would be more valid if this wasn't a dark fantasy series, their world doesn't operate in the same way ours does. so yeah, while miscommunication seems like an easy way to get cheap drama and get the plot moving, this is also the same world where you get your head swiftly removed from your shoulders if you dare to talk sh*t to the wrong person. these guys live and usually die by the blade, I'm not surprised they aren't the "talk things out" kinda people.

Every show should aspire to be house of the dragon. Great writing and no need for action scenes when the drama is so juicy 🤝🙂💪🔥

I've felt the show is okay so far, some good moments and those are mainly good performances from certain actors but it's all way too rushed with the constant time jumps and the ageing of certain characters is all off

Aemond now looks double the age and size of any other character, despite being the same age/younger than most of them. including Aegon who's meant to be 5 years older

Rhaenyra, Daemon and Criston Cole haven't aged a day
vegetaray
vegetaray - 10/10/2022, 1:25 PM
@JakeyChappers - I feel like they kind of rushed the story via these time jumps because they were being assured they’d get additional seasons 🤷‍♂️…Especially with the current execs running the show behind the scenes…
Ojeet78
Ojeet78 - 10/10/2022, 1:38 PM
@JakeyChappers - Agreed. the time jumps between episodes instead of seasons has been quite jarring and that too for selective members of the cast. Given how fast they are burning through the material in the book, the show will last only another season, I guess. I wonder if they are solely reliant on Martin's words given how badly season 08 of GOT was received. This show could do with some fillers and side quests to pad it out for a full season before rapid time jumps.
Chappers
Chappers - 10/10/2022, 1:43 PM
@Ojeet78 - Jarring is spot on, each episode for the last few weeks I have to figure out who all of the kids are again, which is confusing enough already considering how many there are and how similar the names can be, not to mention them all using names of ancestors so any time someone references "Viserys, Aegon or Aemond" in conversation I have to quickly verify which one they mean

This show did the impossible for me: make me ignore the hurt GOT season 8 did to me, and make me came about GOT again.

It is that good. And now we’re getting to an epic event that will probably be some of the best visuals and action ever put on TV in Dance of the Dragons and Battle Above God’s Eye.

Cannot wait.
