HOUSE OF THE DRAGON Composer Explains Why The Prequel Series Uses GAME OF THRONES' Theme Song

House of the Dragon begins each episode with the same theme once used by Game of Thrones...the question is, why? Well, composer Ramin Djawadi has now explained why both shows share that piece of music.

Game of Thrones' opening credits always gave fans something to talk about, primarily because they would usually change to reflect what was happening in the show. There was a lot of excitement about what House of the Dragon would deliver on that front, and while the credits are visually impressive, viewers were shocked to hear the show use the exact same theme as its predecessor!

Composer Ramin Djawadi has lent his talents to both shows, and while some were quick to dismiss the decision to keep the same music as laziness, there is a good reason for them sharing the same theme.

"I think that’s a good example of tying back the old material with the new," he tells IGN (via SFFGazette.com). "As a franchise to just connect all of these stories together."

"In the original main title, we always looked at and thought of it as an overarching theme that connects all of the characters and the journey and the adventures of this universe. So we felt it would be appropriate to connect it with this main title theme again."

Of course, just because the main theme remains the same doesn't mean Djawadi isn't creating new music for the ambitious spinoff. "Melodically I’m starting completely from scratch, but sonically I’m drawing back from the original score," he explains. "There are certain sounds that I will use that I would have used with the Targaryens in the past."

It's a unique approach, but certainly not one that's negatively impacted House of the Dragon in any way. The events of this series are obviously closely tied to Game of Thrones, so certain sounds carrying over is no different to what we've seen from the Star Wars franchise as it's expanded in recent years across film, television, and video games.

We're intrigued to see what future spinoffs, prequels, and sequels have planned, but we'd be lying if we said that Game of Thrones doesn't generate a certain level of excitement each week with House of the Dragon!

What are your thoughts on both shows sharing the same theme? Let us know in the comments section.

First time i heard of him was the Iron Man soundtrack. Mk2 is still one of my favourite MCU sounds.

I have zero issues them using GoT theme song in the opening credits, I actually like it!

It is a tapestry. I don't see an issue with using GOT theme. I don't see people complaining about Star Wars themes and Star Trek themes that have been used for decades. People will find nothing to bitch about. Just enjoy the damn show or stop watching! too easy!

"We made the defining opening song perhaps ever for TV and didn't want to try and beat it." I understand it, but I would have respected them more if they had tried. They would have failed, but they would have tried.

Rings of Power tried to take on GoT, and I love the opening they came up with. I don't think it really comes close but what can you do. The idea of the map providing so much exposition right there on the screen, the sun being inside the whole thing, the music, the visuals. It's just one of the top live action TV openings ever, especially as most stuff that isn't HBO doesn't even bother any more.

what song did Star Wars use for their prequels?

I think it was lazy. They should have done more to seperate them selves. They could have even come up with something better and more memorable.

It was a lose-lose situation. It would have been inevitably seen as inferior to the original, especially with the nostalgia effect.

It makes sense to establish a franchise theme. Most of the big ones have them,

007, Jurassic Park, Jaws films, Star Wars, LOTR, Batman 1989,
they’ve all had sequels or spinoffs that often reuse the original’s main theme.

I would’ve tweaked it a bit to make it stand on its own, but understand why he chose not to

I don't feel like enough people talk about Ramin Djawadi's brilliance. That man, in tandem with the vfx department, single-handedly carried the final season of Game of Thrones.

But when it comes to House of The Dragon, I'm still waiting to hear something special. It's been pretty good, but not on the level of his past gems.

I'd love to see him work more in movies though. His Iron Man and Pacific Rim scores were awesome.
