House of the Dragon won't hit HBO Max until a little later this year, but it sounds like plans are already being put in place for a second season. HBO has struggled to find ways to continue Game of Thrones after its divisive ending, with many planned prequels and spin-offs failing to materialise. However, this one managed to make it, and the network appears confident in its chances of success.

While no official announcements have been made, Redanian Intelligence (via SFFGazette.com) suggests House of the Dragon season 2 is already in development at the streaming service.

This isn't a huge surprise as HBO programming chief Casey Bloys previously said, "We tend to like to see how a show performs. If I were betting, I'd say there’s a pretty good shot that House of the Dragon will get a season two. But we tend to like things to air and give it some time. That said, on most shows, we’ll do preparation and put ourselves in a good position to move forward."

It's unclear when House of the Dragon's second batch of episodes would arrive, though we can't imagine it would be before 2024 unless the plan is for shooting to begin imminently.

Created by George R. R. Martin and Ryan J. Condal, House of the Dragon is based on Martin's 2018 novel Fire & Blood. Set two hundred years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series will chronicle the beginning of the end of House Targaryen, the events leading up to the Targaryen civil war, known as the "Dance of the Dragons", and the war itself, events fans are keen to see play out.

House of the Dragon is currently set to premiere on HBO Max on August 21.

I trust Miguel Sapochnik, also it'll be nice to see them in Dolby Vision.. that last season of GOT(when it premiered) really showed the problems with compressing 4k video into 1080, crushed the blacks to hell and back. I'd like to go back and watch those by means of that sweet 4k collection, but alas it was ruined lol.

Wow I don't understand this S2 greenlight before S1's release? Been watching Halo just for the hell of it and despite the mixed to terrible fan reviews, it also got a S2 before the 1st episode's release. Hopefully these shows don't get axed with a cliffhanger.

HoD is going to do well in general just because of the GoT brand but I wonder what the reception is going to be like. Similar to Walking Dead, is anyone really interested in the 5 spin off shows that are planned?

@mastakilla39 - Well, at the very least this show should do a lot to build interest in "9 Voyages/The Sea Snake" with Corlys being a main HOTD cast member and likely fan favorite.
