HOUSE OF THE DRAGON Unlikely To Return Until Summer/Fall 2024; New Update On GAME OF THRONES Spin-Off Plans

HBO's content boss has shared a big update on where things stand with House of the Dragon's planned second season, while he also gets candid about why we aren't seeing more Game of Thrones spin-offs...

House of the Dragon premiered last year to glowing reviews and massive viewership numbers, but the wait for season 2 is shaping up to be a long one.

In a new interview with Variety (via SFFGazette.com), HBO and HBO Max content CEO Casey Bloys reiterated that 2024 "is a good guess" when it comes to the show's return, but refused to get too specific.

He did, however, note that the Game of Thrones spin-off is unlikely to be eligible for the 2024 Emmy season (its eligibility period ends on May 31, 2024), so we'd bet on a Summer/Fall 2024 debut.

There's been plenty of chatter online about various other spin-offs in recent years, of course, including one starring Naomi Watts that was cancelled after the pilot episode was shot. So, why are none of these filling the gap until House of the Dragon returns?

"My philosophy is a good script is number one priority," Bloys says. "I am not doing it based on wanting to have one a year, two a year. I want to do it based on the scripts that we’re excited about."

"Remember, to get ‘House of the Dragon’ following up from ‘Game of Thrones,’ we developed a lot of shows, shot a pilot, developed a bunch of scripts and we got ‘House of the Dragon. To do that again is going to take the same amount of effort. You have to develop a lot of things, try things. You never know what’s going to work. So we’re currently doing that."

"I’m not opposed to any number of shows," he continued. "There’s probably a natural limit to how many fans want, but I’m open to any as long as we feel really good about the scripts and the prospects for a series. It takes a while to get one that hits the mark. I know George [R.R. Martin] feels the same way. You want to do one that everybody’s really proud of and excited about."

A TV series revolving around Jon Snow with a returning Kit Harington is thought to be among the projects likely to happen, but HBO is clearly in no rush and doesn't want to risk tarnishing the brand with a subpar effort.

Elsewhere in the interview, Bloys would confirm the rumoured Six Feet Under revival has been scrapped, and while a True Blood revival was considered, it too is no longer happening. On a brighter note, Bong Joon-ho's small screen take on Parasite is still being developed, albeit slowly.

I’d rather them take their time with season 2 and any other spin offs. We all learned how rushing production without having the writing locked in hurt the final seasons of Game of Thrones.

This show had to be my pleasant surprise of last year. Nobody was expecting much from it and it exceeded expectations big time.

@mountainman - maybe the best show of 2022. They should take all the time they need. Condal clearly is the right man for the job.

@McMurdo - The good news is that Martin has finished this story. That means we shouldn’t have the same issues that the original show did when it passed the books.

Funnily enough, that’s the exact reason that I’m skeptical about these other projects not based on books.

The only other novels Martin has written is the Dunk & Egg series, which is actually a nice and fun story but much more lighthearted than his other stories. I’d be happy to see it adapted.

But all the other stuff would just be fan fiction.

@mountainman - it typically does not bode well when it comes to adaptations that is for sure.

Didn't surprise me really that there'd be a two year gap. Was hoping for the Jon Snow show to be in-between though.

@bkmeijer1 - do we know for sure it won't at least begin pre production? I was hoping for this to be the case in 2023. I'm not sold on the Snow show being worth it considering it's a blank canvas in the Canon but ya never know.

@McMurdo - think the Snow show might already start shooting this year.

Atleast I hope so, because I do look forward to it. Snow was my favorite character in GoT, even in his standing around and ''my queen''ing days in seasons 7 and 8

@bkmeijer1 - oh, easily. Kit was just a monster all the way thru that series. He was never the problem. I just hope they have a real story to tell worth moving the Canon forward. I'd like George involved in some capacity as well.

bkmeijer1 - 2/23/2023, 2:36 PM
@McMurdo - hope so too. If George is involved, then I don't doubt it will even have a proper story to tell (maybe even whatever arc George has planned for him in the last two books)

Still…somebody needs to “leak” the Naomi Watts Bloodmoon Pilot. 😉!

It’s become the norm to wait awhile for big shows like this to return now anyway.

House of the Dragon was doing well until they quickly grew up the lead from one show to the next.

I got really sucked in with Rhaehyra’s character and liked the actress that played her (Millie Alcock) but then they got rid of that charismatic actress.

I would have preferred if they had her grow up between series, or just used the same actress and made her look older.

Once that happened I had a hard time getting back into it.

@TyrantBossMedia - you missed out on some really good performances, by getting hung up on something like that

@Vigor - Who says I missed out?

I watched the entire show genius. I just wasn’t as engaged after she left.

I knew the second I saw your reply that you would have some ridiculous judgemental comment, and you didn’t disappoint,

@TyrantBossMedia - Just think of the first season as a prologue. I know the jumps were tough but they included a lot of content that wasn’t in the book in order to flesh out background. We won’t be jumping like that any more going forward.

I’m just glad we got so much of Paddy Constantine’s amazing performance.

TyrantBossMedia - 2/23/2023, 8:34 AM
@mountainman - Yeah, I figured that was what they were doing. I just wish they would have shown more of the first Rhaenyra.

It was just strange to see her age so much but Matt Smith didn’t age at all,

Hopefully they won’t be jumping as much during a season the future.

@Vigor - You are so predictable. I knew that was going to be your response, just like I knew you couldn’t avoid responding to me because you have some fixation with me.

Note how often I don’t respond to your original posts…..because you don’t matter to me.

Bye bye attention hound.

@TyrantBossMedia - you don't reply to my original posts because my posts aren't negative and I'm not a contrarian. I'm not a troll. So I wouldn't expect too much dissenting

Lol but have a good day Tyrant

@TyrantBossMedia - See Cristan Cole was the weirdest one. It seemed like about 20 years or so from the start of the season to the end and the dude didn’t age a day.

I just hope the younger actors will be good enough to carry it because it’s my understanding they will be some of the main players going forward.
