HOUSE OF THE DRAGON Spoilers: Viewers Turn Against Daemon After Heinous Season Finale Actions

Daemon Targaryen has always been a bit of a self-serving prick, but for many, his actions during last night's season finale of House of the Dragon took things too far. Spoilers follow...

It seems people are just now starting to realize that Daemon Targaryen is not a very nice person.

Despite his morally dubious and self-serving nature, Matt Smith's compelling take on the brother of the late King Viserys has emerged as one of the most popular characters in HBO's House of the Dragon, but his actions during last night's season finale lost him a lot of support.

When Rhaenys informs Rhaenyra of her father's death and her half-brother Aegon's usurping of the throne, Daemon urges immediate action. However, the Princess wishes to avoid war at all costs, reminding her husband of Viserys' prophecy regarding the "Prince who was promised" and the final stand against the emerging darkness in the North.

With that, an incensed Daemon sizes his wife by the throat and begins to choke her. It's not made explicitly clear what set him off, but Rhaenyra suggests it might have something to do with Viserys not trusting his brother enough to tell him about the prophecy.

As if this wasn't bad enough, Rhaenyra had been forced to deliver their stillborn child while Daemon talked strategy in the other room earlier in the episode.

We've seen Daemon do some pretty heinous stuff over the course of the season (including bashing his first wife's head in with a rock and seducing his underage niece), but for many, putting his hands on Rhaenyra was a step too far. This does mark a departure from the book, though nothing we've seen from the character in the series up until now suggests that he wouldn't be capable of this kind of act.

At any rate, if it's war Daemon wants, it's war he shall have, as Rhaenyra is sure-to-be fuelled by vengeance after learning of the death of her beloved son Lucerys (more here).

What did you guys make of Daemon's actions in the season finale of House of the Dragon? Be sure to share your thoughts down below.

Lmaooo it's their fault for romanticizing a character that's a giant asshole to begin with. Apparently they fine with him basically grooming his very young niece?

mastakilla39 - 10/24/2022, 9:10 PM
@Himura - If incest is fine, grooming is okay in the GoT's universe as long as you give them a kiss 1st.

@blitzkreg - Why be a Sue. You can be Mary, Stacy or anyone you want.. What does it have to do with books... I'm wondering

This is so silly, Martins world is filled to the brim with morally grey characters who do both good and evil. You can like Daemon but he has done evil horrid things. As my main man the menace once said

Did people not watch the other episodes or something, Daemon has never been a good person, that's why he's entertaining to watch. But the show has never tried to depict him as some sort of hero, far from it?

@Jayman627 -
A lot of the modern audience want a character to like and root for in a show as opposed to just witnessing the characters acting out the scene.

So rather than just witness a play happening before their eyes, they latch themselves onto characters and justify their actions. Breaking Bad exploited this idea with Walter White, his actions are horrific, yet the audience is clearly meant to be invested in him due to his focus.

With Game Of Thrones its different, every character is meant to be flawed significantly, especially in the material being adapted for House Of The Dragon.

Everyone in HotD is meant to be the worst, none of the men are fit for leadership they are all vile manipulators doing some of the worst things imaginable and the females are so warped and broken by the disgusting society they live in that if they ever do get positions of power they lash out, go nuts or are so broken that they are terrible leaders re-enforcing the stereotypes the male characters have. That is the point of the story that such a society is broken beyond repair and we are witnessing its collapse, where even those trying to fix it are destroyed by it.

@Scarilian - lol. Can't the women just be terrible people? Why sre their actions excused by the society that they live in?

The men are shaped by this same society yet they don't get a free pass lol.

Wild.

@Toblakai - Because it's a patriarchal society.

Are people not paying attention. Daemon is one of the best characters but has been despicable from the beginning. Every time he walks in the room you wonder what unhinged thing he’s going to do next.

Who's turning against Daemon? A bunch of halfwits on Twitter? Meh.

Still the best character on the show and Matt Smith is crushing it.....just ask his first wife🤣🤣🤣

What is the “News” of this article? 😂. I anticipated there woudl be a link to something to back up the headline.

Anyways…

HBO Executives panicking that in 2022 their most popular character is the wife killing, chocking incest mad man!
globaltravels
globaltravels - 10/25/2022, 6:20 AM
@IronGenesis - that’s pretty par for the course for HBO. A lot of their shows feature pretty horrendous people
IronGenesis
IronGenesis - 10/25/2022, 7:40 AM
@globaltravels - that is very true. But with HOTD rhey took a decided effort to have more strong female characters, more diversity in casting, less violence against woman.

And then…the most popular character from the show turns out to be a White Guy who Murders/Assaults his wives.

Apparently the few viewers that were triggered and offended by his actions haven’t watched any earlier episodes cause what he did in the finale was light compared to what he did throughout the season. 🤷‍♂️
CassianAndor
CassianAndor - 10/25/2022, 12:47 PM
@AnthonyVonGeek - I think it’s because he specifically did it to Rhaenyra who’s kind of the audience stand in. It’s similar to a real life abusive relationship. The type that fall for asshole narcissists like Daemon often justify it with stuff like “But I’m different. He’d never to that to ME”. But no, they do it to everyone.

If Daemon was a real person he would have a billion instagram followers, and they would all be women.
connorblaze
connorblaze - 10/25/2022, 4:18 AM
Lmao this would all be women, who found him to be attractive and sexy because of his bad boy thing when he was beating messengers and brutally torturing and murdering people, then the moment he puts his hands on his missus throat NOW they realize he’s a monster.
FireandBlood

Anybody shocked or put off by his actions in the last episode clearly haven’t been paying attention.

“Over the centuries, House Targaryen has produced both great men and monsters. Prince Daemon was both. In his day there was not a man so admired, so beloved, and so reviled in all Westeros. He was made of light and darkness in equal parts. To some he was a hero, to others the blackest of villains.”
