HOUSE OF THE DRAGON Season 2 Finale Promo Promises Plenty Of Fire And Blood - SPOILERS

This week's penultimate season 2 episode of House of the Dragon, "The Red Sowing," finally gave Team Black the advantage in the Targaryen civil war, and if the teaser for next Sunday's finale is any indication, the Dance of the Dragons is going to be taken to another level of devastation as more fire-breathing beasts join the fray.

Spoilers follow.

After Seasmoke claimed Addam of Hull as his rider in the closing moments of last week's episode, Rhaenyra – with some convincing from Mysaria – decides to look for dragonriders among the lowborn, leading to an "army of bastards" arriving to Dragonstone in a perilous attempt to claim the second-largest dragon alive, Vermithor.

The notoriously volatile creature burns/devours most of the wannabes, but Hugh Hammer stands his ground and ultimately claims the dragon, with Ulf the White stumbling right into Silverwing's path and (luckily) managing to follow suit.

The episode concludes with Ulf and Silverwing drawing Aemond and Vhagar out of King's Landing, but as they approach Dragonstone, the Prince Regent senses danger and retreats while Rhaenyra watches on surrounded by dragons with a look of confidence on her face.

The season finale promo doesn't give much away, but it seems clear that we are going to get more dragon vs. dragon action, and quite possibly at least one more main character death - although those anticipating any major showdowns (Daemon vs. Aemond for example) might be disappointed, as the show will return for at least one more season.

Check out the teaser below, and let us know how you think the episode will play out in the comments section.

"The prequel series finds the Targaryen dynasty at the absolute apex of its power, with more than 15 dragons under their yoke. Most empires—real and imagined—crumble from such heights. In the case of the Targaryens, their slow fall begins almost 193 years before the events of Game of Thrones, when King Viserys Targaryen breaks with a century of tradition by naming his daughter Rhaenyra heir to the Iron Throne. But when Viserys later fathers a son, the court is shocked when Rhaenyra retains her status as his heir, and seeds of division sow friction across the realm."

House of the Dragon season 2 sees Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Eve Best, Steve Toussaint, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Tom Glynn-Carney, Sonoya Mizuno, and Rhys Ifans reprise their respective roles. Additional returning cast includes Harry Collett, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Phia Saban, Jefferson Hall, and Matthew Needham.

The directors for the new season are Alan Taylor (Episodes 1 & 4), Clare Kilner (Episodes 2 & 5), Geeta Patel (Episodes 3 & 8), Andrij Parekh (Episode 6), and Loni Peristere (Episode 7).

@IronGenesis -

I actually think it’s better they keep it relatively short.

When they drag out the story sometimes it bogs down the writing and anticipation.

Specially nowadays that seasons take 2 to 3 years to complete.

@MisterDoctor217 - Seasons dont take 2 or 3 years. Wasnt this completeled pretty quickly?
Taonrey
Taonrey - 7/30/2024, 1:17 AM
@IronGenesis - definitely doesn’t, I’d argue 4 seasons would be pushing it. End it in 3 and move on to a different time

@TheRogue - I mean… s1 came out in 2022 and it’s 2024, so he was right that it takes 2 to 3 years

@MisterDoctor217 - I’ve enjoyed this season but even this one they were dragging out the storyline(just look at the Daemon stuff), 3 season is good enough, definitely if they do 12 episodes in season 3, dance of dragons only last 2 years in the book

@Taonrey - Thats one year taonery

@Taonrey -

Yes the Daemon Stuff was really dragged out, and this season definitely has some pacing issues so I agree fully , do 3 or 4 season but taking it to 5 is just pushing it

@TheRogue -

Well from August 2022 to June 2024 is almost 2 years.

But I think they’ll take even more time with the 3rd one probably

That ending felt dumb, like Rhaenys killing all those innocents in the dragon pit just to have a cool scene kinda dumb. Why would you risk losing one of your new dragons just to bait Aemond out only to then just to show off your new friends. Not only did she miss the chance to kill him there and potentially end the war there, she's now lost the element of surprise.

@HashTagSwagg - Rheanys is dead, I think you meant Rheanyra. The impression I got was that the dude got on and wasn’t really in control. I’m sure she would have preferred the element of surprise, and it’s unfortunately lost, but I doubt it was purposefully.

As for the killings, everyone went in knowing what could happen, none of it should have been a surprise. That was a lot of ppl and only 2 would have been chosen anyway. I for one was glad it played out as quickly as it did and they didn’t drag it out one by one. It was a bit of a setup episode, but a good one at that.

Now I’m just hyped about the wild dragon that’s lurking by the Vail, that one’s the biggest of all
HashTagSwagg
HashTagSwagg - 7/29/2024, 10:57 PM
@MuadDib - No, Rheanys was the one who killed those innocent people in season one and then acted as if she cared about collateral damage later on.
2 people would have been picked from those 2 dragon's, yes and some would have died, yes but just because Vermi rejected them, there was still a chance that the other dragons wouldn't. I get why they cut through it but it was still a dumb decision.

Also I'm pretty sure Sheepstealer is the one lurking by the Vail and Cannibal is the larger dragon.

McMurdo
McMurdo - 7/29/2024, 11:29 PM
@HashTagSwagg - she knew it would catch Aemond off guard and that Silverwing would get back before being attacked because Silverwing is simply much faster than Vhagar. And she doesn't want the element of surprise. She has Baela, Daemon, Jace, Hugh, Ulf, herself, and soon to be Rhaena against who.....Aemond and his younger sister and some estranged brother named Daeron whose dragon just started taking flight? Rhaenyra wanted Kings Landing's populace to know what was up and she wanted to instill fear in Aemond and make him think twice about his upcoming plans. Mission accomplished.
HashTagSwagg
HashTagSwagg - 7/29/2024, 11:38 PM
@McMurdo - He's the only real threat, she already won the small volk's favour earlier, taking out Aemond there would have been the smartest move as that would have practically ended the war with the least bloodshed.
whoknows
whoknows - 7/30/2024, 11:12 PM
@HashTagSwagg - because they didn’t bait aemond, Silverwing took Ulf on a joy ride, I doubt rhaenyra even k ow silver wing was claimed until someone spotted her flying out or flying back in. It’s a continued testament to humans not being able to control their dragons, especially these inexperienced rider. It didn’t end in doom and gloom so you don’t realize how bad it was that silver wing just took him there. Highly highly doubt that was to bait vhagar. At least rhaenyra would have put on dragon riding armor if she was preparing to fight. Plus the way ulf was reacting was like a teen on a joy ride
whoknows
whoknows - 7/30/2024, 11:17 PM
@McMurdo - I don’t think she sent ulf to do that, looks like silver wing just took him for a joy ride right out of the cave. Ulf doesn’t even look like he knows the danger. She wouldn’t send an experienced rider out with such a valuable asset without at least trying to coach him a bit. She could have easily lost a dragon to a Scorpion or vhagar. Plus she would have had to know vhagar wasn’t already flying around, which I doubt she would just know so Ulf is lucky that vhagar wasn’t already on guard, cuz he would have been dead if vhagar was already in the skies. No way rhaenyra would risk that. She probably didn’t even know silver wing got a new rider until she was sighted leaving the cave or sighted on the way back.

@whoknows - it was 100 % planned. She's out on a cliff with her dragons as they arrive. All intentional.

Why the hell did Rhaenyra make all the dragon seed stand out in the open in front of Vermithor like that? why not have them go out one at a time like they did in the last episode with her kingsguard guy?

why were her guards holding them back? Pi55 poor leadership skills.

Why did they have Hugh Hammer screaming at a dragon like hes season 8 Jon Snow?

aside from being visual eye candy that last scene with the avengers assesamble moment made no sense...what was her plan there?
whoknows
whoknows - 7/30/2024, 11:26 PM
@harryba11zack - he was roaring like a dragon, and the dragon had its fire in his breathe cued up until he roared “Come on.” Cuz Hugh was ready to die. It’s after he roared you saw the glow dissipate and the dragon making a friendly sound. The roar saved his life. Different dragons respect different things. And if they did it one by one, who would realistically go up there after hearing the dragon burnt another to the crisp. Think about it logistically. You gonna have all the ppl outside the dentist office while a patient is inside screaming. It’s like 30-40 bastards there, only 2 dragons to claim. If my 2 buddies infront goes before me and then they still ask me to come forward and test my might, I know at least one of my mates just died. You just wouldn’t get to test all 30 cuz a hand full or all would leave after hearing another get blazed and it would take a hell of a long time if you had them all lined up so far back they couldn’t hear, likely hood you could hear anyone screaming in that dragon lit from anywhere in the castle cuz you can always hear the dragons breathing and moving around while ppl in the castle are conversing, you can hear them below. And the guards holding them back, idk to say that’s piss poor leadership or a testament to how ruthless she truly is, doing this all in the name of the Gods she believed have now ordained her mission. Rhaenyra isn’t this all shining good morale hero and they are trying to remind us of that
